Every school tells a recruit that though.

We can't stop a recruit from checking out another school. Period.

Yes, obviously, but I don't know why we're dealing with hypotheticals.

The quantifiable reality at this point in time is that we were outrecruited by other coaching staffs.

I love our guys in green, and want them to btho of all those other teams. I can appreciate an underrated team, and maybe this class will lead us to a bowl game one day, but from a business perspective, the recruiting strategy is not sustainable, that is proven historically and academically. Next year we have to get better.

Just to be clear.  A school that is #1 rated in their conference in recruiting should be highly successful that next football season according to this board......

What happened to Marshall who had the C-USA #1?

Very valid point here...

I told a Big 12 alum at my morning coffee who actually watched our HOD Bowl game on ESPN about this discussion along with the pros and cons of it and his exact words....."Jeez, man, your coach took a 1 win team last year to a bowl game this year and yall have some talking about firing him over something as unscientific as recruiting?"   (I told him the natives were restless because of start up schools and schools who hadn't been in NCAA D1 for even a generation plus those schools I'd never heard of the day we beat the Tennessee Vols, circa 1975).

His words got me to thinking back to what kind of W/L success we had after former UNT Coach Todd Dodge signed 15 3 star recruits.  Well, didn't we saw "1" whole winning season from some of that group of 15 with a HOD Bowl  win in the Cotton Bowl before the largest contingent of North Texas fans, students and alums ever gathered?

Great point Plumm but none of the 15 were still around for the HOD bowl, the last of them had their eligibility expire after the '12 season. The driving force behind the HOD was the 2010 class that had ZERO 3-stars and was ranked 117th in the land but included 2 future NFL stars.

What happened to Marshall who had the C-USA #1?  UAB tossed their team, #2  ODU was way down the list at #10......  Teams were all over the place.  While I agree, getting the best players give you a better chance to win....coaching plays a HUGE roll at this level....

If you are dealt a pair of aces at the final table of the WSOP and you go all in and lose it's called a bad beat. Probability vs. certainty.

Bold: only if they are in the mold of a Mark Mangino. ?
