  1. We can talk about poor recruiting and needing a new DC but lets not forget what a great season we had. Conference West Title and another bowl berth. But I think what could help more than anything in recruiting is being able to say we were not only the top G5 in Texas but also better records than any G5 from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. North Texas 9-5 Houston 7-5 SMU 7-6 Louisiana Tech 7-6 Arkansas State 7-5 NMSU 6-6 UTSA 6-5 Louisiana Lafayette 5-7 Tulane 5-7 Louisiana Monroe 4-8 New Mexico 3-9 Texas State 2-10 Tulsa 2-10 RIce 1-11 UTEP 0-12

  5. I really do think there should be a cutback in some of these bowl games (though I personally want the HOD Bowl to be one that survives). Maybe subtract one bowl a year for five or six years and see where that leaves things.

  11. UNT had a very tough road schedule and could had won against Oklahoma, UTA, and Georgetown. These are road games that I think we will be able to pull out in our weaker C-USA schedule. Was not holding my breath to win a single road game before the season but here we are with a winning record before conference play. I think Benford only did that in 2013. In two months we have to grade considering all of the circumstances, especially playing with a mostly new team, I give Mac 2.0 a solid A.

  12. I have to say that this is far and away Bakers best hire in the three major sports at North Texas. He has the most lifetime wins in the three major sports of any hire that Baker has made here, therefore he must be the best hire.

  13. UH pissed off Naaman Forest High in Garland, local as in DFW. Don't really understand the infatuation with Tune. Things slow on My Little Pony Fans website? Don't be scared of change at the big public school in your backyard. It won't change what is coming.

  14. Supporting your school and lying to yourself are not synonymous with one another. This was a decent year in college football standards. This was a "historic" year for UNT football standards. That's where the problem lies. We see ourself as 1 thing whereas everyone else sees us with reality taken into perspective.

  19. I believe this is the book where he talks about resenting having to get involved in petty disputes between some coaches over locker space. Because he claimed that he had just raised 26 million to help build the Super Pit and he had better things to do than settle petty arguments. Well, I love what Hayden Fry did (and tried to do) for this school, but he had nothing to do with the funding for the Super Pit. Hayden Fry used to play very fast and loose with the truth. The concerns (lies) about academics at North Texas go back to when we achieved University status (1961), and filed a bill to change our name to THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. A very ugly chapter in North Texas history. You can read about it in the book The Story of North Texas, by Dr. James Rogers.

  20. C+, which can be upgraded (or downgraded) with more games. 7-6 currently on the year. Won all expected games (Eureka College, Bethune Cookman, Rogers State, Grambling State, Indiana State and McNeese State). I had San Diego as a toss up from what I knew of them. Lost all expected games (Nebraska, Georgia Tech, OU, UTA, Georgetown) Lost to a below .500 UTRGV team at home (which I projected as a Win) Unlike many, I refuse to give McClasland extra credit because Tony Benford was bad and he doesn't appear to be. Instead, my expectation is to see similar results enjoyed at Arkansas State in his lone season there. Still early I really like the addition of Roosevelt Smart and Duffy. Gibson will contribute in the future. Don't like what I have seen in bringing in Arikawe and Michael Miller as Juco guys. Juco's should be impact guys or major contributors. The Russian's situation was somewhat of a gamble and hasn't paid off this year. Not sure why we have a transfer (J. Simmons) using up a valuable scholarship this year to play next year. (Looked like a modest contributor while at ArkSt) Inherited a nice PG in Woolridge, Lawson and a nice prospect in Zach Simmons. Lawson played better last year but Shane Temara is playing much better. Maybe its just the adjustment to a new system at this point. I think we missed a golden opportunity to add to the mix with 7 scholarships for this team and not getting production out of 4 of them (for various reasons). Coaching is better but recruiting is equally important. I'm sure he will end up being a good hire. Just depends on what we look like 3-5 years down the road. I was a student during 3 consecutive 20+ seasons under Bill Blakely; with the top talent the state had to offer and having the best program in Texas. Attendance was at an all-time high and the Pit was electric. It's on my bucket list to see those times again. Hopefully this coach can help move the needle.

  23. Credit does go to Littrell and bringing in any QB capable to play his system should be credited to Littrell. However, he is or very well should be held responsible and entirely responsible for both sides of the ball. He is the HC after all.

  26. This is a boring game, and it is so quiet you could here if a waterboy farted. Personally, I'm glad their attendance blows. Serves them right for muscling C-USA out of the bowl, and not inviting North Texas. Even with this cold weather, North Texas vs. West Virginia still would have had a respectable crowd.

  31. Plane crash was in 1970 on the way to play Utah State. They didn't drop football till 1986 when the Missouri Valley Conference dropped football. I was just looking it up and at the time the MVC dropped football in 1985 they had a mix of two 1A programs - Wichita State and Tulsa and five 1AA programs. The only one of the seven programs that played football in CUSA was Tulsa. Tulsa wasn't a charter member. So, the chances that NT staying in the MoValley and thus becoming a part of the founding of CUSA weren't very good. Louisville went Independent in 75. Cincy in 69. Memphis in 73. Those three joined independents Southern Miss and Tulane to form CUSA football in 95 with Houston planning to join but playing out the last year of SWC football in 95. While it didn't work out for NT, going indy in the late 60 /early 70s seems to have been the route for most of the football playing founders of CUSA. The others all stayed football independents and managed to avoid the 1AA drop down by various means.

  32. I don't disagree with some of your points, however, we lost to a Troy that went into Baton Rouge and beat LSU. We lost to SMU for sure. SMU lost to La Tech who we beat. These days it's kinda splitting hairs at the G5 level to argue about who's the king of the little pond. Houston will typically out recruit SMU and SMU will typically out recruit North Texas. However, both schools find gems who end up being awesome and going to the league. All the aforementioned schools are looking better these days which I like for Texas football. (All of the state, not as in UT.) Maybe we beat SMU in Denton next year, maybe not. I'll have my money on us with SMU losing that stud receiver and new coach and we are returning a ton of players. Either way it will be a good game and shit tons of beer.

  33. Bump. The atrocious play calling vs TROY was far and away inferior to our OL play. They did nothing offensively in the way of play calling to limit an aggressive front 7. Our OC kept calling the same or close to the same passing tree plays and their front 7 just kept their ears pinned back. It was downright pitiful how inept and blatantly incompetent the offensive staff was in that game. You got a problem with the beating Fine took, take it up with that side of the ball staff.

  41. I see recruiting as going in the right direction. I think we need to get rid a Scott Conley. I am sure he is a nice guy, but damn the guy graduated college in the 70s. Nothing wrong with when you graduated, but that tells me at his age he probably has very little understanding of kids today to be in charge of High School relations. Hell I am almost 20 years younger than him and I don't have much understanding of kids in high school today.

  42. "Although the points were not important at that time, the shot did bring the 8,800 Coliseum fans to their feet and the noise they made must have made the ghosts of the neighboring “Old Pit” raise up and take notice." When was the last time we had HALF a crowd of 8,800 in the Super Pit??? That place would really ROCK if there were 8,800 people in it, even if not all of them were cheering for the Mean Green.

  43. Mean Green Ruffs Buffs in 88-69 Win By Art Chapman (Sports Editor) With the aid of the most emotional display of basketball spirit perhaps ever witnessed at North Texas, the Mean Green strapped a 19-point loss on the West Texas State Buffaloes Monday night. A near capacity crowd watched the Eagles as they ran their season record to 22-4, the best record ever in the history of the university. Senior guard Carl Jones paced the fast moving Eagles with 22 points. Junior guard Walter (Weasel) Johnson was next with 19. It was Johnson who almost single-handedly worked the Eagles’ impressive stall against West Texas in the closing minutes of the game. He wheeled and dealed in and out of the Buffs defense, and when he successfully drew them out, he would make one of his patented behind-the-back passes, setting up easy buckets. But it was sophomore forward Fred Mitchell who stole the show when with 10 seconds remaining on the Coliseum scoreboard he intercepted a wayward West Texas pass. He quickly threw the ball to sophomore forward Ken Williams, who crammed it into the basket. Although the points were not important at that time, the shot did bring the 8,800 Coliseum fans to their feet and the noise they made must have made the ghosts of the neighboring “Old Pit” raise up and take notice. The 19-point licking was the worst handed to the Buffaloes this season and it may have decided once and for all the “Battle of Texas.” Senior forward Terry Bailey played an exceptionally physical game on the inside, hitting for 17 points and dragging down 11 rebounds, a team high. Bailey’s point total brought his season record to 501, placing him ninth in the NT record book. His career-scoring total now rests at 907 for an 11th place slot. He also has 201 field goals in a single season for sixth place. “It was a rough game”, Coach Blakeley said. “The officials weren’t calling it very close but I do think they called a good game.” Senior guard Earl King did not get into the game but Blakeley had praise for him also. “King didn’t play tonight but he did a fantastic job all season, on and off the court,” he said. Blakeley said the crowd was extremely helpful, citing the missed free throws of West Texas as a result of the cheering crowd. “It would be great if we could fill it up (Coliseum) all the time.” He said. In the past the first-year coach had said that for each thousand fans, the team gained a one-point advantage. Monday night they gave him two points per thousand. As a result of the Eagle victory, North Texas now stands a good chance for an NCAA playoff bid. Asked where he wanted to go. Blakeley said, “We’ll go anywhere, even Snook, TX; if that’s where we have to.” North Texas must await a decision from the NCAA, which will be forthcoming Thursday.

  44. Scheduling Creates Hassle for Blakeley By Neil Horn (Daily Reporter) “Unbelievable.” That was head basketball Coach Bill Blakeley’s description of the problems he has faced in trying to schedule opponents for next year, following the most successful basketball season in NT history. “I’m not implying that teams are afraid to play us,” Blakeley said Tuesday. “But something’s wrong.” Blakeley has found that verbal agreements made with teams earlier have not been honored when the time to draw up written contracts rolls around. Among the teams that Blakeley had tentatively scheduled for next year, but which backed out, are Alabama, Oklahoma, Long Beach State and Pan American. Blakeley said he is not “popping off” to embarrass teams that refuse to play North Texas. “I just want to play,” he explained. “I went to Philadelphia (site of the NCAA basketball finals) just to try and schedule games,” Blakeley said. “I must have corned 45 people in the hotel lobby begging for games. I even got down on my knees for one coach begging for a game.” He said the only results from his search for games with topnotch competition have been a few tentative verbal agreements. “YOU’VE GOT to experience what I’ve experienced to know what’s happening,” he said. Among the teams that North Texas is scheduled to play next year are SMU, Baylor, TCU, Kansas State, Oral Roberts, Centenary, Tulsa, West Texas State, San Diego State, UT-Arlington, Northwestern Louisiana, Fresno State, Lamar, Arkansas State, Samford, Houston Baptist, Stetson and Texas Wesleyan College.
