  1. I remember a coach that was not good at his job. I remember a coach that was disconnected from his players. I remember a coach that was slow to realize he was in over his head. What I don't remember is a bad person deserving to have his name drug through the mud every chance we get. Dodge did not speak poorly of the program when he was fired. There was no black jersey game. No cussing of the fans. Let it go

  2. Exactly... Todd Dodge was just Vic Trilli as a football coach--a great family man, a man who helped to get huge facilites improved, and was good in front of a microphone or camera (unlike his predecessor). We NEVER would have goitten Fouts replaced if Todd Dodge didnt keep that issue in front of the BOR during any press interviews he did, maintaining that he was promised that a new stadium was in the works even though it ended up taking the stealthiest campaign the university could have put on to get it approved. Apogee never gets built if Dodge doesn't force the issue to keep it on the front burner, which forced the university to eventually have to do something. UNTFlyer took care of most of the campaign, but Todd Dodge gave it the full attention it deserved. But he was an incredible under-achiever as a football coach, since he had no one on staff for basically two years that had little-to-no college experience. It was right for him to get fired, as it actually happened later than it really should have, but the university wouldn't buy out two years of his contract. He just wasn't the right fit here, just like Dickey wasn't, Simon wasn't, and Parker wasn't. Corky Nelson might have been if he had an administration to even attempt to care about sports. What makes me feel better is to know that we currently do have a coach that is the right fit--I just wonder how much longer he will stay here if he gets an offer from an AQ team. I still think he will get a call from Kansas at the end of this year, assuming Weis has another terrible year. He knows that league, that area of the country, and would be able to get another rebuilding gig, which he seems to specialize in. We'll see, but that is my biggest concern with Coach Mac at this point in time...because he really is the best fit for this place.

  5. Saw this tweeted by Eric Capper but haven't seen it posted here. Enjoy... No one does bizarre like Conference USA. From the top of the list to the bottom, the stories of how coaches arrived at their jobs are strange at best. Larry Coker won a national title at Miami, and couldn’t get hired anywhere until UTSA came calling. Skip Holtz had success everywhere he coached, then bottomed out at USF and caught on with LaTech. Then, of course, there is Ron Turner — merely a longtime respected NFL assistant who decided to take a flier on the FIU job. Crazy, all of it. And that’s just the beginning. http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2014-04-20/conference-usa-coach-rankings-larry-coker-skip-holtz-doc-holliday-david-bailiff?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter Coach Mac is such an asset to this program. We're seeing the benefits on the field, in the classroom, in the media, and on the staff (with NT becoming an attractive place for assistants to develop and further their careers).

  7. Wow, thought we were much further along than this. We may need to have therapy sessions twice a week. Also watch the season highlights before you come next time. We won 9 games last season and won a bowl game! Take the todge box out of your closet and burn his old love notes! Move on, we have a real coach now

  10. In case you've missed it, the 2013 squad was not just Champion of the HOD Bowl but it was recently announced that during the fall semester, they were CUSA Academic Champs! DENTON -- The North Texas football team had the highest grade point average of all Conference USA schools during the 2013 fall semester. The cumulative GPA for the Mean Green last fall was 2.70, which was higher than all 12 of the other football playing schools in the conference and well above the 2.53 league average. http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/042514aaa.html The success Mac has had turning around this, most critical, element of the program continues to impress me. If there were an opportunity for the students and coaching staff to let up in this area, it would've been last fall when on-field success could seemingly justify a lessened focus academically. I'm sure this has and will continue to play well on the recruiting trail.

  19. In the midst of the bowl run, we had a student vote that failed. In the midst of one of the worst runs in collegiate football history, we had a vote that passed. Next question.

  20. "“I am going to wait until mid season to decide,” Garbutt said. “I have talked to my family and they want to see if something comes up." Translation: My recruitment is a big point of pride to my folks. It just sounds cooler to say "my son is going to Oklahoma".

  21. Let's not forget that he'd do all of those things while recruiting to a stadium that required generators to host a game, had half the paltry budgets that we do now and being disparaged for taking us to four straight conference titles without earning the "style points" that people wanted to see. I saw in this thread someone put forth that Apogee wouldn't have been possible without Dodge mentioning it in press conferences. I wonder, which carried more weight with student voters and the BOR...sound bytes by a man with a 13% winning percentage or four bowl trips to prove that the football program was not an utter waste of time?

  23. Dickey. What's the worst that could happen? He might run the ball predictably on first downs, even against a stacked box and count on his defense to win games. All the while promising in the Spring and Fall to "open up" the offense. Nah, we'd NEVER tolerate that around here.

  30. Yeah, I knew about the tournament but I guess I didn't know that much about it. I didn't know that most players were lightly recruited, especially since Brooks was there, but as you said it wouldn't make much sense for guys with plenty of offers to be there. I saw there were a couple 7 footers. Just out of curiosity, did they stand out as players? Or we're they uncommitted for a reason?

  42. I'm just not surprised by anything that happens anymore. Penn state happened. A university system so corrupt that they systematically closed ranks to protect their football program because it was the catalyst of their billion dollar endowment. What did the NCAA do? Slapped them on the wrist(albeit hard), but that program should have been kicked out of membership if there was any honor left in this system. There is not. The last 2 major sports championships (BCS championship and NCAA bball) were played between teams that started a player currently under investigation for murder (UK), a Heisman winner still under investigation for rape (FSU), and a team that graduated less than 25% of its players for 4 years up until last year(UCONN). It is getting damned hard to continue to support this garbage if the universities are not going to hold themselves to a higher ethical standard than they currently are. This crap happening now is just more of the same. Protect the cash cow and endowment money printing machine (big time sports) at all costs.
