  1. "And the guy that made the play was a guy that I helped recruit to Florida, Jonathan Dawling from Bradenton southeast and he left Florida and transferred to WKU and it was a sensational play he made for the touchdown today." Hey McCarney.......................we don't care a flying flip who you helped recruit to Florida. Tell us what you did for UNT today!!!!

  2. The next few months leading up to signing day, recruiting, off season conditioning, etc., then spring football it self will give us a good indicator of next season. Regarding recruiting...I cannot say I am for or against it...I was a juco many moons ago. Juco's have a spot on every roster. Repeat spot / spots. To fix an immediate need would be a reason to go juco...not to "rebuild" your football team. Example...Look at Charlie Weiss at Kansas. He has over 20 transfers / juco's on his current roster. That is not healthy for long term stability on the field or in the locker room. Football is a team sport and "team" is not implemented with 20+ players being around for 2 years. And did that give him an immediate "fix"? Mac is the head coach for a reason...he has skins on the wall. And has been stated, before and argued....2 years does not rebuild a program. I like everyone else on here wishes we were bowling...but we are not. It is what it is. Until I get a UNT coaching hat and whistle, I am supporting what is done in the offices, thinking they know what is best for what is put on the football field. I would not make decisions in Coach Macs office any more than I would expect him to make a good decision in my office. Remember that a football team has many different pieces to the puzzle...I just dont think Coach Mac has all the right pieces yet...I think he will find them...but that is why he has the coaches hat and whistle...not me.

  3. This. Some of the shots taken at DT on this board strike me as personal. I'm disappointed in his season, but I appreciate his willingness to sacrifice for the Mean Green. He's one of ours, and always will be. And I'm sure I'm not half as disappointed in his season as he is.

  4. Nice touch from #7. Appreciate his acknowledgement of the fans support through a tough season. If, as a fan, you think it was a tough go.....think how it has been for these guys who have been the ones who actually went through it each and every day. I appreciate this note from Derek....

  5. Some of you are doing a very poor job of hiding your hate for Coach Mac (as well as the AD). Everyone has the right to express their opinions, but some of the stuff you guys are pouncing on make you guys look bad.

  8. I'm considering organizing a watching party on New Year's Eve to watch the broadcast of the men's team take on MTSU. I'd be doing it somewhere in the Plano, Allen, McKinney area. I'm just trying to gauge interest. Good idea or not?

  9. Here are a couple of questions for Mac: 1) Have you ever coached in the Rose Bowl? or 2) Do you rent or own your home?

  10. Heck, just go down the forum topics: Why was last year's record better? Will Derek really address the fans? What will happen if UTSA beats us next year? What was your win/loss prediction for the year? How are you really doing at recruiting? What was meant when you brought up your involvement in recruiting that WKU kid to Florida? Will spring football answer a lot of questions? Are we stepping into the Brock Berglund era? Are interlocked NTs on helmets sweet to you? How much do we have to do heading into CUSA? How are you doing vs advertised? Was the loss Saturday your fault? Did you drink beer or Grey Goose following the loss? I kid, of course.

  11. Lol, no. Even tho i'm sure he feels the same way, i would never want Rick to stop wearing his fire hat to games. It's a staple to see his hat at every game

  12. Can't blame DT. He was given the task of being QB and he did it. While we wish we saw better results it is what it is and at the end of the day he's a young man and he tried his best.

  13. I'm not going to fall over dead (not yet anyway) nor am I going to think you went to the dark side (that'll never happen), but this is a bit surprising that you put down your pom poms this early in the process and started talking like a businessman.....again. My career was not in the private sector (state of Texas agency), but one aspect of my work experience was the same as in the private sector....results. In my work experience you list your accomplishments (skins on the wall) as part of the process (the other part is the actual interview) to get the job you want. After that, when you meet for your monthly conference with your supervisor it's......what have you done since you've been hired? What's you plan to manage all the challenges that we talked about in our last conference? And this last statement brings me back to something that I talk about all the time. The challenge at North Texas is NOT the same challenge that you had at Florida, or Iowa St., or South Florida etc etc. The vast majority of coaches out there are not prepared to deal with the type of culture we have here at North Texas. It isn't fair, but you have to address that issue as well as the win/loss issue. Because when you become the Head coach at North Texas you are the person in charge of the football program....in all aspects. As much as he was hammered for it when he said it, I had to agree with DD when he made his "this is one of the toughest situations in college football" statement. But my reaction to it was different than other people, who got mad at him. I said "well duh! you're just now figuring that out?" Now that it's finally hit you...what are you going to do about it? And the answer to that was NOTHING because to change our "situation", you not only have to be a good coach, you must also have great people skills and public speaking skills. And as we all know by now.....he had neither. You also have to be keenly aware of this University's long time public image and be prepared to go above and beyond and/or get real creative, when you are out there trying to sell this "situation" to college recruits. In other words you have to have a plan and it needs to be reviewed/assessed more often than just about any other D-1 coach's plan. One of the big positives with Coach Mac IS his experiences. It give him a lot more credibility with the alumni/fans, the student body, and all those potential recruits out there that could come here and help change our football fortunes. BUT, every time Coach Mac's team losses to a relatively unknown team (the WKU's and MTSU's of the world) he losses a bit of his credibility. Talking about your "skins on the wall" helps mitigate that to a certain extent. But ultimately, like all coaches out there, he is being judged by what everyone in the business world is judged by.......results. So Mark, you haven't joined the dark side. You've just reverted to your business background experience.....which is.results.

  14. Complete Bulsh, Kram. ULM gets it done. Kent St. Gets it done. So sick of F'n excuses. If you can't recruit CUSA talent to UNT, you shouldn't be a coach in ANY of our athletic programs. The inferiority complex is complete crap and nothing but an excuse.

  15. A few things to point out, Dodge won 6 games verses Div 1 teams not in their transitional 1-A season, and Mac has won 7. Of course it took Dodge 4 years to do it. Then Canales won two more without him. Regardless, Mac has not dwarfed Dodge's win totals. Give him two more years and he probably will though. And it didn't take Mac 4 years to win at Iowa State, it took him 6. 1 season in the Big 8 and the first 5 seasons in the BIg 12. And to set the record straight, I'm not calling for Mac to be fired. I'm simply skeptical of the future from what I've seen so far. As fans we are given the right to be skeptical as we go to work each day mocked and made fun of for being the fools still carrying around the Mean Green water after an 8th straight losing season. 16. I think the problem is you can't stand someone not agreeing with you. Sorry, but I will be blunt. Shaft is right about the situation Mac took on last year and you are too arrogant to admit he is right. Mac is a coach and you are not. He has sat on the toilet and thought about more football than you could ever imagine.
    3 points
  17. I honestly never thought shaft would be the voice of reason, but he is now. I hate losing as much as the next person, but if some of you would step back and honestly and objectively look at what Mac inherited, take the emotion out of it, you might have reason for hope.

  27. If Mac stays consistant, no. He said he is building this program on Texas high school kids. I would anticipate sprinkling 2 or 3 in per year. That includes xfers. I think he is willing to take his lumps now in favor if red shirting and allowing kids to develop. The kids we have to recruit NEED that year of physical development in addition to learning the system in place. This is his vision, and just because we are ALL disappointed in the record this year, he isn't going to scrap his plan. He wants to get us back to 85 schollies for contributors. Without quality depth, there won't be wins late in the year.

  30. You're an ass clown. I am so tired of hearing how UNT fans set the bar low. People like you want to fire a coach after 2 years just so you can peacock around like you set the bar higher than everyone else. BS. Some people just have an ounce of intelligence, which is 1 more ounce than you. If you are firing your coach every year, or even 2, then the revolving door of coaches drives this thing worse. What recruit is going to come to a school where that is happening? We saw it when Dodge was a lame duck, few decent recruits are coming to a school with a lame duck coach. I don't set the bar low, I set it high. I have had season tickets to football and basketball for I don't know how long. I support them because I expect them to build winning programs and to do that you have to have support. But I also know you have to have more intelligence than 90% of the posters on this board. What retard would fire a coach in his first 2 years when he has, what - quadrupled - the wins per season from the previous 6 or 8 years???? And lets not kid ourselves, this thing started going downhill during the Dickey time, so its a long ways to get back to more consistent winning seasons. Should we expect more wins than 5 or 4 a season, absolutely. Should we expect it immediately after about 8 years of bad, bad losing? Only if you have no idea what is going on. If we are still under .500 and no clear road to get past that after 4 years, then you make a change and move on.

  31. If its already too hard to recruit good kids to UNT... Just wait until Appoge is a couple years older and we've got a few 3 or 4 win CUSA seasons under our belt. Our next coach will have an even awesomer excuse to suck!!

  32. ULM went 6-6 (5-3) under Charlie Weatherbie in 2009. Fired him. Todd Berry came in and improved the win total by -1. Went 5-7 (4-4) then 4-8 (3-5) in 2010 and 2011 respectively. He went 7-4 (5-2) this season and is getting all kinds of praise. We had the worst coach in UNT history. Fired him. Danny Mac came in and went 5-7 (4-4) his first year and 4-8 (3-5). I think we can all just hold off on declaring the Danny Mac hire to be a lost cause.

  33. Ok...this is going to be a bit out of character for me, so don't fall over dead and think that I have gone over to the dark side here....but, I too am tiring of all this "skins on the wall stuff"...and the what we (me and my coaching staff) have done at other schools. That was OK in year one, but it is time to move along. Let's talk about UNT and what one has done here and what one is DOING here and what one will do here. I get it...it is a good bit of Coach speak, but let us all move along now. We are officially in year three of the Mac era...I believe in Mac and Company, but I am tiring of hearing about what went on elsewhere. I care about what goes on at UNT and with the Mean Green. I believe Coach Mac and Company can indeed get it done here, so let's talk about that....go sign kids for UNT, go Coach 'em up and let's go out and win in year three. My bride and I will be there in support all the way and so will the fans of the Mean Green Nation. Year three starts NOW!

  34. UNT90...no offense taken..again, I am just a fan / dad that is trying to keep positive through a tough part of the year coming up during recruiting, off season and spring. I do agree, spring is a time to make the fan base feel good....but I think it also is a time to see what is to come. I just got off the phone with a close friend of mine who's son plays at Purdue...man...I do not wish that situation on anyone. Before anyone continues the "get rid of Mac" song, they need to talk to these boys like this kid at Purdue.

  38. I can't believe that line of thinking wasn't used in the Rodney King beating trial. "Your honor, these allegations are ridiculous. This man says my clients beat him. He doesn't know a thing about police brutality. My clients are police officers...and he is not!!!" The "he does it professionally so you couldn't possibly recognize his mistakes" line of reasoning is flawed, fatally so. Have you ever been President of the U.S.? Are you then required to be silent about their policies? Have you, or Shaft, ever been a chef? You apparently have no right to critique food. I'm certain you've never directed a motion picture. You'd give every movie you see two thumbs up then obviously...professionals spent serious time on the toilet thinking of how to shoot those scenes.

  42. Still no response from the haters I can only assume Htown is being ironic because he adds to the Mac performance by pointing out the schools limits an use of u degrades fueling the bare cupboard claims. Emmitt makes a false comparison about kid touchers and serial killers. But still no response to the fact that Mac has more wins. If you are hating on the coach right now you are either a bad fan, irrational or a bad judge the shape this program was in after 2010.

  43. I like RV but we have to judge him on the critical and high visibility hires of football and men's basketball. He goes from Dodge to Coach Mac which in his first two years have been less than average. In basketball he had a stacked team to work with and brought on Benford and while the jury is still out on him it is alarming to see the trends and level of play the first half dozen games of the season. And on the side let's also not forget the hiring of Shanice Stephens. Overall RV has done great things here but if the right hires aren't made for the football team and men's basketball then his job status shouldn't be untouchable here IMO.

  44. How about keeping his job as an incentive? Another year like this one or worse and he'll be gone. Four straight .400 (or less) coaches over the past 19 years makes patience wear thin. Nepotism must overproduce or it's a failure in the eyes of the public.

  49. Dodge was stagnation, he was a recession. Now we have to pay the price with 3-4 years of coach'em up to get back to having a shot at conference games. It sucks, but it's true. The good thing is we are moving into a weaker CUSA with more bowl options. So while Tulsa might own the West for the first few seasons there is no reason to believe we can't play the number two role and still go bowling. UTSA, UTEP, Tulane, Rice. Let's not act like those games are impossible.
