  1. I sure hope that Benford accepts the Syracuse and Kentucky home games that JJ left on his desk every year.

  2. It seems like any time any school and Texas does anything someone starts a lame "are they passing us by thread." Can we all agree getting our sloppy seconds in an Olympic sports conference is not passing anyone by. The SBC didn't want the Mavericks the first go around. But to be fair UTA has one thing going for it. Their new BB arena let's them host events like this:

  5. If you can add FSU and Clemson, you add FSU and Clemson. It would absolutely increase the media deal. And that's all this whole thing is about. Someday we may look back on the years that we let TV ruin college football. Until then, it's a cash grabbing free-for-all.

  11. the UT System does not make moves based on what happens at other universities like TxState.....Academics is not a competition similar to athletics at all and if UT was so concerned about TxState then they would have prevented them from adding enough Doctoral programs to become an emerging research university and they would have started the Edwards Aquifer research center and the like TxState draws the largest (by far) % of their students from the Austin metro area so Westlake students might not be TxState, but a large number of other Austin area students are UTSA had 352 students in the 2011 cohort from Travis County while TxState had 437 (and growing every year for the last few years while UTSA is down from 2007 and 2008) so while UTSA might be the new hot place for Westlake grads (for what reason I would not know other than the transfer program) it looks as though TxState is still more popular with the Travis County freshman class I would imagine the % of college bound students that were from a school like Westlake that could not get into Texas or TAMU and could not afford privvate school and that did not want to consider Tech or TxState is extremely small compared to the total number of college bound seniors from a school like Westlake and that is ignoring students going to OU, OkState, Arkansas and other state schools that heavily recruit students from Texas Westlake was not one of the top 10 feeder schools for UTSA as well in any recent year

  12. If one does not "search out" their on-line newspaper edition, how do younger people find out what the hell is going on locally, nationally, and worldwide? Not everyone watches their local news, CNN, Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc., every day. I'm like foutsrouts and receive a local paper every day, searching for some topic that interests me. BTW, do newspaper columnists and writers use spell check?

  13. I expect the DMN to go to three times a week by the end of 2013.

  14. Back when the DMN was 25 cents a day it was a terrific deal! Now I'm like everyone else and read everything online. Newspapers will eventually be gone and it will be a sad day. No longer will there be cheap paper to wrap someone's desk while they are on vacation.

  15. Yup, the Times Picayune's longtime publisher is retiring and the company is moving with more digital approach. Sounds like they are ahead of the curve.

  16. I'm one of the few people I know under or around the age of 50 who still gets a paper thrown on his porch every morning. I used to read both local papers cover to cover starting when I was in early grade school, but now I pretty much only study the sports page and scan everything else for something interesting. Kinda sad, but the demise of the daily paper began happening well before the masses became addicted to the internet. I guess the Times Herald's closure back in '91 was the beginning of the end.

  18. The problem is going to be recruiting. If you are a "have not" you will not be able to recruit against the top tier league even more so than now. The second tier teams will have nothing to sell for those looking to compete. You will not even be able to sell competing for a bowl game against the potential of a title. This would widen the gap. You can't just infuse the team with more money like you can in soccer over seas. Since you can't pay players, you would only get the runoff from the top tier teams. That's how the soccer teams move up, they bite the bullet, fork over cash to get players, and start winning. That model will not work here unless they start making college football a pro sport. I just don't see how this makes things any better than they are now, probably worse.

  19. At least the "have not's" have a chance this way...not so in college football. Win enough, you move up...no one can keep you out of the "big boy" group if you win and it's "win" against your competition...not those "big boys" if you are not already in the Premier League. Look at Manchester City...doesn't seem like always the same five to me at this point now does it? Remember Flyer...you have just recently come to the "beautiful game". ha! Just pullin' you leg a bit.

  21. How can the WAC do that? To add move ups by 2015 which is when the WACs current waiver expires, said move ups must announce their new membership and intent to move up by June 1. After that, the WAC will no longer be able to sponsor FCS move ups. Also, the move ups must play four home games each year against FBS opponents. How can NMSU and Idaho do that? This year, UTSA is getting a waiver to allow them just three FBS home games, but they still must have four next year. Do those WACy folks think the NCAA will waive HALF of the required games for SIX teams for Two years? If that's the case, them just allow anyone to move up at any time. I can't imagine there being enough votes for that, especially when the sentiment is to stop FCS move ups for ten more years.

  26. Wow! Where do they go now? NMSU during our bowl run had a pretty decen little team. That game in Denton where we clinched our 2nd conference championship still ranks as my all-time favorite game. Seriously...where do they go?

  31. Why are we going to Miss State? Did we not just do that? I wish they'd come here. If LSU can, I see no reason why Miss State can't...they are no Duke or even a Gonzaga...just my two cents.

  34. I bet alot of the top tier teams wouldn't mind. It would be a great test for their teams. But I'm afraid you're right. Unless we schedule Kansas(again)/Kentucky/Duke/et al., we may not get a shot at a beatable team other than the ones we already have on the schedule like MS St.
    1 point
  35. My guess, getting games with anybody that have not already been scheduled are going to be difficult. Most teams are not going to want any part of Mitchell and Company.

  36. So, in your opinion, how long will "Troy" be building with JUCO's? And, will they have lasting success going this route in your opinion? I don't think I can point to any team with a quality long-term record over the last 20 years or so who built anything long lasting with JUCO's as a majority of their recruits. Could be wrong, of course. Just want to have your thoughts since you seem to be more positive on loading up with JUCO's than I am.

  37. I think, pending some unforeseen injury to Thompson, that the Mean green are well set at QB going into the 2012 season. Thompson can be the leader UNT needs on the field and has shown marked improvement, in my opinion, in his decision making and execution. Of all the positions in question for the season, I think this one is the least of UNT's worries. Depth behind Thompson looks solid with Osborn and McNulty and Dodson. And, as jimbob just pointed out above, Thompson's most creative game came with Dunbar sidelined. Coul;d that bode well for Chico's offensive planning and play calling for 2012? I think it's a real possibility, and I think Thompson can execute that plan quite well. I am more than happy with the QB position going into 2012. Now, defensive backs...that's another story altogether.

  38. Lots of schools live on jucos, although it is getting less common. With the new eligibility rules on the horizon, they will be even less a factor in both football and basketball. Even the premier teams cherry pick the jucos, but like high school recruiting; Belt schools are not getting the cream. Troy maybe an exception with their over signing and academic risk taking. Off topic, but some of the Troy fans are the most vocal against NT and FIU moving on. What they fail to fully realize is that Troy is likely never going anywhere and it is not their location, it is their academic reputation. It will be interesting to see how far Troy can go as rules tighten on transfers and over signing. Last years, performance might not be just a bad year for them.

  39. If you really watched the games last year you would have noticed that the game Lance sat out had the most creative and prolific offense of the year. Thompson was hot most of the game and receivers stepped up. The running game was the secondary choice and it flourished because the passing game was so effective. I liked Lance, but basing our entire offense on him was only good for him. Chico knows what to do with Thompson.

  41. I really don't understand why an AD would go out of his way to single us out. You're supposed to represent your university with class if you're the AD, this is borderline disrespectful. I hope we destroy ULL in everything this year.

  42. I respectfully disagree. They have a long way to go before they see a .500 season in CUSA. Coker coached at Miami. Miami. In it's prime. He was handed the premier program in the country and managed to muck it up. Yes, he won a national title. His 1st year. With someone elses players. Each year the record got worse and the players more out of control, or should I say more publicly out of control, that is. In year 6, when he should have MIAMI. Yes, THAT MIAMI running strong, they finish 6-6 as Coker loses control of his players on several occasions. Then he lost out to Baliff for the Rice coaching job. Let me repeat that. He couldn't land the Rice coaching job. After winning a national championship. He was then unable to get a coaching gig for 2 years. A national championship winning coach. He then took a head coaching gig at a start up program with no facilities that would play FCS football. Why? Sugarcoat it all he wants, there were no other options. Yes, it was/is a good hire for a UTSA type program. Forgive me if I think he will struggle mightily at UTSA.

  43. Well, with just about as many teams moved as possible, DeLoss has now authorized Chip to wind up the Texas 12 propagandizing machine again. Gee, Chip, where else would the Notre Damers go? Let's see, it's the Big Ten or Texas 12. This was real difficult to figure out. Granted, Notre Dame would have to give up their monopoly of self and step down to join the monopoly of Texas and Big 8 rival-traitors Oklahoma. The Big Ten won't allow that, so... ...wowee, Chip, what a scoop. I think the Hardy Boys were on this one ages ago. If not, Nancy Drew certainly had it. Next, puff of smoke from Chip - BYU: Pac-14...16...18 or Texas 12.

  45. Odoh didn't exactly just step off the boat and enter the USA. Lets see Odoh has now played for two different Jucos, signed and been released from USM and NT, so he should have a fair understanding no matter what his language skills are of what is going on. It really doesn't bother me that Odoh wanted to change schools after the coaching change. However, as I stated above; it does bother me that he didn't have the courtesy or fortitude to meet directly with the new coach of the University he signed a contract with. I am sure he is being "guided" by someone, whether it is his juco coach, potential agent or a member of NT's old coaching staff; but that doesn't clear him of the responsibility of his actions. It is obvious that Odoh had nothing to lose and potentialy something to gain by meeting with Benford. Odds are he is being guided by someone who has a lot more than Odoh's best interest as a motive.

  46. 1. SMU competes withl UNT in the same media market. 2. SMU competes with UNT in recruiting. 3. SMU competes with UNT in most sports and will compete in football in 2014 and 2015 4. SMU will no longer be able to schedule OOC games with regional Big 12 teams, creating an opportunity for UNT If you are not obsessed with SMU ..You should be.

  49. The NMSU game was my favorite game at Fouts, too. And the south Fouts Field goal-post tearing down by a football field full of students and fans I still have a photo of that one framed. I think it was Dickey's best moment as UNT HFC even over the bowl win against (now Big East member) Cincinatti. GMG!
