  1. How awesome is it to be a freshman class of 2015 at the University of North Texas right now? I remember when I started back in 06, we had an enormous amount of problems athletically, and educationally and didnt know where the future lied for UNT. Now these freshman come in with a new stadium, renewed commitment to athletics (baseball program by the time they're seniors?) winning basketball program, new business and life science facilities, a fresh $22 million donation, plus $8 million more, and I'm sure more on the way, and new fraternity house construction (more people living on campus please) Not only this, they get free seats in the stadium. Oh, and Fry Street construction should be complete by their sophomore years. I'm jealous of them. What a great time to be a freshman. Now, if only the City of Denton could do its part.

  5. It's time for all of us not only to learn the words to our Alma Mater and Fight Song but to encourage others to learn them as well. It should be mandatory that everyone be in their seats before our team comes on the field. When the band starts the fight song and 20,000 + people are singing the words together in the stadium it will sends chills down the opponents backs. That would be the only time that everyone needed to sing the fight song together. You can if you want and it will always sound great in that stadium no matter how many are singing but the song is played to many times during the game, and thats ok! It would be awesome!!!!! Maybe only a few sing for the first time but much like the TCU chant some guy started during that game, this thing would mushroom fast. The other one is the Alma Mater. We need to play it and people need to learn the words and sing it. It is one if not the most beautiful Alma Maters in all of college football. Play 15 minutes before the game or better yet start it immediately after the game. Win Or Lose, joy or tears. It wont take long for more to join it. When the other team walks off the field to their locker room they will be moved whether they won or lost. As always..........imop

  8. Guys that would be me and my girlfriend in the picture. As you can see, they are more worried about the big 12 schools. That was my only complaint about the photoshoot. I had a lot of fun, and hats off to Texas Monthly.

  9. Hmm. I say stay in Denton. We keep saying the stadium would be beneficial to the city, so let's encourage visitors to stay here.

  10. They will have a drop off area (prob at the old hotel parking lot) where you can drop your tailgating stuu, park your cr, and walk back and set up. This really isn't any different than t any other University, folks. You wanted a better stadium and real college game day experience? Well, this is part of the package.

  11. Oh, for sure! If you want the best, you gotta go with Frenchy's. Wait, I thought we were talking about food in this thread. Are Cougar fans moving here? Yes, we know... Apogee stadium is very nice, but you can stay in Houston.

  12. If Leach and DMac coach up against each other in the same conference again, I wouldn't mind nabbing a second coming of Seneca.

  13. It would be an amazing time to come into the university, but all of these changes are great for everyone with a UNT degree. Every UNT degree is worth more than it was a few years ago and it's only going to get better.

  14. No one in Florida knows McCarney? Really? I believe he was on Florida's national championship team's coaching staff. Do you think a guy with the fire and personality that McCarney has just sat around the offices at Florida and never was seen in public? Really? Every staff in the Big XII and the SEC (to name just a couple of conferences) knows Coach Mac and so do many of the opposing fans whose teams played against Florida and Iowa State. He is a "Fry guy" and that makes him pretty well known to folks who follow college football, to high school coaches across Big XII and SEC territories and to coaching staffs across the nation. Nobody knows the guy, really? I'd take Coach Mac each and every day of the week over Leach...for many reasons. I want UNT to win and to win with respectability. I don't want a coach who is popular because he is a clown around the media, and one who really hasn't won anything...did I miss the year Texas Tech won the Big XII conference crown?

  17. I think we're severely overrating the McCarney hire. Sure he's a respected coach but unless you're in Iowa or have some sort of connection to Mac nobody really knows the guy. Leach is known and recognizable nationwide. As for FAU getting him....I highly doubt it since he can get something a lot better. But if they do get him then more power to them...it greatly increases the perception of the league.

  25. Tailgating is really not that complicated, I don't think. Go to the parking lot for which you have a parking pass. Park, then start tailgating. From what I was told, you can choose your spot up to 90 minutes prior, after that festival parking. Just like at Fouts, you can't pop up your tent and block the row unless all of the spots have been filled up. If you want to tailgate on a green area or an end cap area, get there early and back up to one of those spots, or get there later carry your stuff from where you park to where you want to be. As far as traffic, they are going to post online (maybe mail?) information on traffic patterns. Its stiil 25 days away, so I don't see any need to provide the information more than a few weeks in advance at the most. Otherwise everyone will lose it or forget it and the we will have a complaint post about how athletics didn't send out reminders on the traffic pattern.

  27. I have waited 17 long years for September 10th. Waited through the plauges of crickets, the urine troughs in the unbearably hot bathrooms, the warm Cokes, terrible sightlines, the peeling paint. I know there are many posters who have waited much much longer. Hellfire, there are some that have waited 50+ years. I wonder if when the I am in my seat and I take in the atmosphere. The first rate band on a first rate field. The team touching Spiriki when they run on to the field. When I realize that Apogee is not just an internet board dream. I wonder if there will be a sports-cry. Not sure if I will be able to contain myself. I wonder how many of you feel the same. Disclaimer: It is extremely manly and macho to cry when it is related sports and/or the Mean Green.

  28. SO...I was planning a little "backdoor action". I have scouted driving up from Richardson via Bush and I-35, cutting south at 377 to a road that winds around to the west and intersects Bonnie Brae about a mile south of the tennis center. Then I planned to come north on Bonnie Brae and enter at the tennis center to get to the Victory lot. The map implies that I won't be allowed to do that. Are you kiddin' me?!!!

  29. According to the article 18,000 people die per year in America because they don't have insurance. Our healthcare is already reduced quality, high priced health care. Canadians live longer than us, obviosuly they aren't experiencing the reduced quality healthcare you refer to. Elderly in England experience less health problems than here, so once again where is the reduced quality? When you go to the doctor an he see's you for a total of 2 minutes and bills you $250 dollars do you feel like you received quality healthcare or got your money's worth?

  30. Maybe add MEAN GREEN, and just do it once, then wait a minute (or a couple of minutes) before doing it again? NORTH...............TEXAS MEAN................GREEN And maybe the cheerleaders could alternate which side of the stadium starts.

  31. So I'm a student looking for some opinions on the best plan of action on gameday. I plan on starting my tailgate (about 15 people at the most)at 2 by the latest. Would it be better to just set up and tailgate at Fouts or do the drop off thing? Where are the majority of the students going to be set up? (not necessarily concerned with the greeks as I'm not fan of their horrible music choices at rediculous volume levels) What type of crowd will be tailgating in the "drop off grass" area? And also I have a few in my tailgate who will have to buy tickets as they are not UNT students so I would probably have to teradown early to get their tickets.

  35. If Crooked Crust's pizza is better than the Tomato's then they must have had some bad pizza. Crooked Crust has good cheese, toppings, and sauce, but their crust is worse than cardboard! I was disappointed when Hot Box closed down because they had the best pizza. Sure, it was a little pricey, but I always got the pizza of the month so it was half price.

  36. I don't think it's terrible or wrong to say the casual fan does not pay attention to assistants, and probably knows Leach's name ("Yay pirates!") before knowing Mac's. Still, I think he is one of the best guys we could have hired. Let him make his mark on the national scene starting in Denton.
    1 point
  37. I sure he means the casual fan, and no matter how you cut it Leach has a much higher profile nation wide. I hope Leach comes to the Belt it will help everyone get better. I do think that McCarney will be an outstanding coach here and very well may lead North Texas to an Auto bid conference.

  38. Interesting article. It says that there are eight serious contenders for the starting jobs but only two are settled. Maybe it's just me but I feel that four are fairly well settled. I think that Tomlinson, JJ. Johnson, Fortenberry and A. Johnson will be starters but there are several contenders for the fifth spot. To me the problem is Y'Barbo. Originally I thought that Y'Barbo would be moved to center (because of his height) and become the heir apparent when J.J. leaves. That was before Boone Feldt committed and it's looking as if center will not be a problem for the next four years. Y'Barbo may be too good to be stuck with the twos and needs to move to a position where he'll have a better chance of starting. The other two serious contenders for starting positions IMO are Feeley and Adedipe. Feeley's knee may be iffy and Adedipe had missed a couple of seasons before showing up here last year, plus he was a little overweight and out-of-shape. Both seem solid backups and capable of starting. The eighth player is likely Anyiam but it might also be the freshman Lemon, who I believe was a good find. If Bean has gotten his legs rehabbed maybe he could even be a contender. This year is the concern but thinking ahead...seven of whom I consider the top ten offensive linemen return plus the two Feldts. The o-line could easily become the highest-rated unit next year.

  43. Denton has some of the best amateur (future professional) musicans in the known universe. Many of them play local clubs. Some of them you will see in future Grammy Awards Shows, but if Denton hotels are full... ...about 15 minutes south of the Denton City Limits are some fine hotels in the vicinity of the Texas Motor Speedway off Interstate 35-W. Probably would be less Game Day traffic coming from that interstate back into Denton than the other interstate that goes to Dallas. Just sayin... 47. First, tell him thanks for the football coaches, stadium, and pretzels. Second, ask whether he'll try to leverage the stadium into more home-and-home series with maybe some MWC schools to gain some exposure there, so they'll more familiar with us when we take over their conference after Texas A&M - and possibly Oklahoma and Missouri - abandon the Big 12 creating several black hole-type vacuums in the college football realignment continuum in 2013 or sooner. Third, ask him if he has any Proustian memories about first taking the job when he hears hits songs from 2001 like "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy featuring Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent. Fourth, ask him if the sky bridge that will someday be built to ferry footwalkers from the campus to roughly the Apogee Stadium area will be lit with candle or light bulbs or those long light bulbs that look like light sabers, but which break too easily when you try to use them as light sabers. Fifth, ask him if there are any plans to try to leverage the stadium in getting an indoor football league team for Denton. Sixth, ask him if there will be any special plans to keep the traffic flow around the beer barn running smoothly on game day. Seventh, ask him if the new green helmets have any special use beyond the intent for which they were manufactured. Eighth, ask him if the ticket takers at the gate will be wearing boater hats like barber shop quartet singers or beanies like Shriners. Ninth, ask him if the shade will be cool enough for the people who buy tickets and sit in their seats but then don't stand and cheer at the games. Tenth, ask him if we'll be able to taste the difference in the stadium's new gourmet popping corn or his name isn't Orville Redenbacher. Eleventh, ask him if he can get Corky Nelson, J.T. Smith, Keith Wilkerson, and Erric Pegram and Phil McGraw to sing the national anthem as a small choir. Twelfth, ask him if he Board has given President Rawlins the power to unilaterally discuss our move to the Mountain West Conference with their commissioner. Thirteenth, ask him if he ever considered constructing a tailgating area that already included black metal grills on a steel post like you used to see at city parks. Fourteenth, ask him if he ever considers getting back into coaching on those odd days where he goes to the Darrell Dickey practice field to watch Dan McCarney put the team through their paces. Fifteenth, ask him if the NCAA will ever investigate Baylor, Indiana, Vanderbilt, and Duke for theft, fraud, or misuse of funds for getting BCS money all these years but yet still sucking. Sixteenth, given how the popularity of the sport has grown in the southern part of the United States, ask him when we can expect an Apogee Ice Arena for the future UNT/North Texas hockey program. Seventeenth, ask him if the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides, and if so, how did that figure in the building of the Apogee Stadium. Eighteenth, ask him which helmet he would want on his bust if he were going into the Hall of Fame. Nineteenth, ask him if they ever considered building a two or three or four storied parking structure adjacent to the Apogee Stadium, and if not, what was the main impediment to them doing so. Twentieth, ask him if the Denia Park residents have been offered seating in the visitors section of the stadium as kind of a good will offering for all of their help along the way to building Apogee Stadium. Twenty-first, ask him how old he was when he learned how to tie his shoes. Twenty-second, ask him whether we can expect to see the Sun Belt all-girls soccer team tournament at Apogee Stadium. That's all I can think of right now.
