  1. Ok, everyone.... Sit down. Take a deep breath. Light a nice smelling candle and rub some jasmine oil on your temples. Close your eyes and think of a babbling brook...feel the anxiety washing down that stream and away from you. Now, open your eyes, and let this settle in. HE'S NOT WRONG AND A G5 LEAGUE IS NOT THE SAME AS 1-AA

  2. I’m 100% okay with the Big Ten/SEC (and change) breaking off and with regional rivalries taking over. I don’t know how sustainable it is financially, but I’d watch Tulane/Tulsa over Vanderbilt/VaTech any day of the week.

  3. On the surface, not right now. Sure, I agree with you. But once the interest declines further the TV deals will shrink significantly. Then, we'll be on track to being almost as irrelevant. I give it a decade.

  6. Yes, there's a huge gulf between the SEC/Big 10 and the Big XII/ACC. But there's an even huger gulf between the Big XII/ACC and G5. Four conferences get a seat at the table, and teams in those 4 conferences average about 10 times the TV revenue that G5 teams get. If TV revenues continue to diminish enough in the future, that could change.

  7. Very defeatist attitude. Maybe you feel that way in private but saying it publicly doesn’t exactly endear you to fans.

  8. Don’t kid yourself, Cougar King. There is no “P4”. There is the SEC. The Big 10. And then everyone else. The ACC and Big 12 are just as irrelevant as the rest of G5 in football now and will only become more so…

  9. DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team has signed former Pac-12 All-Freshman forward Grant Newell. The transfer joins the Mean Green after playing two seasons at California where he started 39 games for the Golden Bears, scored in double figures 14 times and was named to the conference's all-freshman team honorable mention in 2023 after receiving three votes from league head coaches. Newell was one of just seven Pac-12 freshmen to earn at least three votes. He will have two years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-9 Chicago native played in a total of 63 games over the two years for Cal and averaged 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest over those two seasons. The big man showed his range as he knocked down 39 3-pointers too. Newell has recorded three double-doubles in his career, all against Pac-12 opponents, including a 21-point and 10-rebound performance at Washington as a freshman. He was 10-of-18 from the floor in the game. Newell had another double-double his freshman season against Colorado when he pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with 13 points. Newell became the first Cal freshman since Jaylen Brown in 2016 to record multiple double-doubles in a season. He also had a double-double last year with an 11-point and 10-rebound performance against rival Stanford. Newell graduated from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, in 2022. Prior to that he played at Whitney Young High School in Chicago where he was an All-City Special Mention in 2021. Newell was a three-star prospect by ESPN and held offers to DePaul, South Florida, Nevada, St. Bonaventure, East Carolina, Kent State and Youngstown State in addition to Cal coming out of IMG. This summer he chose North Texas over UAB, Charlotte, Wichita State, Rice, East Carolina, Tulsa, Arizona State, Saint Mary’s, Stanford and New Mexico among others. Newell joins a North Texas signing class that includes incoming freshman Tyran Mason (Plano HS) and transfers Jasper Floyd (Fairfield), Latrell Jossell (SFA), Johnathan Massie (Longwood), Brock Vice (Creighton) and Atin Wright (Drake). For more information on UNT men's basketball tickets, contact the Mean Green Ticket Office at 940-565-2527 or at ticketoffice@unt.edu. Fans can visit the UNT Athletics Ticket Office located at Gate 2 of DATCU Stadium between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  10. Just be a successful mid major! Merg with the MWC. Establish a playoff with a championship. I can see BB becoming the major driver for UNT sports.

  11. Yeah I'm getting real tired of us just being bitches and giving up. I get it...Bama has a million more resources than we do. But Guayana is a country just as much as the USA is. Why would you quit trying to climb the ladder unless you're just soft and don't care? I'll tell you this, I care. And I'll keep throwing money at this dumpster fire because I'm proud to be an Eagle. Then....there's logic. I understand the reality. But to be public about it just seems so lame.

  13. That's the thing . . . the money is not there for most G5's, so they will be more willing to play bodybag games. And P4 teams will have zero incentive to schedule home-and-home series with G5 teams. So the P4 teams will use increasingly weaker G5 teams to have 8-home game schedules and an easy path to bowl eligibility. So I don't ever see "P4" and "G5" ever completely breaking off from each other. P4 needs G5 to avoid "destroying each other." But I do see it being more difficult than ever for G5 teams to compete with P4 teams.
    4 points
  14. Yea.....he's right. It's just a matter of time before this BS implodes on itself. The money is not there for most G5's and the P4s will destroy each other.

  15. Memphis did the same last year, correct? That team was mentally weak, and played a game reflective of their coach’s NBA background. No defense and a bunch of one on one offense. UAB, because of Kennedy, worries me much more than a Hardaway led Memphis.

  16. Of course they/we are getting raided. Top G5 talent is leaving and being replaced with P4 bench players. When the former P4 produce, they’ll leave again. I know it’s cynical, but I’d be very surprised to see our transfers finish their careers at UNT…Especially after they have a good season. Some P4 will just offer them a good payday and/or a “better chance to get drafted.” It’s a year to year basis as a Mean Green fan. I’m impressed with the longevity/production of Gabe Blair, Jett Duncan, Ridge Texada, Damon Ward, Jordan Brown, and the Rod Browns of our Mean Green. Did I miss anyone? I hope I’m wrong regarding all the pessimism. I think we should have a good team this year., though. Still looking forward to the season. GMG!

  18. How is this the defeatus unless you're a delusional fan who doesn't realize there's a significant difference? For years, people come on here and ditch and moan about coach talk, and then a coach finally says something truthful and something that everybody knows is true, and then people want to bitch because he says that. I did not see anything he said about giving up, but I did see him commenting that we have to find different ways to do relevant, which is the same thing so many on here moan about constantly.

  19. Over more than a decade ago I posted a marketing plan for the survival of G5’s. Darn good plan too. In fact, I used what I learned in my North Texas “Marketing Problems” class. I also have been saying for decades that time is of the essence. Those of you who mocked me will remember. Well, we did build a new stadium and even a nice indoor practice facility. But unfortunately we failed miserably at what was really important, WINNING and building a strong supportive fan base. We made very foolish decisions in hiring head coaches and even more so in their employment contracts. It cost us dearly. We lost well over a decade of opportunity, settling for mediocrity. Were we ever going to be invited to the P5? Of course not. But there will be a lot great schools left out as well. Had we had quality leaders in our Administration we would be a program other name schools would want to align with making what would be seen as a quality conference. But then again…….whats the saying? How does it go? All together now. But we are North Texas.

  25. Good job of offering notable South Oak Cliff Golden Bears. Below are known offers; indicated in brackets. The 2024 Bears will be extremely deep on both lines. The offensive skill guys will be the weak link. Should be ranked top 3 in pre-season in Class 5A - Division 2. May not have enough to get past the defending champion PNG. who would meet prior to the championship. Spring Game is tomorrow night. 26. Don't let reality get in the way. You have P5s paying their squad members who might never see the field during the game more than 95% of the G5s can pay their best players. The other reality is we have an alum base that, for the most part, does not care about athletics. He is not being defeatist or delusional like many fans when he says we have to find another way to make this work.

  34. You are just looking for reasons to be pissy. He redshirted his freshman year and then played for us for 4 years after that starting 35 games in that span. He used his free covid year (after he had already served his 5 years to play 4 here) to go to one of the top 20 academic universities in the nation where was on the SEC academic honor roll. Great young man and I am proud to call him a North Texas alumnus.

  41. UNT has a huge %. UT does as well. But unlike UNT, UT has a huge % of football nuts and t-shirt fans. Historical conservative universities, a la Texas Tech, does not. Baylor does not. SMU does not. Nutsack does not. Etc. They're there, just not in a sweeping %. I would say UNT and UT takes the cake in this race. Not a race I want to be a part of. And had I done better due diligence selecting a university from 1500 miles away while waiting to separate from the military, I wouldn't be. But I'm not a beta male and therefore can never be a t-shirt fan. Not in my DNA.

  43. Forget it, if NT moves down from D1. Competitive or not; being in the highest official classification has benefits. NT was in a league like this in the old 1aa days, and it was a nightmare in terms of coverage, support, and financially. I don't see any rationale why an official separation between P and G teams should happen. The P's already get most of the money and coverage. What do they have to gain?
    1 point
  44. Include relegation in the model. Teams that play in the G5 championship get automatically moved to P4. Lowest P4 teams, get moved to G5 to replace the two lost teams.
