Are we all too stupid to realize that the times we're talking about are history that most people have forgotten about, or never even learned? Or are we too stupid to realize that Washington, Jefferson, et.al, were a product of their times? Not to justify it, but it's true. We are 155 years past all of that. Those founding fathers are not being honored because they were slave owners, it's because they devised a plan to create the greatest country the world has ever seen. Is this a perfect world? Are we a perfect country? No. But we have evolved to a point where the Amendments to the Constitution corrected many of those wrongs, at least on paper. We're the only country that warred with itself to end slavery. Can everyone be changed by words on a piece of paper? Hardly. Only one person can change the hearts of man (people) and that is by His grace and our acceptance of His forgiveness. The inherent fallibility of humans gives rise to these "errors" in judgement and behaviors re. slavery and other wrongs. We have come so far, but we all know there is a ways to go yet. We have to stop living in just a portion of the past and look forward to even more greatness. The foundation for greatness is there for all of us. We have to learn from our mistakes, but if we continue on our path to erase history, we'll have learned nothing.6 points

This is what I was afraid of. I remember after Charlottesville, and the statues really became an issue, the President was having a press conference and he mentioned "What about George Washington? You like him? Is he next? What about Thomas Jefferson? You like him? Because he was major slave owner." The media told him he was being ridiculous. Now it is happening. My fear is not necessarily about the statues. My fear is where does it end? I really fear Churches will be next because most Churches regard LGBTQ as sinful. I fear that people will start saying that is bigotry and they will start destroying Churches. People may say that I am being ridiculous, but that's what they told Trump about Geo Washington and Thomas Jefferson statues. To me this virus was already a trial run. Telling people they can do Church online instead of in person. How long before they go after Churches because they offend LGBTQ? Just my honest opinion.6 points

core concept? you keep suggesting that you're not scarred of the virus...and that if you get the virus you'll likely recover. that is the definition of selfish thinking. you're not wearing the mask just for you, but for the protection of everyone around you. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/06/21/880832213/yes-wearing-masks-helps-heres-why https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/06/world/asia/japan-coronavirus-masks.html obviously the full science isn't known...we've been actively battling and learning for what, 3-ish months now? if masks protect even a little bit it seems worth the mild-to-moderate discomfort...and that seems a shared sentiment by many business owners, likely many of the same stores/restaurants/bars/you name it that you've been frequenting: https://www.texastribune.org/2020/06/20/face-mask-order-dallas-harris-travis-bexar/ while both history and logic always indicated, now statistical trends since the re-open suggest that we're likely heading for another shut-down at some point and that most non-essential businesses are going to be operating for a finite amount of time. if masks can help extend that window for these business you care about...is that not worth it to you? https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html hey look everyone! the Civil Liberties Belt is the new US Corona Hot Spot! who ever could've guessed? as I've mentioned before...about half of my business and personal income comes from the service industry. my city and state (Portland, Maine) are heavily dependent on restaurants and tourism...10-12% of our state GDP comes from the service industry, another 4-5% from hotels/hospitality...we're basically neck-and-neck with Nevada as the most vulnerable should dining and tourism stop cold...so I'm actually very glad to read that you're out supporting local business...for both the sake of my business and my personal sanity I too have been grabbing snacks and beverages on local patios as we're slowly re-opening... but do it douchebaging safely. not for you. for everyone. it's shared inconvenience.5 points

So, just to get back on topic and so I am clear, players want a song removed that no longer has racist words because of the music the words are sung to? Reminds me of a pastor back in the early 2000's when "contemporary Christian music" became common in churches. The older members were none too happy about this, and the pastor was quick to state, "There is no Christian music, only Christian lyrics." To steal a line from SL, at the end of the day I really don't care what UT does or doesn't do, but somebody will always find something to bitch about if they look hard enough. These mascots, fight songs, etc... aren't enough to keep many a young man or woman from accepting a scholarship to these schools.4 points

<I very much dislike Disney so I am happy to throw that in the trash.> I think it is important to tell the full story of the people we are honoring, and not hide it. When Kobe Bryant died, some people were very vocal about the part where he was very credible accused of rape and admitted he was very wrong about the whole encounter. That is the kind of conversation we can have about every one of the people in our nation that we choose to honor. The point is to have an ongoing conversation about each of the pillars of our culture and discuss their value. It cannot and should not be a one-time conversation and then shut up forever. That ongoing conversation should be inclusive of all the stakeholders of this country or the institution and what have you. As for removing statues to people who were problematic, an amenable solution is to tell that story prominently and not put up a hagiography.4 points

I think the biggest difference is every team Traylor has coached for has run some sort of a spread offense. I think he'll have a better handle on what their offense will look like. Frank Wilson was an SEC ground and pound guy. He tried to fit a square peg(SEC smashmouth offense) into a round hole(CUSA - most teams run the spread) I think Traylor fits the CUSA mold a lot better.3 points

We have people calling for any monument of George Washington (First POTUS and leader of the American Revolution) and Thomas Jefferson (Third POTUS and principal author of the Declaration of Independence) to be torn down. To be frank, without George Washington, we might not have a country with which Shaun King can even make such a comment freely.3 points

Nice racist dogwhistle. I'm going to take a quick pause on trolling and break from the Cougar King character (yes, this is me playing a character whenever I'm bored) and be my actual self since this is a serious time and topic. As a person of color, all I have been seeing from some people, especially Boomers like yourself (when I say Boomers, I don't mean just white people since I have no idea what color you are, but ANY person from the old generation.) are these microaggressions and whataboutisms. All you have to do is SIT DOWN and LISTEN! LISTEN to what people are saying. Look at what guys like Abner Haynes and Mean Joe went through at NTSU in the 1960s. YOU HAVE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD THAT WERE STUDENTS THEN. IT WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO. Dude, there is still a lot of racism out there and deflecting like this is being a part of the problem and not a part of the solution!!!! MAKING SNIDE REMARKS AND IMMEDIATELY DISMISSING THINGS MAKES YOU NO BETTER THAN THOSE IN THE 60s WHO WERE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY. AND YES IT WAS BLATANTLY OBVIOUS WHAT YOU WERE REFERRING TO WHEN YOU MADE A REFERENECE TO "MUSIC IN THE LOCKER ROOM." Remember, many players and potential recruits plus their parents read this board. You need to sit down and take a self-reflection.3 points

😂 Rock on, because we all have our opinions. I would hope people wouldn't take anything in this forum personally. I don't expect anyone to agree with anything I post, for sure! "Good"discussion is in the eye of the reader, as well. I do get something from a lot of the information presented though. Nobody has to--or should--believe or agree with all of, or any of it. 👍2 points

The way he speaks and his approach to athletics is so refreshing in comparison to RV. Can you imagine, as much progress as we've made for the last few years, if Wren had been here longer? I might not have as much faith in Littrell as I did a few years ago, but I damn sure have faith in Wren. Dude is an absolute stud, and I'm glad we have him.2 points

It’s a possibility. Especially for non-P5 schools that don’t have the big TV deals and can’t afford having no fans in attendance. But financially this means trying to stay afloat longer without that revenue stream, which is a separate issue.2 points

"We've never had an empty seat, and we certainly won't in Oklahoma." 6k people in a 19k capacity arena LMAO. A whole lot of photos from the spray tan yankees twitter where the upper bowl is missing... An old white dude lying about the size of something, what a surprise. This man is so insecure he spent gobs of time talking about walking down a ramp slowly and explaining how he drinks water. He takes twitter comments personally like a 15 year old girl, how on earth is this your guy????????2 points

The generals whose names are on army bases knew what the fight was about. Most were commissioned US officers at the time who took up arms against their fellow colleagues. I am good with calling them traitors. My ancestors were among them. I don’t even need a degree in history to figure it out (although spoiler alert I do have one).2 points

La Tech is substance over style They win meaningful games....and winning 10 games in a season is not a miracle. Hope we can get to substance like that soon.... Littrell is being paid to get results like Holtz. Time for us to get our return on investment. Potential is nothing. Just win.1 point

You were unhappy with responses that didn’t address your assertions so I tried to answer you directly paragraph by paragraph. I am also including some excerpts from my bio terrorism and public health textbooks as backing evidence to my statements. 1) Yes we DO know that more people are dying and they aren’t all old people. Plus - as I have said ad nauseam - it isn’t only about deaths. People are suffering from heart and kidney problems from this, in addition to lingering lung problems. “Recovered” means not dead, not free of sometimes serious health problems. 2) It is wrong to not wear a mask in enclosed public places like bars, especially if you generally don’t practice physical distancing or use a mask. It protects others from you. 3) You likely won’t die. You are more likely to just help spread the virus and not know it. Take a look at the rising cases in FL, AZ, and TX. My current city relaxed measures and people stopped wearing masks. We went from around 25 cases a day to today’s reported 192 within a week. Has been rising all week. I think you can do the math. Masks aren’t perfect but they help. The problem with your belief is that it probably affects you less than it affects others around you. The drunk driver usually survives the crash, if you get my analogy. 4) I wish I could see you at Apogee but I can’t make it. If I could, however, I would skip that beer. You are one of the people I look forward to seeing but I would not expose my family to you because of what you practice. Not this year. 5) The virus wasn’t completely avoidable but we did little to prevent its spread in the US. We didn’t have early testing capacity. We didn’t adequately try to do contract tracing of incoming infected patients from overseas. We are the most powerful nation in the world and we had advanced notice. We should have tested everyone coming from China early on and then from Korea, Europe, and a few other selected countries at a minimum. As I understand that still isn’t happening. We could have require a two week at home quarantine upon arrive with or without testing. That rarely happened. We should have encouraged masks earlier but we didn’t because we didn’t have sufficient masks for medical professionals so we couldn’t. Then masks were stigmatized as not cool or not manly or some bullshit. Our political leadership didn’t follow their own guidance and even blatantly disregarded local regulations when visiting. Not to mention downplayed the virus and it’s seriousness while pushing false curses and false hopes for vaccines. It was almost a complete failure all around. New Zealand zeroed our COVID recently and then apologized when two cases popped up. We have over a 100k dead and rising and we haven’t had a task force briefing in over a month. Simply put, we knew how to deal with this kind of thing and chose not to. I hope this adequately addressed your questions, Thomas. Stay healthy because I look forward to that next beer with you sometime. Ben1 point

It's why I voted for 2017 over 2013. 2017 beat everyone they were supposed to and the 4 (Iowa, SMU, FAU, Troy) teams they lost to would have beat 2013. I can't forgive the absolute no shows 2013 put out against UTSA and Tulane. Two teams we had no business losing to and cost us the C-USA championship. 2013 likes to thump their chest about their bowl win and how that makes them better, but how can you compare the bowls when 2013 played a mediocre 7-5 UNLV and 2017 had to play 11-2 Troy, who beat a top 20 LSU in Baton Rouge! I actually don't know which team was actually better. They were complete opposites. 2013 had a vanilla, boring offense and depended on it's amazing defense and ST to make game changing plays. While 2017 had an electric offense that often had to make up for poor defense. When it's this close I just like to defer to the team that took care of business when they were supposed to and got closer to a conference championship.1 point
