  1. Last August the doctor told me that I had colorectal cancer. All I could do was to watch mean green football while going through chemotherapy and radiation on the TV. So for next year, I can return to Denton and watch my team in person! My 3 month check up was last week and was great! Only one thing for me is to stay healthy enough to watch us play Mean Green football in Denton and Dallas! GMG!

  2. You are dead wrong. When did you graduate? There has never been a better time than now to be associated with UNT. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are dead wrong. The apathy you talk about on campus has disappeared except for those who are going to be negative no matter what. Upgrades are being made everywhere you look in facilities and in professors and in research and in administrators. I give you our new President as the best example I can give...Our President is not a "placeholder", he is a dynamo and is making significant...very significant changes across the University. I sit on the search committee currently looking for our next VP for Advancemnent (arguably the second most important position at the University for the future of UNT), and the excitement from the committee members is amazing...we have a Dean, two tenured professors, our AD, the VP for Research, a student representative, two large individual donors, a member of the UNT Foundation Board and me...representing donors and UNT Alumni through my Alumni Board membership. The people applying for the position hold the position at PAC12, SEC, etc. Universities and cannot wait to be selected so they can come to UNT. Each talks of the excitement surrounding UNT on the national level...national level folks. You speak of change in the administration..,well, I guess you haven't been paying very close attention because that change you speak of has already been happening. UNT has more Fulbright Scholars than any other Texas University, so I question your comment about professors who do not want to be "there". I interact with many UNT professors on campus and off and each one is super engaged. In addition, our professors are getting younger...you can't just fire a tenured professor, so this takes some time, but do some research and check out the new professor hires over the last 2-3 years across the disciplines. You will be very positively impressed. So, discourage your kids all you want. That is every parents right, but try to take your blinders off regarding the current state of affairs and future tract UNT is on before you do. Because right now, your just dead wrong about YOUR University, and your comment reflects very little current knowledge or understanding. That is too bad and is one of the challenges UNT faces. Even its own alumni are ignorant about what is going on...and that is on UNT as much as it is the Alumni. UNT does not "toot it's own horn" nearly enough. Oh, know who understands that and is out to do something about it? Yep, that new Prez who is currently making change after change to bring UNT into a prominent position within the state and nation. That guy will not allow UNT to take a back seat to anyone. You can take that to the bank.

  3. Please at least take the time to write the facts. He had just lead his JC team to the National #1 ranking and was placed on front page NCAAJC Webb site. He then suffered an injury that sidelined him until the playoff game at the end of the season and the bowl game. So to say his stats were average are misleading. The team lost the next several games without him at QB and fell out of contention, so I do think it showed he was making the difference. He came back while not being fully healed and lead the team to a come from behind win in the bowl game In the last seconds. In regard to practice, yes he did well in the scrimmage. 100% comp. percentage, 1 75 yard TD pass, 1 20 yard TD pass in the back corner of the end zone, and ran a 9 yard QB draw for a running TD against the ones on a 3rd and goal. No Int. ( the other QB's had Int some had more than one) I know our favorite reporter did not mention any if this but the Mean Green Football site did. Practice does in fact matter for those that never played sports. Name me a QB that always sucked in practice and then was named the starter? And yes he knows the entire playbook and the pre-snap reads! Notice who the other QB's speak to when they come to the sideline! May never see the field again but continued to be a team player and always was helping the other QB's during the games. Just a good kid busting his tail to be the best he can be and to help his teammates be the best they can be as well. Just gets tired of the people that hide behind a screen and attack some of these players. I know you have the right to write whatever you desire even if not accurate but just wish that it would not be forgotten that these are not professionals, they are young men who just love the game and most are giving their all to be better.

  4. Yeah, at least Rick is good at som...wait....what? This is about pitiful as it gets. He's not raising money, he's not hiring effective coaches that produce, he's not scheduling jack S, so what exactly is he doing for his 250k?

  5. I don't know what the source is for this, but if accurate, this is the most damning piece of evidence against Rick. Not the Mens & Womens B-ball fiasco, Not the Football scheduling issues, Not anything else is more important to an AD's job than dollars brought into the Athletic Department.

  7. To Harry's point, compared to the other "Public Ivy" joint I went to, the professors at UNT are extraordinarily hands on with their students. In my first trip through college, I never actually met or spoke to about 50-60% of my professors. We went through TAs and only TAs. A very unspoken thing about the big flagship schools is that the faculty there are generally interested in research and publishing. Those pesky students and classes are a nuisance.

  8. I definitely agree with Cerebus. UNT also has one of the best Forensic Science programs in the world to add to the argument against UNT being a degree mill and just a music school. whenever I have kids, I definitely wouldn't discourage them from attending the University their dad went to. I do agree with some of you that the thoughts of (what if) I went to a powerhouse school has crossed my mind more then once. I have siblings that are all attending Arkansas for college and when I go and visit them at Fayetteville, it definitely is a Pure university town culture, atmosphere, and spirit then Denton/UNT. However, I think that UNT is still a great school to go to. There is that college lifestyle here and I am proud to have earned my degree at this University. To add to this topic, is does hurt that us UNT fans can't hold a conversation about sports (especially football) with people who graduated from a Powerhouse school. I would love to walk into a conversation and talk about how UNT upset Tennessee or Iowa. I would love to go visit other areas in Texas and see UNT T-shirt fans walking around like you see ATM or UT T-shirt fans. Maybe that day will come? Maybe it won't? But I would never discourage someone going to UNT, and especially my own kids.

  9. I just have to disagree with this. There may be apathy at a lot of level about athletics. That doesn't extend to academics. In just the last decade or so UNT's Military History program went from almost no existent to the strongest program west of the Mississippi. UNT's faculty are constantly being asked to teach at the top institution in the world because they are the best of the best. That didn't happen over night, and it didn't happen without a lot of great leadership, planning and execution. Sure, there isn't a forum for it on this board, Dale Hansen doesn't have a weekly History Wrap-up Program, and UNT90 isn't sending out daily diatribes about improving visiting professor schedules, but it's a huge important part of UNT as an academic entity. Stop letting the under performance of the athletic program color your vision of the rest of the University.

  10. I've been dragging my kid to UNT football games since she was 7 years old, so she's literally grown up with them. As she enters high school, and starts more seriously pondering her future college prospects, the existence or lack thereof of a football is absolutely the last thing on her mind. She's looking at college as an investment of time and money, and she wants the biggest payback she can get from it for the least amount of out of pocket expense (Dad's been counseling her on student debt as he begrudgingly writes his own checks to SallieMae of $544 each month). I love UNT football. Can't really imagine life in Texas without it anymore. But my kid gets in to MIT and UNT, both offering full rides, she's very unlikely to stick around in Denton. Hell, let's throw Ohio State and Alabama in there. She's still gonna choose Cambridge. More realistic level, let's say she gets into UTD and UNT. All other things being equal, she's gonna go to the place that pays her back with the most opportunity. Maybe that includes football, maybe it doesn't. Maybe both choices lead to the first two years at community college for 1/10th the price. Maybe we're just weird, but college is getting too expensive to be paying $40,000 annual premiums just to watch a bunch of guys running around beating on each other six times a year. NOW RAISE THE STUDENT FEE!

  14. I have 0 insight on it as well and won't act like I do. However, CUSA would benefit from pushing the envelope rather than taking a backseat. North Texas is hungry for a baseball team and we sit in an area that is littered with baseball talent and CUSA must know that. Also, recruiting in baseball in terms of getting talent (not evaluation) is far, far easier than both football and basketball. And with that it is easier to have faster and prolonged success in baseball. TCU and Dallas Baptist are reaping the benefits of the talent pool that is DFW while we sit back and just talk about what could be. Arguably our most successful program is softball (and yes I know they are just 14-15 overall but with a tough OOC slate) and the sports are similar in terms of recruiting and productivity. To me, for what it's worth, getting a baseball program stood up should be priority #1. All resources should be pushed to that priority until it happens. Side note... I was talking with a fellow alum yesterday and we both agreed with a scenario of putting all of our eggs in one basket. It's beyond apparent that UNT cannot be good in everything. So why not devote the majority of our resources in one direction and make a conscious and public effort to be exceptional in one thing, how be it baseball, football or basketball. The current plan isn't working and being great in one thing would supersede being average (at best) across the board. I think we can all agree that we would be comfortable with going 10-2 in football and 8-22 in basketball or 4-8 in football and 22-8 in basketball rather than the current format of 15-15 and 4-8/3-9. Choose, make it public and roll with it. It works and works well for athletic programs such as Duke, KU, UK, Syracuse, SDSU, UNC, Arizona, etc. in basketball and Alabama, USC, Florida State, Boise, TCU, Utah St, Auburn, Georgia, etc. in football. These programs don't necessarily make their commitment "public" like I noted, but they don't have to bc it's very clear what is important to them and they dump resources into what is most important to them. This would piss a lot of people off that like football more than bball and vice versa but I think it's an approach that UNT would benefit from collectively. Call me crazy, but being mediocre (if we're lucky) in everything is apparently not working.

  16. Yo, sometimes opinions suck. True, people are entitled to their own opinion...doesn't mean that they aren't going to suck. And isn't your remark to KRAM the exact same thing KRAM did to ColoradoEagle? I'm confused. Either way, people, quit bashing your own (UNT). Same goals here for everyone. I figured there was some kind of program...problem with that program is that I am assuming there is one and you are believing there is one. Typical 21 yr old student is going to have no actual idea if there is one...that's a problem in its own right. North Texas...being horrible at marketing since 1890.

  18. The Dillman story is one of the most bizzar things I've read this year. Not just the debate on where he will or should play(he will be a wasted talent at tight end) but his ineligibility to play varsity in HS last year as well. Rick

Counseling/Play Therapy(a team from NT was sent to NYC to support post 9-11 child play therapy efforts) Computer Science Emergency Management Accounting And my favorite...Minor in Female Anatomy. I made that last one up of course, but it could happen. Rick

  22. I have a hard time calling McNulty a "tall QB," since I did the "stand next to test" (which someone on this board made famous) around 2 and a half years ago, and he didn't even look to be quite a legit 6 footer to me. I guess maybe he could have grown a couple of inches since then. Regardless, I just hope this staff (and a certain QB) wakes up to the QB situation and lets the best man win regardless of size or stature. I'm afraid that we're going to have a tough time winning without getting a major spark from the position.

  23. That's why I didn't even address it. But isn't it interesting that the 5 star talent regressed his first year under Benford? I'm sure that's just a coincidence in Fly's world.

  24. True conversation I had with my 15 year old son last weekend: Son: I think that I want to major in Engineering. Me: Well, you have some pretty good schools in the area. UTA is pretty good and ranked in the top 100.. Son: But, UTA is not a real college. Me: Why would you say that. Son: Because I never hear about them. Their football team must be bad. Me: What about North Texas ? Is it a real college ? Son: Yes, one of my friends wears a North Texas sweatshirt. Perception is everything.

  25. I think your scenario above is a non-starter. MIT vs UNT? Duh, unless they want to play jazz trumpet that choice is obvious. I think the more realistic question would be UNT vs TxSt or UH or even Tech. Not a lot of difference in Tech and UNT, but tons of kids go there because it has that 'big time' label with Big12 sports. Even your MIT vs Alabama is silly. Anyone who knows anything about academics knows that Alabama most SEC schools in generally are not very strong academic schools. (Now most of the Big10, that is a totally different story). I think the effect comes in when kids and parents are considering similar schools. Even if a kid isn't into football or basketball, they may have lots of friends that are and get excited about a school because of the buzz. I remember what George Mason experienced after its tournament run a few years ago. It was pretty amazing. I would almost 100% guarantee they didn't steal any kids away from MIT or Stanford, but both the number and quality of their applications went up dramatically. If UNT were to capture that type of attention, we wouldn't be keeping your kid in state if she had a MIT scholarship in hand, but some kids that might have decided on OKSt, Tech, or Colorado might decide to stay home.

  27. Our strength coach, in addition to getting our players ready to play football, should put our players in a better position to have a professional football career. Those bench numbers are sad and pathetic and would easily push draftable players out of the draft.

  38. You can only sign 28 if you signed 22 or fewer the class before, and you have to have at least 3 mid-term signees (January enrollees) backcounting into the previous class. We signed 25 last year in the class of 2014, counting the 16 high school signees, 1 FBS transfer (Anthony Wallace), 4 JUCO signees, and 4 walkons that we had to count (as announced by Mccarney). We did announce 25 signings in 2014, so we could only sign 25 this class in 2015.

  40. Anyone ever read Skis Against the Atom? I haven't, though I am fascinated by the story of Knut Haukelid and the Norwegian underground. I think their sinking of Hitler's heavy water may have saved hundreds of thousands of lives along with insuring the Allied victory. Of course I have no idea how far along the Nazis were in development of the bomb, but it sounded like they were real close in the documentary, Real Heroes of Telemark, which I thought was very good.
