  1. ...to ask a few questions about Boomer. The nice gentleman who called is an NT alumn working as a fact checker for Texas Monthly. They are going to include Boomer in the Traditions section of their annual football issue. And this morning after I got home from work I took several new hi-res photos of him to send to their photog department. The Texas Monthly staff down in Austin seem like a bunch of really nice folks. I only wished I had taken the photos in the evening, or had a cloudy day, just to eliminate the shadows. In answering the questions to Texas Monthly I made sure they knew specifics of Boomer as a Tradition that separates North Texas from any other BCS program in the nation. I especially included how proud I am of the fact that unlike tU's cap gun or A&M's WWI breach loader, Boomer is not only one of the last remaining muzzle loaded black powder cannons used in BCS college athletics today, but more importantly was designed, hand crafted and assembled on our campus by North Texas students, faculty and alumni. Here below are a couple of photos since the new face lift this summer. In the second photo, everything you see other than the barrel, is brand new. New Barrel Cheeks, new Steel Banding, Locks, Hinges and Pins. All bigger and better than before. I want to say thank you to those who have given me the honor and pleasure to work on this project once again for the Mean Green. I love working with this material, especially the hand crafted solid red oak. That is why Boomer(unlike most of your authentic and replica 19th century cannon) is natural clear-coated wood grain, rather than painted Olive Drab Green. In 1988 I just couldn't paint over the wood because I was so impressed with it's beauty. And finally, let me just say that I know the upgrades completed this summer will not be obvious to most who see and HEAR Boomer this fall. But they are there and they make him and his Limber just about as close and accurate to an original M1841 6 pounder as I think he will ever get. I hope you, the students, alumni and faculty of Mean Green Nation like them. Rick

  4. I have edited my original post in this thread to be more optimistic, so as not to hijack the original topic. Please see below: ******************************************************************* "I'm good with it. QB is indeed...in good hands... I'll also mention that arguably the team's best receiver is...on the team, the OL...a couple of stout players, and DT does...have Riley's wheels...his knowledge of this offense...the final point... The leading tackler is...on D. Pass rush and run defense...huge...areas...over...3-4 wins per season. I'm...sold on the defensive improvement...I am...optimistic. Special teams should be improved...believe...I see it. At any rate, I'm going out on a limb and saying they'll get...6 this year due to...Dunbar... I see 6-7 wins is if the team can play defense, use their special teams well and play more ball-control. WR's will...step up. It's going to hinge on the QB, WR's, DL and the LB's this year IMO."

  5. Thank you for the new stadium and genuine, authentic football staff. But, now let's move on to talk of the future. With Texas and BYU getting their own television stations and conferences, we need to focus on expanding our fan footprint, carbon or otherwise. My wife, as you know, is from Mexico and grew up in Mexico. She migrated legally to the United State, and we often, in moments alone, look at her green card. Like many other Mexicans in America with green cards, she has taken a liking to fútbol americano. North Texas (or, UNT) plays the college version of it. Although she, and many others in her situation, enjoy fútbol americano, they still hew towards the music of their roots and homeland - and other music with roots and homelands further south in the Central and South Americas and the Carribean. We're talking here about Mana, Shakira, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, Vicente Fernandez, Thalia, Juanes, Los Claxons, Estopa, Kany García, Camila, Paulina Rubio, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Chetes, Andrés Calamaro, Ely Guerra, El Cuarteto de Nos, Diomedes Díaz, Jorge Oñate, Lucrecia, Tito El Bambino, K-Paz de la Sierra, El Chapo de Sinaloa, Los Tigres del Norte, Intocable, Van Halen, Pepe Aguilar, Aida Cuevas, Tomatito, Chucho Valdés, Andrés Cepeda, Calle 13, Natalia Lafourcade, Jaguares, and Hello Seahorse! just to name a few. So, my question is, are there plans yet to have UNT (or, North Texas) football games broadcast in Spanish - or, to televise them on any of the local Spanish stations? I know from going to cook outs with my wife's family and friends that Mexicans are no different than White people. We all like to drink beer, eat grilled flank steak, karaoke, have sex with our wives, brutalize piñatas shaped like Chivas de Guadalajara's mascot, and watch sports. My thinking is that because fútbol americano is a sport, and there are lots of Mexicans like my wife who are watching Spanish TV stations and listening to Spanish radio stations, wouldn't it be smart to look into jumping ahead of everyone else in America and get The University of North Texas football games broadcast in Spanish? Imagine the call: "¡Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool de campo! ¡Zack Olennnnnnnnnnnnnn! de los Aguilas de Norte Tejas! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol! ¡Gol!" What say you? I'd hate to think we were just going to surrender the Hispanic fútbol americano market to UTEP, UTSA, and Rice. If George Washington hadn't boomed the bold battle cry, Remember the Alamo!, we'd have never wrested control of the Solomon Islands from the Japanese. It's only 21st Century American to have our fútbol americano games broadcast on Spanish radio and television stations in the Metroplex and throughout the United States. Let's jump ahead of the curve on this one before UT starts charging us $24.95 a week to watch our games on their station and BYU sends its redshirt sophomores on their bicycles to try to convert us. ¡Viva Los Verde Malo!

  6. Despite the risk of going against popular opionion I give you this argument: I think the broadcasting of the game in spanish is a good idea. I do think there is a very real risk though of alienating a large part of the fanbase if it goes any farther than that with things like spanish jerseys. I think, at least from a marketing perspective, it is important to realize that something like that could upset people, especially with a sport like American football, and at the college level. As I said, I think I am going against popular opinion here, but it just seems like something to be very careful with...Except for the Spanish language TV, which is a great idea. Most of this debate always seems to go back to a much larger social and political issue, but I'm trying to avoid that and just stick to marketing. By the way, Why the dislike for Chivas??? You must be a Club America fan?....I've been a Tigres UANL fan since I got to meet the team (by chance) at the Boston Airport.

  10. I havent seen this posted anywhere today, so I thought I'd add it. Sorry if this isnt the right forum. Im not sure if this has anything to do with the Aug. 15 donation, but my guess would be "no". It doesnt seem to have anything to do directly with athletics, but who knows if some of the money will trickle that way or not. Hoping to get some more info on the aug 15 donation. Somebody has to know more tha what has been posted on the subject thus far. http://web3.unt.edu/news/story.cfm?story=12273

  13. This. And we should incorporate a new tradition---specifically for the douchebag bands (thinking of you, Troy) that insist on bringing in amps---fire off Boomer any time a douchebag visiting band attempts to play over the Green Brigade. If they won't stop and respect good sportsmanship, we'll just shoot their asses!

  16. The university has shown a committment to athletics, sadly the alumni have not. MGC membership, although improving, is nowhere near where it needs to be for other conferences to take us seriously. Until the alumni buy in, we will always be a bridesmaid.

  17. Win games in Denton. Take care of internal business. Win more games in Denton. Stop peering over the fences of other conferences. It's completely inconsequential because if they're not the WAC, they are not peering back until there are more wins in Denton.

  27. I wouldn't characterize UTEP as the worst or one of the worst NCAA football programs, however, it has to be one of the worst college football markets. Los Mexicanos like their futbol and tacos; the fine people of El Chuco (aka El Paso) seem supportive, but only if they have a connection to the school... at least that's my feeling when I have matches against my archnemesis, El Mistico Azul, at El Paso County Coliseum...

  28. The poor are already exempt from income taxes. Over 40% of America pays ZERO income tax. Who's not paying their fair share... I agree with you. We gotta reduce how ridiculously big our federal government is and let our states and local government increase taxes and govern more with reduced federal income taxes. I'd much rather pay taxes in Texas and my hometown than to the abyss of the federal government.

  29. Just a positive little side note about people knowing about Coach McCarney and our program... I work in athletics for a high school in East Texas. We were out at practice today and one of our athletes asked me who my college football team is. I told him that I went to North Texas and that I know they haven't won much recently, but that I was still a fan. One of our new coaches heard me say that and quickly turned and said "Yea, but they're about to start winning." He said that he thinks highly of coach McCarney and was very impressed with what he did at Iowa State. Also mentioned how great of a recruiter he is. Not many people out in East Texas know much about the Mean Green, especially in our tiny town. So it was nice to hear someone mention our coach and program, and also believe that we are headed towards success.

  37. You are very wrong, UTEP one of the worst football programs in the NCAA was chosen over NT for CUSA and it was certainly not about winning. Winning at football will help, but public perception and potential are both bigger factors. NT is a huge school in the 5th largest media market in the nation and has recently shown a very impressible dedication to athletics. Politics by member schools may keep NT out of CUSA forever, but other opportunities will evolve. I can't think of any team in the Belt, MAC or new WAC that is a better choice right now, leaving geography out of the equation. Winning will be icing on the cake but stellar attendance numbers might be even more important. You are right obsessing over conference possibilities does nothing but it is the off season favorite topic. NT is finally doing the things to help them both win and be more attractive for opportunities.

  39. Excellent. To see and hear the pride of the grads in that video was amazing. For all too long many UNT grads seemed to discount THEIR university as if it were some second class citizen in the realm of universities...both athletically and academically. But, those times are over! The progress that UNT is making in the classroom academically, within the research community, with facilities (have you seen the new business building as well as this new stadium?), and now with some major league sized donations is simply amazing. If any alum, student or any other person believes UNT is not a major player they are simply ignorant of the facts. I hope all members of the Mean green Nation will now wear their green proudly and strongly. No more, no more...the future is NOW! Show your support for the progress UNT is making by joining the Alumni Association, joining the Mean Green Club, buying season tickets, supporting your academic department with scholarship money, etc., etc. Do what you can...only what you can...but, please, do something to help this great university that is UNT! GO MEAN GREEN & WHY NOT NORTH TEXAS INDEED!

  40. The losses of Riley (yes, Riley) and Robertson temper my expectations a bit. Totally agree that Papa Dodge cost us games. The Punt Return game? Ugh. How much of the effort and quality during the last 5 games was just playing hard for Canales/Glad it wasnt Dodge? Remember when the 2008 Saints won back-to-back games and there was a groundswell to hire Jim Haslett and they ended up as the only wins of his interim tenure? That is not to say McCarney is not heads-and-shoulders better. Just don't want give too much weight to the last five games when there are obvious untested third variables.

  41. Here's the problem on taxes... Liberals want higher taxes, specifically on those who earn high salaries, because they believe in bigger government. Conservatives want taxes to be as low as possible because they believe in smaller government. At the end of the day, they both want a balanced budget and eventually a reduction of debt. In order to do that we have to maximize revenues and minimize expenditures. In order to maximize revenues, we have to hit the sweet spot of tax rates at all income levels. This sweet spot would not discourage economic growth by being too high, and it would not drop below the optimal tax rate. That means everyone needs to contrinute a "fair share" on taxes. The rich, the middle, and the high end of the working class. Just like the Bush tax cuts affected all tax brackets, any increase in taxes must be paid by all income levels. Those who think taxing the wealthy would fix everything is delusional. Ideally, we should shrink the gap of the tax brackets as much as possible. I favor a marginal flat tax above a specific income level. The income level would be determined every year by Congress with the goal to ensure that households living in poverty are basically exempt from income taxes.

  43. 1) We'll have a QB that can see over the offensive line. 2) We have the best running back in the conference. 3) McCarney is making the team more aggressive and energetic. 4) Offensive, defensive, and special teams schemes that actually work at a collegiate level.

  45. This is just off the top of my head. We were only able to pay him well enough to keep him as long as we did by combining his head coaching position with athletic director, and it was stipulated that not be the case at Iowa. It was mentioned after the death of the great basketball coach in that era, Bill Blakely (sp?), that Fry hired him. I thin at one time head football coach and AD were more commonly combined positions than in recent years, but it wasn't a good situation, even in the1970's. Also, I'm wondering if it isn't a little too early to start the "how do we keep "coaches name here" after they start winning big. Maybe it's a situation that could remedy itself if things go well.

  46. Holland is exactly right. Nothing tells the players, "Hey, y'all are boring, so we need to create our own entertainment!" better than the wave. Look folks, the wave is for kids under 10 or adults with short attention spans. If you're so bored at the baseball game, then you need to go to chuck-e-cheese next time. Let the rest of us watch and appreciate the guys who are playing the game.

  48. --You are absolutely correct... I know Perry claims to have reduced property tax in Texas which is amazing since we doesn't even have a state one. I am not certain but I think there was one until the 1960's when we went with a 4% sales tax instead. Actually Perry et. al. by cutting state funding to schools has caused your local property tax to increase. ---We as tax payers in Texas do take a beating from indigent health care at hospitals [often illegals especially near the border]. Most people don't think of that and that we are already paying for that anyway... Knowing that makes the new federal health care program make more sense.... you are already paying for the poor and uninsured.....which includes births etc. ..
