  1. UNT is still playing right? Oh ok. I'll be there.

  2. A few important things to include in the thought process that isn't listed in that article - mainly because the facts are not politically expedient for a left-leaning blog site. 1. Deficit shifting has been going on in Austin (and in every other state capital) for years now. It essentially allows the states to pay forward on long-term projects and projects that span fiscal years so that the budget can balance on paper. 2. For all of the cries of accounting tricks in that article, I didn't see anything showing from whom the State of Texas borrowed the money, at what interest rate and under what terms in order to have a true debt. 3. There is no line-item in the budget for interest to be paid on this debt. It would seem if we had debt, we'd be paying for it in the form of interest payments. 4. The only debt that really shows up on the books are unfunded liabilities, in the form of bond backing the state has done both at the statewide level and for local governments. The state often backs up local municipalities and counties when they are seeking funds for projects, particularly education and infrastructure projects. They are motivated to throw their credit behind smaller/weaker locals as it keeps the state from having to fund some of these projects themselves. ...the comments to the article are even more mis-leading. Texas has made moves that make the state VERY desirable. 25 people from California move to Texas every day. Businesses are relocating here by the drove. These migrations push up the tax base and over the long haul will allow the state to do quite well in terms of revenue in the future. The biggest challenge the state faces today in terms of being able to maintain the budget (and is one of the biggest reason why this state's education system is stretched so thin) is the illegal immigration/anchor baby problem. ...and when you compare the outcome of Northern counties in the state vs. Southern counties in the state, you will see that our education system is in league with the top 25% of the country. When education isn't important at home, it won't be important to the Student. Far too many on the dole in this state, and education for far too many people who shouldn't be here and aren't contributing to the tax base is the reason we have a budget problem here. Politicians won't say this because it isn't PC, but it is the truth.

  3. We should experience a recruiting boon for our T&F teams because of this awesome facility. I mean, the sight-lines for the track events... it's like you're right on top of the action!

  4. I know its really early, and football season is around the corner (which I am excited about), but my friend and I were arguing about the basketball team. I claim we have an excellent shot at making the tourney this year, he claims there is little chance. I'm wonder what y'all (since I got a -1 for putting "you all" last time) think?

  5. La Tech will actually say that's a positive for them. Because now maybe the WAC can go after Sam Houston St or A&M Commerce. Plus, don't forget, the WAC did have 3 teams in the top 25 last year and Boise was really good before they left.....

  6. I would like to see a recognition of all the fans at the opening game who have attended North Texas football games at all three venues. At the very least, try and identify as many of them as possible, and flash their names on the jumbotron. Here is one of the last games played at old Eagle Stadium. http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth61020/m1/196/?q=eagle%20stadium http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth61020/m1/60/?q=eagle%20stadium

  7. The State does not get property tax, only cities, counties, school districts, state colleges, hospitals, municipal utility districts, public imrpovement districts, etc. get property tax.

  10. http://twitter.com/#!/DesNewsKraig/status/96062356970405889 Not sure which way to pull on this--the explosion of the WAC could be positive for us, but Utah State to the MWC would close a door for us.

  15. I'm not advocating that scheduling weaker teams is the way to go and we need to dump bringing Kstate etc here. I am however saying I think its important to have a higher confidence level than we have in the past. I think getting blown out at OU for example at the beginning of the season hurts the rest of our season. BUT I think if you were to play the weaker teams at the beginning instead we would go into the OU game with a better performance and confidence level. Take last year for example. We were losing etc etc etc dodge is fired, canales takes over, we beat western and midd tenn, played other games well (besides ULM) and then went into Kstate game with a belief we could win and look how we competed in comparison to previous years and ooc opponents. Don't get me wrong, I think Dmac will have us much more prepared than Dodge or even Canales and that's really what matters but don't believe for a second that previous winning doesn't help.

  16. But it will make news if we lose. A no-win proposition for this program at this point in time. No FCS opponents for at least 5 years.

  17. So on Sept. 10 Fouts slips into the history books as our former football stadium. With that said will it, at the same time, enter the books as the largest (capacity) exclusive track and field venue on any college campus in America? I think I'd position it as such.

  22. Illegal Immigrants (and often others in various communities) get by sales taxes often by doing business in closed circles. Flea markets, roadside grocers etc are pretty common down in the valley. Federal dollars are a big part of what is funneled to education, and is allocated based on heads, but the bulk of the households I'm talking about here don't pay any federal taxes, so those monies are not being offset at all. Yes, their rent may be funding the property taxes, but the value of this property is a biggest factor that determines its tax value. You can play the stereotype out on your own. Ditto sales tax. Lower income individuals and those who operate completely on cash will pay far less in sales tax than those who have a bank account, debit card, etc. You can find it hard to believe, but the next time you're paying your property taxes if you live in Dallas, take a close look at the parkland hospital line item, and then go check out the waiting room. You then combine these factors in with simple items like the ability of parents to donate time/materials/money to their kid's school districts and the importance of education in the home, and it is easy to see how some school districts far out perform others in the state even though the state/local/federal money being spent per child is the same.

  25. Waiting for Rangers Live to finish so the game will come on, but here is a little clip from ESPN.com. "Dallas Woodrow Wilson LB Chad Polk swarmed with the North defense, keeping the South All-Stars off the board in the first quarter. He contributed with two tackles for loss in the opening frame and finished the game with four tackles. Polk almost pulled in an interception"

  26. Actually it would give MWC 11 members for football. My guess is that they would make a run for one more team to get conference title game. They would probably want a team from Texas (I've read Boise wants to be in West Division).

  37. He was asked about paying players. Beebe suggested a "stipend" was reasonable...then noted that some ADs may not be able to afford the stipend. Norm asked if Beebe was concerned that this would drive the wedge further between the haves and have-nots...Beebe said that his schools would continue to subsidize (his word) some of the smaller programs (I'm assuming his use of "subsidy" is in reference to what we call "body-bag games") but that the divide between the BCS-schools (again, his word) and non-BCS programs is growing and he (the following is my interpretation) supports increasing that gap. Basically, he was a big-program elitist. So...eff him.

  38. The only FCS team we'll be playing is TSU. The USA game will be a conference game similar to when WKU moved up. I think we'll be fine in both of these games and I actually look forward to NOT being the punching bag for once.

  39. Good to see. Not saying USA is some slouch team that we will roll over (sure hope so) but I'd like to see our team mix more of these games in. I realize this game is scheduled due to their transition but I think we have another FCS game the same season correct? I think its important to mix it in with Alabama and LSU but these games (hopefully) build confidence that will, I believe, improve our performance against the "bigger" universities.

  42. --- All of those bank bailouts occurred in 2008.... before the 2008 election. ---I very much agree with spending cuts.... but not just to programs that were put into place by just the other party which seems to be the big problem. There are two issues to a balanced budget.... more income ( taxes.. I don't want new ones just just SOME of the old ones put back ) and less spending which partly occurred because the unnecessary Iraq war and those insane earmarks really that went crazy. Just don't cut things that should not be cut even if a member of the other party got it passed. --I get tired of hearing those imply the debt problem just occurred after the current guy walked it... it didn't.

  43. Per the constitution, the State MUST balance the budget yearly - there is no debt. ...the "debt" is a result of losses ON PAPER underwriting state-wide and municipal bonds. ...and here is the most important point made in the article "Texas doesn't appear to be overextended. In a May report, Standard & Poor's gave the state an AA+ rating, citing its outperforming economy, strong cash management and constitutional limits on debt." ...so really, it appears the article was written so they could have a nice sensational headline, but really doesn't deliver the shock he headline would lead you to expect to find within. Perry isn't even running yet, and here come the hit-pieces. LOL!

  45. I think it is fine they are happy to be members of the WAC regardless of the fact that it will be filled with the likes of Seattle, Denver, UTA and potentially more schools that don't play football beginning in 2012, and UTSA that has never fielded a team replacing the likes of Fresno State, Hawaii, etc..., but what cracks me up is some of the points they make in justifying staying in the WAC. I had to laugh out loud at the one poster that mentioned they should concentrate on winning the WAC until the Big XII comes calling. Link I didn't mean to put this in the recruiting forum. Admins, please move to where you feel it should be placed.
