  1. As a Maverick Alum, I am really disappointed. I very much doubt that JJ would ever have backed down from this rivalry. Sure, UTA has "owned" UNT 7 of the last 9 times we've played, but I'm old enough to remember the 70s and 80s. From 1973 to 1983 North Texas beat us 8 of 11 games, yet nobody in Arlington even considered giving up on the series. Streaks happen: That's just the way things go with good rivalries. I hope this is just a temporary setback and that the series will be renewed. It's bad enough that TCU and SMU are afraid to play. I never thought UNT was like that. We'll really miss you guys next season at College Park Center. I'm particularly sorry not to see Alzee Williams play again. He, unlike Benford, is a class act.

  2. I know this is not football related but Business Insider named Denton the best small town in America. I suspect all those that live there tend to take this for granted and that's natural, but Denton really is a unique place. Let's hope that with all the development on Fry St and such that the town does not lose any of its "Dentoness" http://www.businessinsider.com/the-ten-best-small-towns-in-america-2012-11#10-tybee-island-georgia-1

  6. Ugh.....just Jerry being Jerry. Trade down which I was ok with in theory, but we didn't get proper value in return. We pass up on SylvestervWilliams and Shairif Floyd who end up going just before our 31st pick. We then pick a center we could've had with our 2nd round pick. I'm glad we addressed the line but...geez. I'd like to see us nab one of these two safeties with our second, Jonathsn Cyprian or Shamarko Thomas. With the two 3rds I'd like a Dtnand another Olinemen, would love to snag Barrett Jones if possible.

  10. Denia folks are trying their hardest to make sure it stays best 'small town' (120k people = small town?) in America. I don't know if you mean good or bad on this. I live there and they drive me crazy. I won't attend their community meetings because they oppose everything. I guess that would be trying to keep it small. They opposed the stadium, the windmills, the dorm at Eagle Point, Acme Brick's operating permit and so many other things, I can't remember. And the proposed convention center? I'm sure. But I absolutely love where I live. It is physically the best place in the world to live. I try to keep as low of a profile as possible so they don;t oppose me.

  11. Reminds me of when Texas Tech decided they would not be playing football with us anymore after we beat them twice.

  12. But didn't UNT used to play only like 2-3 home games and like 7-10 road games in non-conference games as recently as 5-7 years ago or so? I guess every coach has their own scheduling philosophy, but seems like wins would be more important this year than RPI. Maybe UNT is trying to schedule some cupcakes at home because Conference USA is gonna be every bit as tough as Sun Belt.

  13. Way to take a joke and try to make it serious. Here is an idea, why don't you convince her to go to a university that doesn't have an athletics fee, like University of Phoenix or Devry.

  18. While working the Mean Green Club Phone-A-Thon this evening some good news was shared with me. At this point in the year we are over $100,000 ahead of last year's Mean Green Club donations pace AND We are ahead of last year's pace in football season ticket sales as well. For me, this was excellent news. Here's hoping that donations and season ticket sales continue on this pace. Lots of calls made this evening by Mean Green Club volunteer reps and members of the Mean Green coaching staffs. Thanks to all who volunteered their time to help The Mean Green and thanks to all who actually took our calls and committed support for the Mean Green in 2013-2014. It was a positive experience and a good chance to talk with fellow Mean Greener's. On a side note...everyone I contacted pledged support and were very positive in their comments. Really made me proud to be a member of the great Mean Green Nation!

  28. As much as I make smartass comments (see previous posts in this thread) to lighten the mood, I think there's a serious point being missed here. It doesn't matter if they are Islamic extremists or reactionary domestic conservatives; the fact is that pretty much anybody could make these bombs (hence my half-joking dumb statement before about "make go boom"). Whether you're new to this country or born into it, there has to be a sense of responsibility and community developed within all of us. Many take it for granted, but the fact is that there are many people who feel like "outsiders," be it due to immigration or simply their general social status. It doesn't take much to integrate that kind of person into a sub-community where they feel accepted and are willing to go to extremes for the small segment of the population that they feel "understands" them, so this is of course a bigger risk with younger people who have yet to develop a sense of individual responsibility. I don't want this to sound like a bunch of socialized hippie "I'm okay, you're okay" crap, because it isn't. It's about being aware of those around you and the willingness to foster that sense of communal responsibility in others. Befriending, and socializing with, those who may seem a bit unusual or different allows us to maintain the balance between our realization of differences and our actions to ensure that those differences are treated with a modicum of mutual respect and understanding. Without this, there would be no cities, no armies, no government of which to speak. Our desire and need for individuality and unique purpose must not exceed the limits of that which allows us to achieve the proper maintenance of our society as we deem fit as a collective whole. Let's face it. We all have the same level of primary education and a considerable amount of development in higher education. Though most would choose not to even think of it, the fact is that if we so chose, any of us who paid attention through that period could create weapons that would cause far more chaos than those currently being sensationalized. The fact that we do not plan or execute those is a testament to our belief to the commitment to ensure a greater tomorrow, not a worse one. We believe that with time and far more peaceful actions there will be progress to limitless possibilities for what is often termed "the best of our humanity". So yes, I have an incredible amount of disdain for what has been done by these two boys - and I call them boys because, if they were men, they would not have been so easily misled. But I also see it as a reminder that we must remain vigilant in our need to inspire that sense of community, that idea that each of us - as well as humanity as a whole - can be better in spite of what has been laid out before us by those less enlightened and those without a belief in better days to come. To do any less would truly, as some have said and others have joked, "let the terrorists win." There would be no terror if those attempting to inspire it believed that the best things in life were still out there, waiting, on the horizon.

  31. News of the awarding of the four team playoff with the mythical national championship being played in Jerry's World really is a good fit. The affluent of college football have their little four team gentlemen's club each year while they line their coffers with a trumped up " playoff" of their anointed four. Finally they send their final " playoff" game to JJ so he can rake in his share of the bamboozle. Anything less than the NCAA basketball model is not a playoff and only designed to see that the wealthy get more $$$$. A 16 team playoff with all conference champions being first included is a true playoff. This will never happen because a Wichita State might some how slip through if that were the case. This would fowl the punchbowl at the gentlemen's club for sure.

  32. Well, her father never said anything much, he skipped out at birth. Her mom (my niece) won't be able to affort $17 - $20k per year for UNT. and there are going to be a lot more students like this. Things change quickly, UNT could become like the brick and mortar retailers competing with Amazon.

  34. I just find it odd and ridiculous that we've been throwing money around like we have an endless stream of cash and donors with us buying games like the big boys, paying off UTA, practice facility, huge scoreboards/Pit upgrades, bridge, absurd amount of TV marketing, yet we play the "We're poor" card quite often.

  37. Of course you will. I mean, you are perfectly ok with losing, after all. I wonder, will you try to get her out of other fees that she won't use? Or just athletics? Gotta keep UNT as the cheapest school around. Green Light to Cheapness is our motto, right? Guess what, students who don't want to pay the fee don't have to come here. Your thought process is one of the many things wrong with UNTs culture.

  39. No. It means they didn't go out of their way to modify the agreement that we decided to break.

  40. Here we go. See? Now the anus is on UTA to agree to move the game. Sounds like Rick & co. are willing to keep the game and sacrifice a balanced schedule to keep the series alive.

  41. Riley has great name recognition in this state. As bad as his dad was as a college coach, he was that good as the coach at Southlake Carroll. Their family name in Austin is golden, from both sides of his family. Plus, he is a very classy guy in the way he carries himself, at least from my vantage point. Great guy--should be a good fit for UT. His time here was awful, but it wasn't his fault. His dad's gameplan was a disaster, which included putting his undersized kid at QB here. Hell, he was undersized for FCS play. It wasn't his fault that Vizza quit--it was Vizza's fault and his dad's fault. But the fact remians that Vizza wasn't going to survive here, either. Our gameplan was built on the spread and the OLine here was just a sieve. Thus, we saw Vizza, Rodge, Nathen Tune, and Derek Thompson get crushed in the course of 2+ seasons. It wouldn't surprise me to see Rodge be a very successful coach, at any level. He'll be smart enough to learn from his dad's mistakes. He showed a lot of heart and fight for such a little QB. And the class he showed after his dad was fired midseason and still played hard for Chico and his teammates that season told me a lot about his character.

  45. No offense, but I think it really might be only you who cares. Recruiting rankings are fun and all, and they're meaningful at the top where you have the 100 or so "elites". After that, everyone can play basketball and it is all about finding diamonds in the rough. Take soon-to-be rookie of the year Damian Lillard's case for example. 2 star prospect according to Rivals, best school to offer him was Wichita State, ended up at Weber State. 4 years later, the kid is a lottery pick, and going to be rookie of the year. Those rankings meant nothing. Oh, and what of Wichita State? They couldn't recruit Lillard over measly Weber State...surely they must be awful and still feeling the repercussions a few years later...oh crap, that's right, they went to the final four this year. My mistake. Looks like the schools that you beat out or lose out against in recruiting don't mean anything either. Seriously, you just sound like a whiny little girl. Get over it, you hate Benford. We all f'ing hate Benford...95% of us on this board would rather see the team coached by a TAMS student than Benford. But you don't see the rest of us making something out of nothing.
