Former AD Steve Sloan passed away

Recommended Posts

Steve Sloan dies at 79: Ex-Ole Miss coach won two national titles as player under 'Bear' Bryant at Alabama - CBSSports.com

Not sure why our alma mater wasn't listed, but he was the AD for my first few years here in Denton while I was a student. Even got to do an interview with him for a communications class when I was a sophomore. He admitted to me that day in his office that the administration just didn't support sports enough to compete with the schools in the SWC back then and that it was really frustrating.

He was AD at North Texas from 1990-92.  He took over as AD from Corky Nelson.  I think he may have been our first AD without also being Head Coach of football too?

Forgot he was a backup to Joe Namath at Bama, then won a National Championship of his own as QB.

Nice photos of his career here...

As I recall, UCF was an unknown commodity.  Some of us wondered why Sloan would leave NT for UCF (who ?)  I recall giving him a can of Virginia Diner peanuts (yum) as an inducement to stay.  Didn’t work.  Sorry to hear of his passing.
