Mean Green Crushes Southern And Texas Tech

 

The Mean Green concluded their weekend with two, dominating run-rule wins on Sunday against Southern and Texas Tech.

Lubbock, Texas— UNT softball concluded their weekend with two, dominating run-rule wins on Sunday against Southern and Texas Tech. For the second day in a row, North Texas crushed Southern 24-7 and followed that performance up with an overwhelming 11-3 win against Texas Tech.
 
After these two wins on Sunday, the Mean Green finished with a 4-1 record on the weekend. North Texas is now 11-3 on the season and will host their first game at Lovelace Stadium this Wednesday against Texas.

Game 1 Recap – UNT 24, Southern 7
 
Once again North Texas sprinted out to a fast start on offense against Southern. UNT scored three runs in the first inning and scored at least three runs in all five innings. 
 
Kalei Christensen started the scoring with a solo blast to right field to take a 1-0 advantage. Two batters later, Kailey Gamble singled through right side. Molly Rainey followed with a homer to right center, extending the lead to 3-0.
 
The scoring didn't stop there as Cierra Simon picked up an RBI by bringing Mikayla Smith home. Tayla Evans later tripled to left center to bring two more runners home and extend the lead to 6-0.
 
In the top of the third inning, the Mean Green continued to put runs on the board. The Mean Green were able to add four runs due to a passed ball, error, double and wild pitch before Gamble homered to right center to make the score 13-0.

The Mean Green continued to capitalize on the Lady Jaguars mistakes and scored four more runs in the fourth inning before the Lady Jaguars tacked on seven runs with five hits to cut the deficit to 17-7.
 
The Mean Green then responded again in the final inning as Emma Grahmann doubled to right center to drive in three runs and increase the lead to 20-7. Amarys Miller-Godsey made her first appearance of the season and tripled to left field to score three more runs and make it 23-7. Shelby McHughes would bring in the last run of the game on a single to right field.
 
Skylar Savage (3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K) recorded her third win of the season and pitched three hitless innings against Southern before Karsyn Iltis relieved her in the fourth. Ashley Peters finished the game for the Mean Green and finished with three strikeouts.
 
Alissa Castaneda led Southern, going 1-for-3 with one hit, one run and two RBI.
 
The Mean Green set a new school records for runs scored in a game (24) and most RBI in a game (19) while also scoring the most runs against a Division I team this season and the second most runs against all colleges.
 
UNT was led by Gamble and Cobb who both finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Gamble added three RBI while Cobb added two, to the 19 total RBI that North Texas recorded.
 
 
Game 2 Recap – UNT 11, Texas Tech 3
 
In the last game of the weekend, North Texas scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings once again. Lexi Cobb led the offensive surge in the first inning with a home run to right center on the third pitch. 

Molly Rainey came to the plate three batters later and homered to right center to extend the lead to 4-0.
 
Texas Tech responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second before Peters ended the inning with a strikeout.
 
In the second inning, UNT added two more hits including an RBI single to drive Ashlyn Walker home. Christensen would follow with a RBI groundout to bring Grahmann home and extend the lead to 6-2.
 
The offense wasn't done yet though as Simon would single in the top of the third and Walker would hit another Mean Green home run to make the lead 8-2.
 
Texas Tech would add one run in the bottom of the third before both teams would go scoreless for two innings.
 
But the scoring would resume in the top of the sixth inning when Cobb led off with yet another homer, this time to right field to make it 9-3. Evans would single later in the inning before Gamble hit her second home run of the day, and first against Texas Tech, to extend the lead to 11-3.
 
Peters (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 4 K) picked up her sixth win of the season. Savage (2.0 IP) relieved her in the fifth inning and didn't surrender a hit.
 
Payton Jackson led Texas Tech with a 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate with two runs.
 
Cobb led the Mean Green with a 3-for-3 afternoon with two home runs and three RBI.
