^What he said^ See Riley Dodge.

And Riley played Texas big school high school football at Southlake Carroll.

I do think Mason is bigger than Dodge, who was 5'8" (I stood next to him, don't doubt), but he needs a year to adjust.

Here is that last true freshman qb we had worth a dang.

He took such a pounding that he gave up football. Well that and he enjoyed his recreation time.

Yes, but you also have an affinity for saying people are shorter than they are. But I guess if you stood next to them and we didn't then you're height approximation is right and irrefutable.

UNT90 standing next to someone is the official measure for height at GMG.com.

I get it that Mason Fine played small time ball in Oklahoma, but he has something Riley didn't have.........the ability to hit a receiver 60 yards down field.

Check out his senior highlights.  It takes an arm to hit a receiver a few yards deep in the end zone while straddling your own 45 yard line.

How many high school QBs have that much of an arm and run a 4.52 40?  Another inch or two and he wouldn't be here.

He should red shirt, but he probably plays this year.

I know you guys are home team fans, but Mason is going from a low division Oklahoma high school team to FBS football. The game speed is going to be dizzying to him for a while. Plus, he needs to put on some muscle to hold up to hits from 300 pound linemen. A redshirt year is best for both him and UNT.

That said, nothing would make UNT fans happier than to have a productive true freshman at QB.

Someone should have told that to Jeffry Wilson (played 1-A ball) before he arrived here and played as a true freshman.

Running back ain't QB. And if he were a more physically developed QB, this would be a valid point. He will benefit greatly from a year in a college conditioning program and feed bag program.

Fine is a very good player. Even has a little bit of Manziel to his game when he scrambles. He will benefit from coming from an Air raid in high school, but a Seth Littrell air raid will be different from a Leach air raid, Gundy, Holgorsen etc. It will take time to get used to the nuances of Littrell's system, and adding 10-15 lbs definitely would help absorb some of the blows he will inevitably take.

Exactly. And athleticism. Plus, making people miss is a lot easier than dissecting a defense as a true freshman.

The issue brought up was "the speed of the game". And if you come from a 2-A program you haven't regularly faced anything close to D-1 speed. My point is that Wilson quickly adjusted to the speed of the game........perhaps Fine can too.

"Speed of the game" has to do more with reading a secondary that's immensely faster than what you faced in high school, while having less time to throw than you did in high school. Or facing defensive linemen who are 100 lbs bigger than what you faced in high school, yet get off the ball faster than you.

Running backs can lean on their instincts and athleticism a lot more. That's why it's traditionally a position where young players see the field and have success earlier than others, at all levels. So running backs playing and adjusting early is not a good comparison to QBs early.

Perhaps!  Guess we'll just have to see in the fall.

I just hope that he doesn't have to make that adjustment this year at 170 pounds, since high speed collisions with very fast 240 pound linebackers are inevitable. Not to mention fast DE's who outweigh him by 50% or more. Sure there are some cat quick receivers, corners, and return specialists who can make it at that size, but it's not a great idea IMO for a position that has a target on his back on nearly every play. Hopefully he has a year and a half to grow into this level.

......just like we do every fall with all the new people on the roster........including those from 4/5-A programs who "down the corridor of years" have been just as baffled/surprised by the "speed" and complexity of the game as any 2/3-A player.

I took a little time to look up some numbers about Locust Grove HS. It's enrollment is/was 468, which would make it a 3-A (division 1) school in Texas.

I noticed in an article from the Tulsa World that OU came in at the last minute and offer Mr. Fine a PWO.

And then I happened to see the state championship brackets and results for 3-A football in Oklahoma last year. Locust Grove made it to the third round where they were shut out 64-0. Hmmm.  The team that shut them out was eventually beaten rather soundly by the eventual state champion Heritage Hall . A private school in OKC. It's also where Quinn Shanbour played HS ball.

Read a article about that game. Pouring rain and about 33 degrees. Fine couldn't feel his hands. Not optimal weather conditions for a passing offense.

Riley Dodge was the 2007 Texas Gatorade player of the year. He was also a PARADE All-American and a 2 time 5A(before there was a 6A) All State team member.

I'd say those accolades are more impressive than 2 time OK player of the year. Kyler Murray and Johnathan Gray were both 2-time Gatorade POY winners in Texas and the P5 schools noticed.

A lot of good that did us.
