  1. This has nothing to do with North Texas, but I spent so much time putting this effing thing together last night in just going to show it off

  3. One thing I like about bowls is lead time. Now I missed the Camellia because I'd booked three nights at the lodge at Mt Magazine State Park (it's awesome, every room has a balcony overlooking the valley) so wife and I didn't get home until Thursday, game was Saturday. Just didn't have the energy to drive 6 1/2 hours. But it beat the playoff days in I-AA when you found out Sunday where you were on Saturday from a fan standpoint. Writer for the Athletic had a nice piece talking about how the "throwaway" G5 bowls are better than the P5 also ran games because so many in the P5 are conditioned to think season is failure without a playoff or NY6 bid.

  4. Not much love for free market capitalism here. The NCAA used to keep the number of bowl games under a tight cap and it wasn't unusual for some teams with a lot of wins to miss out. 1975 11-0 Arkansas State, as well as runner up 8-2 La Tech. MVC Champ 7-4 Tulsa, MAC had champ in bowl but not 9-2 Ball State, 8-2-1 Central Michigan, and 8-3 Bowling Green. The PCAC (Big West) had champ SJSU out at 9-2, nor Long Beach at 9-2, nor 8-3 SDSU. in the Pac-8 8-3 and ranked Cal missed a bowl but 7-4 USC made one. 8-3 ECU and App State in the Southern missed bowls. 9-2 Arizona missed a bowl game. 9-2 Rutgers, 8-3 Notre Dame, and 8-3 Virginia Tech left out. Imagine what happened in recruiting afterward, left out of a bowl then you bump up against a 7 win South Carolina, NC State or USC that made a bowl. No shot at winning what was already a tough recruiting battle. Go up against a school that was in a league with a bowl tie and you didn't have one? Good luck again. Fast forward to 1985. Left out was 8-2-1 Miami (OH) and 8-4 Utah (played at Hawaii). Few extra bowls helped out. 1995 Well Miami (OH) misses at 8-2-1 despite beating Big Ten champion Northwestern on the road. No one else with 8 misses but it didn't hurt that Alabama and Miami (FL) were under bowl bans. People interested in hosting bowl games had finally said the magic words. Antitrust violation and the NCAA rolled over. In my perfect world, bowl eligibility comes down to this. No team with 6 wins can be invited until every team with 7 or more is placed and no team with less than six until every team with 6 or more is placed. After that let the markets determine if we have too many bowl games. Haven't been many games fold in recent years. I do expect some to close up thanks to the playoff but if someone is willing to pay to show the game who really cares? If you have an antenna you've seen some of the junk channels like Grit and Cozi that sometimes show up in the basic satellite, cable, streaming packages. They run long annoying ads for stuff you'd probably never buy but someone obviously does buy or the commercials would go away. I'll watch 5th place CUSA vs 6th place MAC if I'm in the mood to watch football and that's the best game available.

  8. Close out the OOC slate with one last tune-up game. Should be a good opportunity to work on some things.

  9. I’m watching the game. What cheapens this Bowl game is they didn’t paint anything in either end zone referencing withe the bowl or the teams playing. End zones still have the smut mustang name. IMO, this cheapens the bowl, makes it seem….dirty, unclean.

  10. WSU basically in the MWC? Do they get to compete for a championship? We should be able to compete against these guys.

  11. I opened that same stupid table track thinking it would take 15-20 minutes to put together and walked away more angry about it (and the blister on my thumb from the stupid tacks) than the bunk beds we put together next. I hope you poured a good drink after because we sure did.

  12. I say Memphis State because I grew up with it being Memphis State. Never understood the passion to drop state off a name, in my experience I think it adds flair. I understand wanting to change SW Texas State to Texas State. One time in a shop in Little Rock was looking at all the sports stuff, clerk asked if he could help. Said I'm looking for something more than just Arkansas. Oh like what? Arkansas State. Three schools were on our hate list. Memphis State, Loser Tech, and SW Louisiana. Utterly indifferent to La Tech now but I might just take a 2-10 season if the wins were over Louisiana and Memphis. I'd call em West Tennessee Teachers but too long to be fun.

  15. I find the complaints weird too. There should be as many bowls as there are cities and committees that want to run them and fans who want to go to them. Is a 6-6 team playing another 6-6 team in Shreveport going to be remembered forevermore? Probably not. But it's still a chance for two teams to mark a season with a celebratory trip to a bowl with everything that goes along with it, like a banquet where they get to put on ties, hear some speeches and eat chicken, mashed potatoes and chocolate pudding. If there was a vote for more college football or less, I am voting more.

  19. It's going to be harder and harder for programs like ours (and the rest of the G5 for that matter) to survive on the football side of things. In this age, our path to success will mean hitting on most if not all our transfers. They need to come in as starters or be on the 2-deep with considerable playing time. High school recruiting will need to focus on players ready to play as freshmen. We cannot sustain the expense of developing players in a large redshirt season class year after year.

  20. Our biggest weakness is lack of a big man that can score. I love what Sissoko did last year stepping in for Abu, but he's better with limited minutes. Allen works hard but is an offensive mess.

  21. Fifth home game last season was against FAU on 12/29 with 3,808 in attendance. We closed out 2022 with 2,934 on 12/31 against FIU. This year it will be LSU Shreveport on 12/30. Will we eclipse the FIU total?

  22. I will be surprised if the expanded playoff slows down the rate of players who sit out for the NFL Draft. So many athletes are skipping bowls for the draft or the portal that a lot of bowls feel like the start of the next season instead of the end to this one. FSU isn't the team that went undefeated any more with five stars skipping the Orange Bowl and even QB Tate Rodemaker hitting the portal instead of playing.

  25. You are comparing him to the entire country. He isn't Luka. I am not saying he is the best PG in the country, I am saying he is the one facilitating the offense. Also, assists mean jack if the player you pass to doesnt make their shot, which I have seen waaay more than not on this team. There are also things he does that don't show up on the stat sheet. Since you played the game, you should know that of all people. He has to be a little bit between a shooting PG and a "true PG" since we don't really have anyone else that can do that.

  28. It's cool that some fans travel to games but the overall fanbase contains a lot more people who don't have the time or opportunity so they watch those games on TV. I don't think the Mean Green would benefit from being on TV less. There would be some benefit to home game attendance but it would significantly drop the number of alumni who follow the team. One of the biggest problems with CUSA was the low-quality TV production that made games look small time.

  29. Why is it more special to not be able to see your team's games every week? Rare is for steak and Pokemon cards, not sporting events. Being able to see every Mean Green game in Florida is glorious.

  30. College football used to be special. TV was for Big or Special games. I have some of NT's early TV games on VHS tapes, because they were so rare. Now every game is broadcast live, either TV or streaming. Bowl games used to be Special. Now, even teams with losing records can go to Bowl games to fill open spots. Media and $$ are now controlling the games, the conference invites, the team rosters, everything.....not the schools.

  32. I will respectfully disagree. We ran the entire game, just way out of sorts. Altitude of Bozeman = 4,820 The highest altitude town in TX is Fort Davis at 5,050 feet. I have spent time there and never really had any issues, so D1 athletes should be fine. Heck, Amarillo is at 3,662 and nobody has an issue. We are conditioned enough and deep enough to handle the altitude of Bozeman.

  35. SMU is the rich kid nobody likes. They threw so much money at it that their new “friends” just couldn’t say no. They act like they like them to their face but talk about them behind their back. They are just the annoying kid who did nothing to earn their spot so Daddy bought it for them.

  36. Hahaha, good one. What do you define as a "true PG"? If it's assists, which is the key stat you can measure for a facilitating player, you might want to check stats before you make assine statements.

  37. Yeah we are definitely going to be a 2 bid conference minimum… just not sure we are getting one of those bids. Memphis and FAU look like bonafide top 25 teams if not top 10. It’ll be fun to see how we stack up against elite teams, hope we can click more by then

  38. I tend to ignore the class ranking since class size influences it. We are signing a big class, so lots of points. We only had 14 last year, so fewer points. I prefer to look at average rating of the recruits. At 84.14, we are around 8th in the conference. Hardly overwhelming. For comparison, last year was 84.17. The bottom four guys on the list had no other FBS offers.

  44. 1. Never stated that because I don't know you outside of your postings here. Not sure what you mean by "my kind" but a while back I did inquire as to what you do professionally and you didn't respond. Well you did, but referred to a bad football movie and your screen name. 2. Good. 3. I will just say I agree with the other responses to that picture. We don't know the entire story. My take? They are probably both in the wrong.
