  4. I was one of those students who really wanted our name to change to TSU. In hindsight I am glad we kept North prominently stated as part of our name. We do not have an identity crisis like I thought we did. Second hindsight revelation. I couldn’t stand the SOW when it first launched. So happy I was proven wrong on both accounts. Love UNT Love our diving Eagle. beat utep GMG

  5. With the proposed unlimited transfer options, the increase in P5 schollys to 95 and the NIL money it is time for the G's TO PULL OUT OF THE NCAA! They need to form their own league with 4-5 conferences, set their own rules, and have a play off system with a national championship. There has not been 1 thing approved that has benefitted a G5 except maybe SMU with the NIL money. I could see a number of schools dropping football and focusing on BB! The next movement we will see is an increase scholarships for BB. P5's are doing all in their power to make sure they never get upset by a G5 program.

  6. FBS conferences now are being formed by Football value of a school. But those school's all have other sports, and they get dragged along into the new conference also. You are proposing breaking away from playing a Baylor-type program in football, but what about in basketball, softball, or soccer, etc? Some of the biggest games fans and players look forward to is against the best programs = P5. FCS schools love to play FBS programs. Likewise, while we hate the rules benefiting the top end, G5's love to play and beat the P5's.

  7. Monday's game should be really fun to watch, especially since we beat them last December in Wichita 62-52. The Shockers loss to the Mean Green was just one of three non conference loses out of the last ten Non conference games played.

  9. No they are monopolizing revenue. This problem has been growing since the end of CFA. When league members aren’t sharing media money equally the product suffers. I think the biggest gripe is that in addition to not sharing revenue is that P5 generally don’t go to G5 yards to play. For instance let say the PAC 12 had required maintain 2 for 1 or home and home series with a G5 opponents in the CST or eastern time zones. A decade of games of PAC 12 teams playing in DFW, Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans, Tulsa, and Miami would have grown the PAC 12 brand and grew programs like SMU, Houston, Rice, UTSA, Tulane, and ours. Then the blow of losing UCLA and USC could have been softened a little. Then maybe Houston tells the Big 12 no in favor of going to the PAC 12. If they wanted to improve Pac 12 network subscription numbers they need a reason for Major market fans in the CST time zone to watch, and you can’t schedule UT, Nebraska & OU every year.

  10. BREAKING NEWS: SMU is being accused of paying writers to make up stories about P5 conference interest just to keep there name out there. More to come…

  11. [But it does make for interesting fodder. And consider this: UCLA must travel to Big Ten territory where California law has banned state money being spent for travel and lodging in 22 states, three of which are in the Big Ten — Ohio, Indiana and Iowa.] Very interesting indeed. This maybe be a disaster for UCLA athletics and really make both LA school’s addition to the Big 10 look more ridiculous than it already does.

  12. Not expecting a lot of this to last. Conferences will eventually have their own rules. Either separately or together.

  13. Please just go ahead and split off at the high levels. This is ruining College football. These teams are no longer anything but professional squads. Time to reset and move on.

  14. Two things: 1) It’s not “time to time”, there are literally 5 different threads about SMU “talking to” a conference or “pressuring” a conference to let them join. 2) There is ZERO actual evidence that they are going anywhere. When we joined the AAC, one of their posters was over here telling us they wouldn’t be in the league long and to wait for an announcement. This is a live picture of those who decided to wait for it… I have “talked to” a lot of hot women in my life. Stand by for me and Charlize Theron’s wedding invites.

  15. I agree and they will lose a ton of fans not heavily invested in the blue blood programs. And it will be even worse if after the pair down P5 and they go to a 8 team or more playoff. If all the big brand schools are virtually guaranteed a playoff slot by a preseason ranking in the top ten, it diminishes the importance of the regular season. They are following the path of MLB baseball before their luxury tax/cap system. And MLB still hasn't recovered from that short sighted "you teams financial success comes at the expense of my team's financial success" mindset. This is also similar to the rise alternative world boxing sanactioning organizations watering down what it means to be champion and limiting matches between top fighters. In boxing it is understand because it is an individual sport with brands that are the fighters themselves. The greed is making them make horrible decisions for the long term appeal of CFB that is dependent on its diversity of schools competing. Except in the most rural states in the nation every citizen has a FBS level program to root for that is in reasonable one day event driving distance. I think very few people in major markets are watching mediocre blue blood teams religiously. Especially when they get to the point where a conference title or playoff birth are not attainable. That is when I hear Saban I want to vomit and curse the radio and TV. If all the blue bloods played one game a year in a G5's stadium the financials wouldn't be so dire for many G5 programs. All 130 FBS schools would make more money long term. And millions of alumni never exposed to college football today might have from a blue blood visiting their school while they were students.

  17. I do think the NCAA is going away, as far as football at least. I have seen references to P5's setting up their own Administration to oversee their leagues. It will probably morph into the 1-A and 1-AA thing again.

  18. I truly don't care if we ever play another P5 program again in any sport. They only use those games now to get a look at our best players and see how they match up or fit in their programs. Playing them only helps them pick the best players off our roster. I won't be upset the day the P5 do what they want and actually break away from the NCAA and become a minor league system for the NFL and NBA. I won't surprise me either when the requirement to attend class is lifted and getting a degree while playing becomes optional at the P5 level. It is coming.

  28. This “life decision” should be for four years. These kids are being taught that commitment means nothing, if I am upset I should just move along and doesn’t teach them a thing about working through adversity. I see them now carrying this into the work place where they arrive thinking they are owed something and not willing to put in time and work their way up

  29. It doesn’t matter if reality steps in. If the G5 presidents continue to stay attached to the P5 model, they’ll only get scraps. The problem is there are numerous G5 programs who hope to make the jump and would never distance themselves from P5. I don’t know how this plays out but there’s zero scenario that it ends up with some version of a level playing field. The G5s are basically the titanic and knowing the iceberg is out there. Instead of having faith in their product and fan bases, it’s full steam ahead toward the iceberg. I get it, getting everyone on board would be tough, but not doing anything seems dumb.

  30. Several of the p5s are already talking about changing the rule to go up to at least 95 scholarships. If you take this across the P5 and even 40 of the schools decide they can do that you're talking another 400 players taken off the board. For everyone that keeps thinking that G5 is in the same division as P5 at some point the reality has to step in.

  33. From what I remember, and explanations vary to the extremes on which side is reporting, it's stated goal was to make it easier to fire certain Federal Employees. The Left says it is terrible because it allows you to get rid of employees for no reason, while the Right says it allows you to get rid of poor performers who are currently very hard to fire.

  38. Here is a pretty good summary. While University Day 1988 was a festive event, it was intended “to be a joyous, but not frivolous, occasion,” as achieving the new name was much more difficult than anticipated. After having changed names several times throughout its history, in 1961 the institution first attempted to legally change its name from North Texas State College to the University of North Texas; however, while the bill, introduced by State Representative Joe Ratcliff, easily passed the Texas House, it met opposition in the Senate from Senator Charles Herring of Austin. Senator Herring feared the bill would harm the University of Texas and “said it was ridiculous to think there could be two universities ‘in a little town the size of Denton.’” He called North Texas State College’s attempt to become the University of North Texas a “fraud on the public,” and insisted that the institution “is nothing but a teachers college and that’s what it’s going to be for years to come.” Representative Ratcliff compromised, rather than let the bill die in the Senate, and the name was changed to North Texas State University. A second attempt to change the name to the University of North Texas was made during the 1969-1971 legislative session, however this move was once again challenged by the University of Texas at Austin, and their opposition prevented introduction of this into legislation at that time. Not willing to completely give up on the name change, university officials began discussing the potential change to the University of North Texas once again in the fall of 1986. This bid ultimately met with success, but not before nearly dying twice on the legislative floor. Neither near-failure had anything at all to do with the merits of the bill itself, but both were purely due to political games. The first near casualty came from Representative Wilhelmina Delco of Austin, who delayed passing the bill through the Higher Education Committee in favor of her own bill. The bill finally passed out of the House committee only three days before the end of the legislative session. The second challenge for the bill came from Representative Jim Rudd of Brownfield, who, in retaliation for an unrelated slight, placed objection to five of Senator Glasgow’s bills, including that of North Texas State University’s name change. Some quick work from members of the Calendars Committee got the bill moved to a higher priority, and the House approved the change from North Texas State University to the University of North Texas. Govenor Bill Clements signed the bill without any further drama, officially changing the school’s name to the University of North Texas, effective May 15, 1988.

  39. I have no idea who’s breaking the rules anymore. What I do know is that the players shouldn’t be restricted because the NCAA and their membership schools can’t follow the rules.

  40. Let me preface what I’m about to say with: Coaches who cheat and break the rules should be punished severely. I don’t really have an issue with unlimited transfers. I think players should have the ability to come and go as they deem best for their own personal life, whether I or anyone else thinks it’s what’s best for them. It’s no different to me than when I hire someone at work, invest time and money into them to help make them a better employee, and they choose to move on. That’s really just kind of how the world works. Even their coaches benefit from that kind of freedom. It’s interesting that we tend to expect multi-year commitments from athletes yet they only receive annual scholarships.
