  1. It appears to me that UTEP is throwing a bit of a temper tantrum. They don't get that the optics are bad. Canceling is a smart move. Being from EP I would accept a free trip up here any day of the week. They also could have contacted recruits to attend. As a parent, I would think being unprofessional and upset about a game cancelation (and its just a game) over the safety concerns would steer me away from UTEP if my kid was a recruit. (But then again I wouldn't let my kids go to UTEP anyway.) Anyway, their coach needs to chill out and grow up.

  3. UNT will be selling GA tickets through their website, you'll be joining me on the wing in the end zone! Fair warning, all games I have attended someone has come and sit within close proximity of me and my group so I have ended up moving back from the front rows to the mid-rear section, but the view is still great and its a good time. Just be prepared for stairs. LA Tech tickets go on sale 11/2, Rice tickets on 11/16. https://meangreensports.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetGroupList?groupCode=GS&linkID=unt-athletics&shopperContext=&caller=appList&appCode=

  4. I gotta think Guyton's performance in SD so far can only help the perception of Darden & NT receivers in the eyes of scouts. Of course, JD's numbers are creating their own perception.

  7. Despite El Paso's current Covid 19 pandemic spike, with overwhelmed county hospitals unable to accept injured players, UTEP refused to consider relocating Saturday's game to an alternate location. El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego has proclaimed a county wide lockdown and that UTEP would not be able to host the game because athletic and entertainment events are not categorized as essential businesses. Simply put, the Sun Bowl in El Paso would not be able to host the North Texas - UTEP football game. Not being able to play a game at a specified site is not a new situation for this football series. UTEP, then called Texas Western, was scheduled to be the first guest team at North Texas' opening of their new Eagle Stadium on September 20, 1952. North Texas couldn't host the game at the new stadium because the new field's natural turf was not ready due to a recent heat wave, and requested the game be moved to the older but smaller stadium on campus, to a different metroplex location, or postponed to a date later that season. UTEP wouldn't consider postponement, insisted that the game be moved to El Paso's Kidd Field, and finally compromised with the game being played at a midway neutral site in Odessa, Texas. Now, though no fault of their own, UTEP cannot host the current game in this series. Shouldn't UTEP have to play by the same rules that they themselves created, to only play at the opponents stadium or at a neutral site. And if they decide not to, UTEP should be forced to forfeit the game. https://kvia.com/coronavirus/2020/10/29/el-paso-county-judge-considers-more-restrictions-possible-shutdown-due-to-virus-surge/

  8. We should probably just not get worked up about anything that happens this season.

  9. No, let the schools work it out. It was a no brainer no to go to El Paso. Virus will probably be around thru 2021 so schools who want to play football need to learn to compromise .

  11. Embassy regulations require us to stay away from infectious situations. I can’t go to an indoor restaurant, hotel, large meeting, or any other risky proposition so I have been well protected. Thank you for asking btw. The political situation is fluid and no one can predict what will happen. It could become less democratic but we hope not.

  12. luckily some guy named Wes Welker opened up the door for short shifty receivers to succeed and actually be sought after. Darden is that, AND he has straight line speed to go with it

  13. I agree statistically we could have done better. I’m not convinced that any president, past or future would have done substantially better because of the uniqueness of our nation but it is possible. If we had ratios similar to the two best performing major countries in Europe and North America, we would have mimicked Germany and Canada. If we were Germany, we’d have 1.97 million cases and 41.1k deaths but we would have conducted 54.7 million fewer COVID tests. If we were Canada, we’d have 2 million cases and 88.2k deaths but would have also conducted 55.8 million fewer COVID tests. To put into perspective how laughable China’s statistics are, if we were China, we would have less than 20k cases and less than 1k deaths nation-freaking-wide while conducting 104.4 million fewer COVID tests.

  15. Exactly. And if Denton were in the same position El Paso is in and we rejected that offer, I would be mad at us rejecting a game when our subsequent weeks are likely in jeopardy as well. Would much rather play the game away than hope that’s the only game the rest of the season for either team that gets cancelled for us to both make it up.

  18. It's almost like they (UTEP personnel) don't understand what's going on in their own town & why NT would be apprehensive about travelling there with over 100 people.

  20. If Dimel could get UNT to forfeit, getting a UTEP win out of it, that could get him to winning more than 3 games for the first time since 1999, a considerable achievement for him, but not one to ever get him hired at Houston again.

  21. Yeah I think all CUSA receivers are good benchmarks to compare with. Henderson was a couple inches taller, but it’s close. Darden keeps up the production and puts up Henderson-like combine numbers he’ll be in good shape. I think with Guyton it was hard to justify drafting a CUSA receiver who didn’t have a 1,000 yard receiving season. But had they pulled the trigger there, that’s a decision that would have paid off.

  22. I think a good benchmark to look at for Jaelon is Richie James from MTSU a few years ago. James had similar ridiculous production at the CUSA level (1,300 yards as a freshman and 1,600 as a sophomore), he measured at 5’10”, and he ran a 4.48 at the combine. He was drafted in the 7th round. James was coming off a season where his injuries prevented him from equaling his previous production, so Darden’s stock should be higher, but I think he has to at least run under 4.5 or else he’s likely an UDFA. Get below that 4.48 that James got and he should be in good shape.

  24. The conference cannot make any school play a game. They can punish a school for not playing, but that is certainly not going to happen. What the conference should do is sanction UTEP for their leadership's stupid comments.

  25. I was at that game. Definitely one of my favorite North Texas away games. I remember it was a cold evening in Logan and it was Utah State's homecoming. Pretty large crowd. After that T.J. Covington 110-yard fumble return you could hear in a pin drop in that stadium. The only noise came from me and the other 10 North Texas fans there. That was also back when you had to have a "sponsor" to buy alcohol in Utah bars. At that time there were about 2 bars in all of Logan and you had to be "sponsored" by a local citizen to drink. Luckily my buddy and I met one of the cameramen from the Utah State athletics department, and he obligingly showed the out of towners a good time. At the bar we had to fill out applications and the sponsor had to verify that he knew us. That was one of the strangest laws I had ever come across.

  26. I don't blame UTEP for not moving. I blame UTEP for acting like UNT is wrong for putting health and safety first. one of the differences here is I don't believe there is anyway UNT would attempt to have a football game (fans or no fans) in the midst of a county wide stay at home order with no hospital beds available, the convention center two blocks away being turned into a makeshift hospital by the governor, etc. That being said, UTEP doesn't have to move the game but my guess is they'll see more of this if their numbers don't change.

  27. Fans can feel how they want. We see that here in this thread. However, I certainly wouldn't expect Smatresk or Littrell to make fools out of themselves in the media.

  28. Per Football Scoop and the younger Barnett we were in contact with UTEP and CUSA in an effort to make this a mutual decision & they refused. We offered to foot the bill for them to play here and they refused. Then they put out a PR blasting us, their President blasted us and then Dimel said we should forfeit. Their response has been ridiculous and I am embarrassed for them. I very much forward to playing them in December or next year and showing absolutely no mercy.

  33. I hadn’t seen this. Thank you for sharing it. I am a bit skeptical of how the writer is so knowledgeable of the most inner-workings of one of the world’s largest banks but I appreciate you sharing the information all the same. I hope you can understand my pause. Sometimes speculation is run as fact these days like if I went on the news and said an anonymous member of Governor’s staff said he hates puppies. There is no way to debunk the claim unless every person who ever worked for him went on record and said to their knowledge he didn’t hate puppies.

  34. I would love for North Texas to renovate the Super Pit. I personally like it where it is. They could make it to where the volleyball team plays there too but that a pipe dream since it seems that it is already a hassle to play basketball games there. I would really like some structural renovations not just superficial ones.

  35. From a fan's view point, I see nothing wrong with the Super Pit. I prefer it over the cookie cutter arenas being built now. UTA and others newer arenas remind me of massive McDonalds. Obviously no NT construction is going to be approved, until it is clear the pandemic is over and not likely to return.

  36. Just not getting it, sorry. The Super Pit is not Basketball Fouts. There's nothing wrong with it, unless being built in the 70's is some sort of structural flaw.

  38. There may be a lot of truth to what you are saying, but I feel like McCasland tries to sprinkle in some morale-boosting moves like this every now and then. It seems to me that he has shown an above average degree of loyalty to his players when compared to your status quo D1 basketball coach. Could he have upgraded the roster by awarding the scholarship to an external recruit? Probably so, but perhaps this is a testament to the fact that he feels comfortable with where the roster currently is and sees more value in proving to his players that hard work will be rewarded, even for those way down the bench. That's my take anyway, but who knows?

  39. He. Voluntarily. Left. Here. To. Go. To. Gonzaga. Because. They. Are. Elite. JFC you are dense. Try opening your eyes for once in your life and considering how other people see the world. Benford destroyed this program and a CBI championship isn’t going to change that perception. I am damn proud of my university. I have two degrees from UNT and worked there as well. I have had season tickets for more than a decade without the ability to attend games because of my government service. I don’t think I (or anyone else) needs to justify their loyalty, but most us understand reality.
