  1. The collective team GPA was over 3.0 last semester which is the highest it's been since 1997. Congratulations and good work to all of the players and coaches. Managing school work and athletics is not easy and raising the GPA bar for the program is a great accomplishment. DMac also said that over 30 coaches have contacted him about the Special Teams position at North Texas. That's a good number - I hope we land a stud. 3. In all my years of watching college football, I can't recall ever watching a more exciting, talented quarterback like Johnny Manziel. The guy is amazing Plus, he's surrounded by some very talented players.

  5. Hey, on a non-related topic--never was, actually--do you know if Bama, LSU, or Florida shared any Tier 3 money with aTm? Surely they did? Right?

  6. Yet schools have shown time and time and time again that that does not matter. The negative perception of being in a league with start ups and sunbelt teams outweighs geography. EVERY TIME. They will be in this new CUSA with one foot out the door for as long as they're in. Im not saying that's the way it should be. I'm saying that's the way it is.

  8. Haha. Riiiight. Because 9 straight seasons of 10+ wins, a National Championship, a couple Conference Champs- all things Aggies couldn't swing in over a decade+ - all just went right out the window after two down years and A&M's first 10+ win season in 14 years? Okay. That's almost as absurd as the Aggies in Houston that call-in to talk radio stations and say things like "We're above the Cotton Bowl, we don't get excited about those sorts of bowls." You know, the year following a 6-6 Meineke Car Care Bowl appearance in the "awful, overrated and mean Big XII". Don't kid yourself: the Aggie little brother mentality is still strong. But hey, all this bravado is stupid. And to think any side is more or less justified in the pillow fights between these two schools is wishful thinking. But it sure makes for good rivalry, doesn't it?

  9. That was very evident. Johnny Manziel did some amazing things when he was running in traffic (peripheral vision +++) but his line gave him the initial openings. Plus, I'd be willing to bet that his official 40 time doesn't come close to matching his "game" speed.

  10. Yeah...it's a good thing Sumlin doesn't coach down here in the Sun Belt. The compeition is so fierce, he'd need four or five years and "his own guys" for sure.

  11. I've taken the position that no matter what happens, no matter how much the entirety of the 120+ teams in FBS conspire to screw UNT, it isn't going to make the ribs any less delicious, the beer any less intoxicating, or the coeds any less, well, I'm getting old, so I'll stop there. I donate money because I was given opportunity at a second education and career that I probably didn't deserve. I come back to Denton because I enjoy an excuse to get together with the friends I made while in school, the friends I made after school at tailgates, and the friends I've yet to make. All this magical musical screw everybody in chasing the dragon...er...ESPN dollar game makes me tired head, and I refuse to play anymore. But the ribs are still delicious, the beer is still intoxicating, the coeds are still, well, I'm getting old. FBS, BCS, Gangbang of five, D1A/D1AA, CUSA, SMU, shopping carts in Safeway, I refuse to care anymore.

  12. Always there. Always at football games. Attend many other events. Short of a team committing a crime, I'll always support. These kids are special. Takes incredible commitment to be a full time student and compete as a D1 athlete. Their efforts and success will grow the university. It's all actually a pretty simple equation.

  13. Craig Thompson A+ He took what was once the best non-AQ TV contract but then became an albatross and got it modified so they can sell more games and make more money and get more exposure. A few weeks ago he was literally in a position where Arkansas State and Louisiana believed they were MWC bound once the Big East pulled two more MWC. In a matter of weeks, he won back Boise State. By most accounts is expected to announce the return of San Diego State and may be relatively close to getting BYU back. When everyone panicked he stayed calm and didn't burn bridges. More importantly he made sure the door stayed open by ignoring those who said that the MWC should just accept reality and go ahead and take NMSU and Idaho. Taking Idaho almost certainly would have closed the door on Boise returning and NMSU wasn't going to advance the cause either. Top notch performance. Karl Benson D Came in acting as if UNT and FIU were gone rather than going through the motions of trying to hold the league together. His quick acting cowboying of running Georgia State in by using a specially empowered committee seriously weakened him after a short time on the job. Adding Texas State and UTA were OK moves but he has learned from the opening mistake. Six weeks out from MTSU and FAU leaving he hasn't tried to ramrod an immediate response. The membership has calmed down and already some schools are actively advocating to allow MTSU and FAU have early departure because they've used the past few weeks to explore schedule options. ASU's AD made no bones about it in a radio interview earlier this week, he's got a game lined up that he wants and he needs them out. That means the panic is gone. Didn't take the bait when pressure was applied by other commissioners to help NMSU and Idaho out of their jam. Brit Bankowsky D- It started as a smart idea. Take one maybe two teams to offset losing four. Get CUSA to 9 or 10 members. One to fill the Texas hole and maybe one to appease the east. It quickly spiraled out of control. Depending on whom you believe, La.Tech and UTSA came into the mix either to help MWC in their gutting of the WAC or to insure that the Sun Belt didn't add two programs that might strengthen the league. Either way it seemed like a decent idea, get back to 12. Except the eastern membership balked. They would block Tech and UTSA unless they were thrown a bone. So they got Charlotte and ODU. Six teams added, one with 8 years of playing an FBS schedule three with zero years experience in FBS. Then the Big East strikes again and CUSA reacts again. Taking an MTSU that is .500 over the past five years and pretty well run program and an FAU that well hasn't hit .500 but at least didn't just fire their coach to hire Ron Turner. Mike Aresco F You can't blame him for losing Louisville and Rutgers or Notre Dame but you can certainly blame him for the loss of the seven basketball schools. It was a classic in speed over thought. Adding ECU made sense but Tulane broke the camel's back. Tulane was sprung on the presidents for a fast vote to keep things quiet. The few football presidents spoke glowingly of Tulane's new financial committment and sterling academic reputation and nice location. The vote passes without the AD's being consulted and the presidents get back home to a firestorm. The AD's and coaches are livid. Yet another school added that hurt the strength of basketball and a school that plays basketball in an 80 year old (but recently modernized) 3,600 seat facility and has had no need to look at adding more seats. With the ever shifting line-up faced the problem of being obligated to find at least one more western school to make the league work, repeatedly rejected by BYU and Air Force approached UNLV, Fresno and New Mexico and the three knew the question to ask thanks to Commissioner Thompson, "What's the latest number from your TV consultants?". Depending on who you believe there is either no number or one that is a fifth of the number used when Boise was first courted. The only thing propping the league up right now is that Houston, SMU, Tulane, Memphis, UCF, and ECU don't see a 20 team C-USA as a viable option and Cincinnati and UConn need some place to get their mail while courting the ACC.

  14. Bored in the offseason? Here are some attendance figures for everyone we have played at least twice home and away over the last 10 years. Last home game has drawn less than 10,000 four times...vs. Ark St (twice), Western Kentucky, and FIU.

  15. Nobody is saying there doesn't need to be more money and donors but the way you're making it sound like it's as if RV's job status should never be in question. If it is all about giving and donating then then I guess we can completely dismiss the importance of an AD's work. Like I've said many times that just because you don't have the most money and resources doesn't give you the automatic excuse of not making the best and right hires given ones situation. And just remember that the money and resources we have now we did not have just a few years back and definitely a didn't have a decade ago when we were able to at least be respectable and win our conference.

  19. Not that I would ever call for McNulty to be the QB (unless he is the best option), but 2011 is a long time ago. I would hope he and others have made progress since then.

  21. If McNulty turns out to be the starter it is pure nepotism and the season is lost before it begins. Go look at the 2011 Tulsa film and tell me that McNulty will ever earn a starting position.

  22. You want a generic job description. The more detail you include, the more likely you may screen someone out that you would be interested in. Say you ask for 5 years experience and then you really have one with four years you would like to consider, you have left yourself open for a possible grievance. These are minimal qualifications. Let the ones whose job depends on the selection to make the decision.

  23. by your reasoning, they finished 1st place (out of 6) in the Big XII South in 2010... I think more accurately, they finished 3rd place (out of 7) in the SEC West behind Alabama and LSU (who has tiebreaker due to the head-to-head 24-19 victory), and with Florida's head to head win and Georgia's SEC East championship, as well as South Carolina's identical league record, I'll stand by my "5th-6th place" assessment. Pretty sure they finished top 3 in the Big XII (out of 12) in that aforementioned 2010 season with wins over both the North and South champ

  27. Over drinks recently we had a similar discussion. An A&M grad was bragging to my friends, who both graduated from Westpoint and are active duty Army, about A&M and his beloved core. My buddies basically called him a tool. The Aggie was so irate when he admitted he was never in the military and they called his beloved core a non Greek fraternity. They also said that wasn't the first of such a moronic discussion with people like that guy who incidentally was hanging around our table uninvited. He threw out the WW2 stat like you did. They laughed. He even threw out the false claim about Patton and his A&M comments, which VMI students claim as well. Millions of Americas served in WW2, not just that school, please stop with the Aggie propaganda. It's an interesting stat but they have nothing on the academies. I guess they feel inferior to Texas and to the service academies too, in the case of the academies, they should. Now, back to football...

  28. Kind of makes sense, since they produced more commissioned officers during WW2 than than the traditional service academies combined.

  29. I believe so. One season is pretty meaningless in the scheme of things. Memories are pretty short. Here at UNT I would be excited for a .500 season at this point. After that I would hope for better and even more excited about a bowl game to go to. Recruiting is a different animal. I don't recall hearing anyone talk about other universities records or hearing any negativity when I was recruited. The coaches and players were generally very positive about the other schools I looked at and were more concerned with selling their school. I specifically remember the coaches from other schools being complimentary of UNT and its staff when I told them I chose UNT. Maybe that isn't the norm? People are talking like the Aggies are a dynasty after one season and folks like Texas are avoiding them. They played last year in College Station, Texas won. ESPN is trying to sell A&M and "Johnny Football" as the second coming of Christ now that they are in the SEC, shocker. A year ago every media outlet spoke about A&M as whipping boys with an over inflated sense of self worth. They will crap on them instantly if they have a shaky start next year. Kind of how everyone is treating Texas these days.

  32. Yep. UNT, and MTSU should have been the only adds. FIU is looking like a train wreck, FAU or FIU is an either/or proposition, at best and really shouldn't have been added at all. La Tech doesn't have the all important market, and all the others have not played one game of FBS football. If CUSA had held tight, not added any programs without FBS experience, and only added UNT and MTSU/La. Tech., they may be in a position right now to lure SMU and Houston back to CUSA. But no, now we have to play a bunch of start ups. Still better than the Belt.

  33. Have y'all forgotten the POS that runs half of our school? Mr. SMU Micromanager himself that has failed at every turn to do HIS JOB of getting our lousy law school off the ground? 35. Typical smart ass answer from you guys. Never said there shouldn't be expectations or disappointment. In fact, my opinion is that expectations have been too low around here for a long time. What you guys don't get is that your opinion on here doesn't mean squat. No positive impact whatsoever. Negative impact on important things like players and recruits. If you want change, express your creative ideas and constructive criticism to those who affect change rather than the piranhas on here. Unless your eyes are closed, the AD and his staff are pretty visible. Try calling the AD with a suggestion. You'd be surprised at how much he'll listen. Oh and by the way, KRAM is right. Sustained success in D1 athletics is directly related to funding. Give more....

  40. Sorry, I don't care to read Houston's website. Mostly because I don't care, however, I do wish them luck as a Texas school, but this is UNTexas' take on what you remind me of : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001860/ Notice there is no cure, it always comes back, and is an irritant to those exposed to it.

  44. We do not normally have the problem answering "where are they located" since it is usually spelled out in the name of the school (see Louisiana Lafeyette, University of Louisiana - Monroe, or any number of the Middle's, Western's, and Southern's) we play. We would sell out TCU and Tech no problem. I would love to see that.
