  1. Officially, the battle doesn’t end for 11 more months, but as of next July 1, the three-way race for the title of worst major-college football conference comes to an end. Congratulations to the WAC on its runaway victory. The Sun Belt? Well, you fought the good fight, but you’re too solid and stable now. 2. “The WAC has been a really good league,” he told the Times. “We had three teams in the Top 25 last year. That pretty much sums up the delusional La Tech position. How embarrassing for them to hold on to, "the teams that have abandoned us were really good" as a bragging point. Man it would suck to be La Tech and know what's coming... Yikes

  3. Bet ya there will still be numerous comments about the "Dodge fiasco" even if we win 9 games this year.

  4. Whatever personal issues that Vito had with Dodge must have run really deep. It's pretty obvious that there is something behind Vito's views on Dodge besides football. I try to just take it for what it is and read Vito for the info on the program, which he works hard to provide. What does worry me is that he will go softer on a coach he likes. He has already rolled the excuses out for a poor performance this year and has stated over and over again aboujt how much time this is going to take. Come on, Mr. Vito, leave the personal issues out of your writing, please.

  5. Hey guys, Im a new poster here on GMG. I have been reading this board for over 4 years now and am a 2009 grad. I recently joined the Alumni Association mainly because I want access to the Pavilion on game days. When do I get an alumni card? Or do I need to call them to mail me one out? Sorry for the dumb questions. Also what else do I need to do to get a little more involved? I am a high school football coach and teacher so it is a little hard for me to be up in Denton ALL weekend long bc we have our stuff going on, but I do catch most home games and tailgate. Thanks for your time...GMG

  6. Basketball recruit Forrest Robinson of Eastland is playing Monday night (7/25) in the THSCA basketball game at Daniel Meyer Coliseum for those of you in the area. FoxSports Southwest is tape delaying the game at 11:00 Monday night also.

  8. I'm not asking for that, but go check the website of the Austin American Statesman or the newspaper from Norman, OK. They write stories about the incoming freshmen from the most recent signing class, news on the return of injured players, articles on players that are projected to step into the starting lineup, etc... There is a lot to write about.

  9. Defensive backs should be a strength this year with seniors McCoy, Hill, Ford, Shorter, Downing and Graham. Next year should be a rebuilding year but they are getting the players in place.

  10. He also beat Gabe Lynn, who is also a DB at OU. You look at that video, see that three or four went to OU, and you realize how big the talent gap is between that UTs, OUs, Bamas, etc. and the non-BCS AQs is. All of those guys are quick and have good hands...and, that was before they got to college. This thing is, it's hard to be down on a kid with that much talent who wants to play but is too far down the depth chart of his fellow 4- and 5-star recruits. He's not bad, it's just that everyone those schools sign is fantastic. Look at the kid who led Tulsa to a 10-3 record and a win at Notre Dame last year - G.J. Kinne. That guy started his career at Texas, but got tired of sitting behind Colt McCoy. The guy may never be a pro, but he's obviously a pretty good college QB. You can't fault guys like Kinne and Trice for moving on. As I've posted before, recruiting is a two way street - and the kids only have five to play four. If thing aren't the way the coaching staff sold to them when they were sitting in your living room during recruiting, I've got no problem with a kid leaving.

  12. I assumed most of this quitter crap is done in jest, no one who ever watched Riley at all could question his courage. He was a Parade All American who chose to forgo a ship at UT to play for his father at NT, that should give you a pretty good feel of his relationship with his father. Once here he did nothing but give his all to the team. I wish he would have stayed at NT but I can certainly understand why he didn't. Some of you seem to forget his effort and his playing hurt for NT after his dad was fired. I hope he is very successful at McNeese and sets all kinds of records but now my focus is all the players and coaching staff that are at NT now.

  13. Not a former player, just an alum. Played HS ball, wasnt good enough so became a coach!!! Love the game of football! One of our kids went to the UNT satellite camp in Round Rock a little while back and he was very impressed with the UNT staff, so I am hoping for big things with this new DEFENSIVE coaching staff. Defense is what will put UNT back on the map. IMO

  14. And I'd argue - although it's a pretty agreeable sort of debate we're having - that our athletic administrators have found several of these people at times, but the larger administration saw no interest in opening their checkbook to get them -- sometimes even for negligible amounts. As for my other point, it really doesn't look like old Howie can produce big pictures results much better than Dickey, no matter how personable he is. Having someone feed you squirrel meat your whole life doesn't mean possum is good just because you try it late and think it tastes better.

  15. In fairness, they also have several writers covering the team. The DR-C has . . . Brett Vito. And to be honest, analysis is not his strength. Today's article on having an experienced HC is an example of what he does well. And he does work--while the "Todd Dodge was terrible/Darrell Dickey was great" ranting gets old, as does his condescending style, he earns his pay.

  17. Good things continue to happen for the Mean Green. Another good thing about this sort of thing is that it tends to bring other good news with it...that is, once these highly rated players start giving UNT a look-see more and more will do the same...much like the men's basketball program at UNT. The good news just keeps getting better and better for UNT these days. GREAT news...keep it coming. The Kickoff Cookout should be great fun indeed. GO MEAN GREEN & WHY NOT NORTH TEXAS INDEED!!!!!

  18. There is no one in the Belt that NT can't beat. Likewise NT could lose to them all, but I think this is going to be a much better year than most are predicting. It is hard to see more than one win in NC but I think that NT will be in the race in the Belt, Most on the outside plus our own sportswriter deluxe see a team with questions at QB, DT and other areas and an awful 6 year record and project 2 or 3 wins. The other side of the argument is that this is a senior laden team with a new coaching staff and outlook and should be able to continue the progress Canales and the team made last year. Back from injuries are Johnson, Leppo, Bynes, Ford, Outlaw, Sashington, Hamilton, Thompson and others. This team played very well in the second half of last year and only was beaten badly by FIU in the conference while starting the fourth string QB. I think the McCarney factor is going to be much greater than most expect. Seven or Eight wins is possible assuming nothing happens like the injury situation last year.

  19. Okie math? He was a freshman in 2009 and a sophomore in 2010, played both years. So, he's got three to play two. Okie math will catch up someday.

  21. Keith had one of the most powerful legs I have ever seen in college football. He had a very tough work out program and demanded a lot of himself. I saw him hit from 72 yards out at Fouts during a practice during the spring camp of 1988. He would always warm up using a No Step approach and consistently hit from 25 yards out while doing this. His performance against tech was probably his greatest, hitting three monster kicks from beyond 48/49 yards out. I wanna say he hit from 48, 51 and 54 yards in that game? He was invited to camp by the Bills the spring after their kicker blew that kick against the Skins in the Super Bowl. But the Bills also required their kicker to have a certain hangtime on the kick offs and cut him in the first spring camp. Overall KC was one of our greatest weapons of all time. Rick

  24. For you guys and gals out of the area, the game will be broadcast LIVE on the web: http://www.foxsportssouthwest.com/07/22/11/Live-webcasts-scheduled-for-THSCA-All-St/landing_cowboys.html?blockID=540600&feedID=3601 5-6 other reasons you might want to tune in: Devonte Abron, Seagoville HS (Arkansas Razorbacks) Listed as 6-8 on your program but is not taller than 6-6. Very good HS player and would have been an impact guy for the Mean Green. Came down to UNT and Arkansas. Felt the overall college experience (football) was better at the SEC school. Will be tough for the 6-6 lefty to hang 4 years in the SEC. A very good transfer candidate in 1-2 years. Jordan Green, Flower Mound HS (Texas A&M) Very good friends with Jordan Williams. Considered joining Jordan after he committed. Would have been the immediate replacement for Tristan Thompson from day one. Expected to contribute at A&M but not as a star. Father is adamant that he stay an Aggie. The 2nd most likely kid to transfer in 2 years if PT doesn't come early. Stated that he committed to the university and not the coach. Curtis "Trey" Davis, Woodrow Wilson HS (George Washington/UMass/Vermont Academy Prep School (Saxtons River, VT) Davis originally signed with George Washington in April but left after the firing of Coach Karl Hobbs. Davis was granted an unconditional release and then signed with UMass. Despite never attending GW, the A-10 committee ruled that Davis had to sit out; after transferring to another school in the same conference. The rule is an A-10 rule and not an NCAA rule, which states a player, if granted a release following the firing of a coach, can sign anywhere. Rather than sitting, Davis and his family decided to utilize the prep school route, making him a reclassified 2012 player. UNT offered early Jalen Jones, Dallas Kimball (SMU) HS teammate of Jordan Williams. Joined a talented SMU class. Best suited to play the four but may have to develop his game to play small forward at the college level. A better player than Canon Cunningham at the current time but has less upside. Was promised big things to attend SMU. (Becoming a star) Maybe a transfer candidate in 2 years. Hondo Webb. Melissa HS Don't think he has signed with anyone but was getting looks from other Sunbelt school and DII's. Excellent student who may rely on an academic ship. Lead Melissa to the #1 (2A) State Ranking (undefeated) prior to the playoffs. First lost was to Trey Davis' Woodrow Wilson team in a HS warm-up game by 20-30. Anyway, a very good "Walk On" candidate. I like this guy but he did not compete against the best competition. I think Melissa is in the district with Howe. http://thsca.pointstreaksites.com/files/uploaded_documents/386/Basketball_2011.pdf

  25. With two 4 star transfers coming in and a good start to turning the program around, maybe this will help pull in a better than good, maybe even exceptional, recruiting class. Other players take notice of who is on the roster and coming in. Hoping this is just a start of good things from D-Mac & Co.

  29. Tylermeangreen has been pointing this out for some time, and has expressed some frustration in the past for the lack of focus on the east Texas area...now, that has changed as have several things with this new and experienced coaching staff. Tylermeangreen is a very good source of east Texas info...thanks Tylermeangreen.

  31. I would say the same goes for us...there are going to be some good matchups between NT and WKU in the future...too bad after this year they won't have to come back to denton until 2017.

  32. Saw a digital billboard today, had the UTA and WAC logos and it said: "A Whole New Ballgame" Sorry, but bragging about going to the WAC is equivalent to boasting about shagging Ann Margret. It may have been a big deal in the past, but nowadays.... not so much.

  33. If on the athletic side, I tend to agree. That, or a substantial chunk toward the football stadium; which, in turn, will also allow us to start up a baseball program posthaste. If on the academic side, I hope it's research funding that will push us to Tier 1 status in that criterion.

  37. Because maybe they're brand new to the whole North Texas thing and are coming by to check it out, you know, potentially thereby increasing the fan base. Please, for the love of all things, refrain from posting photos of people in the stadium wearing the wrong color. It doesn't make people want to return. Unless there are 30,000 people on GMG.com that can fill the new stadium every game whilst wearing the perfect shade of green as measured by some secret laboratory, let people wear what they want to wear. They'll get the green shirts soon enough once they become repeat customers.

  38. You're comparing apples and oranges. Mitchel "left" Missouri because he couldn't get enrolled into the school as a student athlete due to some questions regarding his high school transcript and the B12 doesn't allow allow partial qualifiers. Rather than pay out-of-state tuition, he came back to Texas where he was able to enroll into North Texas as a regular student and should become a full team member once he is cleared to play by the NCAA. If you want to get right down to it, Mitchel was never a student at Missouri since he never enrolled, therefore he never quit anything.

  39. Ah yes, but from the waist down, that's where the mean green excel.

  40. Technically Tony Mitchell didn't quit on anything...
    1 point
  41. My point, and reason for feeling the way I do, is that I refuse to label someone with such a negative word for choosing family over self. Would it have been easier for him to stay at a school he's comfortable with, in the offense he already knows, with a coach who knows him, and a team already supporting him? I guess that's the point of argument but I believe so. Did he leave our team and join another? Yes. So those of you claiming his label as quitter is simply a factual statement will point to that and smile as if you've won the argument. But, the tone with which you call him a quitter proves that you're not just stating fact but also implying weakness in his character or person. So, please, next time you get excited about Tony Mitchell or Tyler Stradford remember that according to your own rules, they are quitters to. And we don't like quitters at North Texas.

  42. I love Blakeley's legacy as much as anyone can that did not personally witness it. But, I'm not on board with naming the court after anyone at this time. I'm not sure anyone has earned that honor. Especially since we've never had a coach win an NCAA tournament game.

  43. That's what she said.

  44. I totally agree....Riley is not a quitter. I went to all 12 games last season. He played to the best of his ability while dealing with a number of injuries. Considering the circumstances, transferring from North Texas was in his best interest.

  46. --- All of those bank bailouts occurred in 2008.... before the 2008 election. ---I very much agree with spending cuts.... but not just to programs that were put into place by just the other party which seems to be the big problem. There are two issues to a balanced budget.... more income ( taxes.. I don't want new ones just just SOME of the old ones put back ) and less spending which partly occurred because the unnecessary Iraq war and those insane earmarks really that went crazy. Just don't cut things that should not be cut even if a member of the other party got it passed. --I get tired of hearing those imply the debt problem just occurred after the current guy walked it... it didn't.
