UNT situation with signee may get interesting‎

Recommended Posts

North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal said Thursday night that he has a policy that he doesn’t release players who have signed with North Texas or leave the program during their career. Conversely, he won’t allow his coaches, even new ones like men’s basketball coach Tony Benford, to cut a player based on ability. He said the only way a player will be released is if there is an academic or behavior issue. This is relevant because signee John Odoh may want to follow former coach Johnny Jones to LSU. Villarreal said Odoh hasn’t asked for a release yet. If he does, don’t expect a release -- or at least not one to LSU. Villarreal was adamant that Odoh was recruited by Jones with Mean Green funds. Players may leave, but without a release, meaning they would then have to pay their own scholarships.

Does this mean that John Odoh still could end up at UNT?

This what was previously reported .

The issue of John Odoh seems far from over.

Not sure you can pay for your own scholarship, that is kind of the point. The bigger question is without a release, Odoh would I believe have to sit out a year.

Look for NT to release him with restrictions, despite the RV quote. It would be interesting however, if he showed up in the fall after completing all academic requirements and NT with no available ships. Maybe, NT like SMU could put him on an academic scholarship.

Again, it appears there is a lot more to this situation than reported.

RV's position may exacerbate the apparent "over number of scholarships" problem for women's basketball. http://meangreenblog...ball-notes.html

What I immediately noticed is that UNT's numbers on the women's side just don't add up. UNT signed five players in the early period, added two more today for seven and has 10 players with eligibility remaining. Even if you figure in that there are walk-ons in that group, there are 17 total players with 15 scholarship slots.

I asked Petersen, and he acknowledged that there would be some turnover before next season. Not that there is anything wrong with that after a coaching change. He didn't want to run down who will still be here in the fall and who won't be.

UNT will come out fine in the end, but it should be interesting to see how it all works out.

Actually, if you look at the current WBB roster, NT is at 15 ships even thought it has been reported that a couple of Aston's signees have not yet qualified. 7 returning players +5 early signees +3 late signees

A couple of out of state players who played little are no longer on the roster. If you believe RV, I guess they got homesick and went home. Whatever happened, it was probably prior to Peterson as he has only signed one player that Aston didn't recruit.

If we are allowed 15 scholarships, am I missing someone? Seems like we should be able to still carry Odoh.
