North Texas appears as if it will get a second chance at signing one of the top Dallas-area high school players from the class of 2005.

Marquez Haynes, a 6-3 guard from Irving, has asked for and been granted a release from Boston College, where he spent the first two years of his college basketball career, a school official said Thursday.

Haynes will have two years of eligibility remaining and is considering transferring to several schools, including UNT.

Haynes also has interest in Texas A&M, Iowa State, UNLV, TCU and SMU.

“Staying close to home will not be the deciding factor,” said Erven Davis, Haynes’ former AAU coach. “He wants to play in an up-tempo style that will fit him. If he can find a team that plays that style close to home, it will help.”

Davis said he would sit down with Haynes in the next few days to discuss schools where Haynes could transfer.

Haynes averaged 3.8 points in 17.5 minutes a game this season for Boston College, which lost to Georgetown on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He posted 2.5 points in 10.3 minutes a game as a freshman.

The best stretch of Haynes’ sophomore season came in December, when he scored in double figures in consecutive games against Kansas, Duquesne and Northeastern. Haynes, who can play either guard spot, posted season highs in points (12), rebounds (4) and assists (6) in the Eagles’ loss to Duquesne.

Haynes’ playing time diminished at the end of the season, when he scored just four points in his last six games.

Texashoops.com rated Haynes No. 19 on its list of the best 20 players in the state in 2005, when he completed a standout high school career that included stops at both Irving and Irving Nimitz.

Haynes was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year in District 6-5A as a senior at Irving. He was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year in District 8-5A as a junior when he played for Nimitz.

UNT, SMU, TCU and Tulsa each offered Haynes a scholarship during his senior year in high school.

Haynes would have to sit out one season if he transfers from Boston College to another Division I school.

It seems that we sure have been following Marquez Haynes for a while.

If you put his name in the Search on gomeangreen.com you'll find several articles about his high school and AAU performances.

Marquez may not be ideal for every team's system, but Johnny seems confident that he could be an outstanding player at North Texas.
