The UNT women's tennis program did something it hasn't done since 2016 Sunday, knocking off Houston 4-3 to earn its first win over a Big 12 Conference opponent in nearly eight years.

The Mean Green were not done there, however, as they swept Collin College 4-0 in the second match of the day to extend the win streak to four straight.

Why is NT scheduling tennis games against community or juco colleges?

Probably due to new coach not having time to get the kind of schedule she wants, but I think it is a bad look for NT.

On this year's schedule, Collin County, Crowley County, and Tyler jr. College

These jucos maybe great competition, but beating these teams is certainly not going to help the image of the program or recruiting.

typical for many schools, these matches are played typically in a DH. Not unusual at all. TJC and Cowley County are both Top 5 JUCO's and give coaches a chance to see potential recruits.

Great point on the recruiting angle, but I still don't like the optics.

Any insights on team development?

young but very talented and will fight to the end, have the right coaches in place, will just take time for the freshmen to gain confidence

All teams will play in tournament seeding based on ITA Ranking since the AAC does not play a full round robin schedule.

I am thinking SMU, Memphis, Tulsa and Rice will be the Teams to beat this year. Charlotte would be a darkhorse.

Looking at the ITA rankings as of today (they only show rankings for the top 75):

#37 SMU     #38 Memphis     Tied at #61:  Charlotte and UTSA

We have played two conference foes thus far this spring, losing to FAU 1-4 and USF 3-4

Upcoming matches with confernce foes UTSA (March 2 at UNT), Wichita State, Rice, Charlotte, Tulane, Tulsa, Temple

It will be interesting to see if we can pull out some wins to avoid playing one of the very top seeds in the first round of the conference tournament at SMU in mid-April.  Going to be tough with such a young team this year, but you never know!

We may have had a somewhat soft schedule in the fall, but it has definitely changed for the spring season.  Last weekend we faced #39 FIU, losing 1-6, and #49 Grand Canyon, losing 0-4.  Next up is #61 UTSA next Saturday.

Coach Stone will be on tomorrow's noon Mean Green Coaches Show to discuss her young team.  I will be interested in hearing what she has to say.  Turn in to the Varsity Network or KHYI 95.3 to hear the broadcast if you are not attending.
