North Texas to honor college football legend Hayden Fry in season opener Saturday

Coach Andy Mac

When North Texas takes the field on Saturday for their opener against Northwestern State, the Mean Green will be wearing a helmet and uniform combination honoring former coach Hayden Fry.

Last season the team featured the school’s old “flying worm” on a white helmet, and this season’s version will honor Fry, who coached at North Texas from 1973-78. The helmets are inspired by the logo Fry and artist Rick Spears helped to bring to North Texas, which was North Texas State at the time.

ha! That generation wouldn't let it happen.  Let's talk more about the Tennessee win.

I’ll bite, but with a different angle that many other newbies on GMG may not know.

After Fry’s scrappy bunch of Texas HS recruits beat a “7 wins” Vols football team, UT Coach Bill Battle would be fired soon after or after the 1975 season ended.

▶️Long story short:  Battle went to his ol’ college coach & buddy Bear Bryant for a small business loan & with that he started the College Licensing company. As they say—the rest is history.

🦅❇️🦅 GMG!
