Former Texas Tech football coach Spike Dykes Passes Away

My favorite all time Spike Dykes quote was at a preseason SWC coaches media day and he was complaining about how  players don't work hard enough for his liking--that they were used to things being given to them without effort. He said, "Today, when you talk about manual labor, they think you're taking about a TE from McAllen..."

One of my favorites.

Some college coaches would come to Coaching School and were "big time". 

Coach Dykes was always one of us.

I heard him tell the story of hitchhiking as a teenager one hot summers day in West Texas.  A pick-up stopped to pick he and his friend up and when they got in the cab of the truck, they couldn't figure out what the cold air was that was blowing from the dashboard.  It was his first time to ride in a vehicle with air conditioning.

 

Admittedly, my version of the story is not quite as good as his.
