Jeffery Wilson

Why was he not redshirted? Or why did he not just continue to sit out after his injury and try to receive a medical red shirt? If he turns out to be a stud we will all look back and wonder why Mac did this and cost Wilson another full year.

I hope to look back and wish he'd stayed for his senior year instead of opting for the NFL draft after playing lights out for the next two years.

Redshirting RBs seems to be somewhat rare, if that's what they're recruited at and that's where they stay. You don't typically have the development issues you do with linemen and QBs, or even WRs. RBs are usually ready to hit the ground running. And they usually aren't redshirted just because there's already a good stable. T.J. Yeldon was not redshirted at Alabama even though they already had Eddie Lacy and other good RBs ready to go. Trent Richardson was not redshirted even though they had Mark Ingram ahead of him.

That said, Ivery probably would have been a good redshirt candidate considering how sparingly he's been used. It would have been nice to have a year of eligibility difference between Wilson and Ivery instead of having Wilson, Ivery, Tucker, and Evans all crowded together in the same class.

But Eddie Lacy was redshirted though, because they had Ingram and Richardson. Those guys you mentioned were the number two back, which is why they weren't redshirted. Ivery was basically our number 5. Ivery was good enough to play this year, but we didn't need him to. And we aren't taking a running back this class (2015). Not a huge deal starting an underclassmen at running back down the line once these guys all leave.

The bigger issue is that Wilson, Ivery, and Evans are set to graduate from this team at the same time. Those grade logjams can make things tricky down the line. Luckily it's running back, so I'm not too concerned.

From just a skill perspective, I think Jeffery Wilson may have the best chance of anyone on this team. As fast as defenses are in the NFL, straight-line speed is starting to take a back seat to cutting ability. Especially as prominent as zone blocking schemes have become. That plays well into Wilson's skills, as he has elite cutting ability. Obviously a lot needs to happen for him to have that shot, but he should be fun to watch here.

I said Ivery probably should have been redshirted. I was simply pointing out that playing Wilson as a true freshman was not that far removed from the mainstream.
