  1. Well I got an email from ESPN letting me know that the college football season is less than a week away. No, the season already started a-holes. P5 elites gonna P5 elite I guess.

  4. I saw that my logo design from a few years ago popped up on Twitter today. It reminded me that I have be wanting to revisit the design. Someone had mentioned before that they'd prefer the tri-lettering of 'UNT' rather than 'North Texas' spelled out, since it would look more symmetrical. They were right, so I made a version with that change. I also tweaked the helmets a little bit, by cleaning them up, adding some rotation, and making the logos bigger and more like they are on the actual helmets. I guess the Safeway Bowl isn't for another couple of weeks, but I still get pumped about it every year. Go Mean Green!

  6. I have often wondered why so many sportswriters want to see greatness in SMU, even ignoring history (outside of the pre-death penalty years) to do so. I never realized so many of our fans were willing to do the same. They beat Texas State by 30 last year, scoring more than this year and holding TSU to less points than this year. Yet, somehow, when they line up against us they will magically be every bit the team they were last year??? We’re so eager to denigrate our own squad that we’re willing to over-inflate the competition to do so.

  7. What I liked: Our corners were better than anything we ran out there last year. We played several and changed them repeatedly to keep them fresh. The last group of freshmen are not ready. It was obvious last year game 1 that we were in trouble in the secondary. Maybe not so much this year. We also did not show much variety in scheme (probably because we did not have to). I also liked that we seem to have moved a couple of guys to safety that were not playing there last year. Cam and Gibbs both were much better at safety. I think last year we were asking them to play out of position. Noted is that most of the H.B. scheme was to get the ball out quickly. They will complete a lot of short routes. At that point, you have to tackle. We tackled better than last year, but I still probably would not list that as a strength. What concerns me: That I saw, we never got out of a 3 man front, not even on the goal line. Our DL is a collection of 3 techniques. They are not built to rush the passer and cannot get to the QB when you rush 3 against 5 or 6. We got very little pressure from our down people and I don't think that we will in this scheme. Noted is that H.B. threw a lot of short routes. Their scheme is designed to get the ball out of the QB's hands quickly. It is hard to pressure that scheme. Also, we do not stunt very well from the second level. When your strength is speed, don't run into the fat guys. When the fat guy grabs you, the speed thing is over. Also noted is that when the ball is gone quickly, it does not do much good to stunt. The overall defense is better than last year's, but it almost had to be. The scheme is better. The kids are in places where they can make plays. If this defense can just be average, I think we will be okay.

  8. My god. Between that and the Iron Skillet our trophy case is going to look like a trip to Target. How are the receivers and DB's looking? I predict we go back to the 4-3 and focus on stopping your running game and force your receivers to make plays while we go back to more of a basic Air Raid and try to flood your defensive backfield. Wondering how we are going to match up on the outside.

  9. Quick Question, Norm: if Siggers returns to early-2019 form, would Tre+Adaway be the best 1-2 punch since Patrick-Jamario?

  10. Can someone explain to me the benefits of running a 3-3-5 scheme? My takeaways from this particular defense at UNT is that you must have the right personnel to handle the complexities of it. I know for the most part that having extra men in the secondary have the benefit of disguising coverages and blitz packages but again, the only time that seems to work for us is when we have a skilled and mature secondary (i.e 2018 season). And in our experience, it is definitely not a forgiving system for players that can't measure up to it. My main concern is that the CB position in a 3-3-5 seem to have a ton of pressure by holding down the corners of the field with little help. I always noticed last year how our Corners almost always give about 5-10 yards of space between them and the line of scrimmage. I attribute this to not having enough talent to disrupt routes by being physical and closer to the LOS and instead hedging to prevent any large chucks of yardage by getting beat at the line. Maybe that's just part of the scheme, idk. Regardless, 3-3-5 is an interesting concept and I would hypothesize the main reason we have this defense in place is to make up for our lack in size and replace it with more available speed in terms of the players we recruit. But man, it drives me nuts that we never are able to consistently apply pressure in the backfield. It doesn't seem like a 3-3-5 prioritizes that, but rather tries to plug up as much of the field with as many bodies as possible while throwing in a blitz to try to confuse the QB/OL. Idk... anyone else have thoughts on it?

  11. Not to mention our first TD shouldn't have even happened in the first place, but we got an EXTREMELY GENEROUS spot on that 4th down conversion.

  12. So I rewatched the game and I'm a lot more worried than I initially thought. They missed 3 field goals. If they make those it's a 23-19 game midway through the 3rd. They moved the ball consistently, our corners were beat deep multiple times, our safeties/LBs got beat up the seam multiple times. Bean made some questionable throws that are probably picked against an FBS team. I get they scored two TD's late to make it look more respectable but they were within 2 scores for the majority of the game. To me, that's reason to worry. I have a bad feeling about SMU if we play like we did against HBU.

  25. I watched the first half of y'alls game and would just say I would not worry about your defense yet. They were dinking and dunking all game. Cheap yardage. Why do anything about that? First game against HBU, no need to press and get creative. That brings me to my second point: I am sure you were playing base defense all night. Why show blitzes and schemes against HBU?

  27. Re: North Texas State Hi-Lites by ALEX LIFESON » Mon Sep 07, 2020 8:46 am Their QB seems to throw a nice deep ball and is pretty mobile. Tx State had one defensive returning starter against us, with a converted fullback at nose tackle... Our o-line has 4 returning starters and still had their azzes handed to them, by a depleted Bobcat team...Shane almost got killed, with pass rushers running free. NTS game could be a shoot out, in their annual Super Bowl. read more: http://www.ponyfans.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=88903&sid=7fea16af67262587d072d7ed4ade1d7a

  28. I have read post after post about how the SMU juggernaut is going to destroy us based on last night’s performance by our team against HBU. Would that be the same SMU that squeaked out a 10 point win against Texas State (that was honestly far closer until VERY late in the game)? Texas State was 3-9 last year, got routinely blown out, and beat the same HBU team we just played by 9. Last night’s game told me a grand total of nothing about the rest of the season for our team. Bean is fast (not Aune “quick” but legitimately FAST). Both quarterbacks missed some throws. The defense kept it very basic against an overmatched team. The offense ran very basic rushing plays and took big gains when our receivers overmatched their corners. Our backups saw significant time. SMU is going to be a tough game...but they didn’t become Clemson over the off-season

  29. • This video of 1997 TAMU @ UNT game showed up on YouTube several weeks ago. ✳️ Real Mean Green action begins at 30:00 on the timeline. • UNT had beaten Texas Tech the week before. • Texas A&M broadcast team of Dave South & former AG QB Dave Elmendorf said it was the largest “home crowd” in UNT history. (Of course, there were a few Aggies who showed up, too).🙄 • I had forgotten that the Aggies were ranked #22 coming in for that game. GMG!

  30. I don't get that either. I've heard that the team is down because several of his better players opted out this year supposedly due to the coronavirus. Of course, it could be that they just didn't want to play for Hopson and used the pandemic as an excuse.

  32. Quoted 40 times are so unreliable, they are only valid as some kind of loose range. Bean is fast based on track times, but just watch him play. He is super fast, I really thought he would run more in the first game.
