  3. A theory was mentioned to me that the coaches may have touted Bean as the backup last year even when Aune outplayed him in camp to ensure both would still be here for the 2020 season since Aune already has a house here and is much less likely to transfer. If this theory had merit, you would have them battle it out through fall camp, announce Aune as the starter right before the first game and have Bean be his backup, then probably see Bean transfer after the season with maybe Martin and Kuehne choosing to do the same over backing up Aune for two more years. In that scenario, plus not signing a 2020 HS QB, we’d possibly be down to just Aune and Drummond as our only scholarship QBs heading into the 2021 season. Having Gilmore on the roster after his redshirt would be huge in that scenario. I get that’s a lot of conjecture, but the risk of transfers is pretty similar if Bean wins the job. I think this move is made with this risk very much in mind.

  4. Review our last 3 years in football and basketball. We are 5 games over .500 in football with a division title and have won 20 straight games each of those years in basketball including coming off of a conference championship, which you can’t just gloss over even in your narrative (devil’s advocate?) that we don’t bring enough to the table. Plus we’re coming off signing some of the top recruiting classes in the conference in each. Stats and data ranges can easily be manipulated to fit a narrative, but under the current administration and head coaches for football and basketball, we have made ourselves much more competitive and attractive. We need to get rid of this RV mindset he seemed to plant in our fanbases’ heads that things under him were as good as they could be at UNT and any shortcomings we had from 2001-2015 were just because it’s hard at UNT. We all know that isn’t going to be any sort of deciding factor in this type of decision. We’re discussing a hypothetical in which the California football programs are incapable of fielding football teams this season, and us hopping in on that opportunity to fill those slots in their schedule. Probably not realistic but that wasn’t the point of discussing if we should try and jump on that opportunity like MeanGreenTexan asked. No disagreements on that. But also don’t think being in the MWC precludes us from making those type of moves if that scenario were to transpire.

  5. Unbiased facts are out there. What you consider serious health issues are not what covid considers serious. High blood pressure? Diabetes? Recovering from a prior normal cold? That's all it takes to be a 'high risk' pre-existing condition. You probably think it's only cancer, lupus, or more serious things.. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6919e6.htm Just a mere 2.5 hour practice, with shared food environment, chair stacking and aerosol spraying from singing (cheering) and 3.7% of the choir ended up dead. 87% ended up catching it. And if it spread that easily 87%!! imagined how those people can then go to the grocery store and touch fruit and carts, or touch the tithe bowl... And it spreads so readily. On the hub club level, it's filled with gray hair, oxygen tanks and walkers. I swear it's a time bomb ready to go off with an outbreak.

  11. “I challenged Amani,” Smith told Kentucky Sports. “From the first bye week to the second bye week, you could see the progress that he made. Coach Hinshaw has done a tremendous job of working on some of his mechanical things, some things that he might have been deficient in at that point, going into the first bye week. When we let him take reps that second bye week, he was 20 times better.”

  13. Amani Gilmore committed to Kentucky last year so I'd guess that he sits out the 2020 season. He is a 6-2 200 pound left-handed pro style quarterback from Amite (pronounced a-meet) LA. Last year he had a composite rating of .8464.

  14. Opposing fan attendance should never figure in conference choice. Should be about level of competition and revenue (which would include TV deal) only.

  15. Why would we go from an already spaced out conference, to one that covers half of the United States? Also, why is this still a thread lol

  16. Cool - "everything on the table" mean to not let the elderly attend (maybe we can be lucky enough for them to show up and protest with AR-15s!). Age is what you consider the tale tell of people who will die. Age is the 'pre-existing condition.' That's a fine take - you can have that. It isn't accurate though. Another note (not that it seems to matter) - the largest hospital chain here in Dallas is doing serology on all operative patients in advance of surgery. So far the non-symptomatic infection rate is 1.4%! That is a huge number. If you have 500 on the hub club, you may have 7 spreaders on the floor that have no idea they have it at all -- or they are not showing any signs yet. They will potentially spreading to 300+ people on a given game. That's a pretty hot take to not care. It transmits from non-symptomatic carriers - which is why different that a flu or cold.

  17. 6’3” 290 lb defensive tackle from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California. His highlights show 2018 as his freshman season but not sure about what happened in 2019. Not 100% sure this is a 2020 offer but JUCO Frenzy lists him as one and he retweeted it. I believe we still have two spots left for the 2020 class. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/6225777/5bb79c71b0232515ac9ffee2

  21. Former UK All-SEC defensive back Van Hiles knows plenty about Gilmore, a Louisiana native like Hiles. “If he keeps progressing, he is special,” Hiles said. “He is left-handed and has a great arm. He is Terry Wilson almost. He has great straight line speed. He played in a spread offense on a really good team in high school that won the state championship his senior year. “He has all the attributes to be a really special player. He will be more than just good, especially since UK is bringing in receivers for him to have a really good group of skilled players around him. Coach (Vince) Marrow is getting really good tight ends every year. He should really have a lot of talent at his disposal going forward.” read more: https://www.vaughtsviews.com/2019/09/freshman-qb-amani-gilmore-could-eventually-be-special-but-also-could-be-forced-into-action-this-year/

  23. There was a time here when our chancellor was Lee Jackson, Gretchen Bataille, Rick Villareal, and Todd Dodge to lead the university system, campus, AD, and football program---while playing at Fouts Field. If you need to feel better in these difficult times, think of each person that is currently serving in these positions listed above, while looking at Apogee.

  28. Agreed. Excited but curious. Doesn’t this put our QB room at like 8 deep now? Maybe an insurance policy in case the Aune/Bean experiment doesn’t work? Then again more competition never hurt anyone so who knows.

  29. Some MWC teams are planning a temporary shutdown of athletics because they don't want to travel. So there may be an opening for NT to take their place. Talk about an absolute leap. What logic, some of MWC want to curtail travel, therefore it is obvious the rest want to expand their conference thousands of miles. It is the off off way off season.

  30. We don't know what the death rate is, so I'm not sure how you came up with 0.05%. The current known death rate is 5.9% Obviously it's way lower than that, but we aren't sure what the number is.

  31. So, what benchmark should be used to determine when it is safe to open up the economy and lift the quarantine? The hospital my company is affiliated with, and most hospitals nationwide, were informed of the outbreak and led to believe they would be overrun like NYC. They applied the NYC model to the entire country. To date, our hospital has had a total of about nine Covid-19 patients and the county just reached 100 positive cases. That is .5% of the counties population. A "one-size fits all" model is not effective. People have to take personal responsibility and make proper decisions.

  33. Your assumption is wrong. It came out last week....that all 8 of our seniors.....decided not to return. They want to go on to their careers. Our school was willing to pay for their extra year. (Must be noted that softball players don't all get full scholarships.....not sure if any do. So if the gals had come back....they would have had to pay some of their own way. But our school was willing to pay what they had been paying.) https://dentonrc.com/rsssports/unt-softball-seniors-walking-away-with-fond-memories-after-deciding-to-not-take-advantage-of/article_78a7309b-b4b7-585e-8b32-1e65e7b061a3.html

  34. So the previous 70 years were not worth it? That can't be what you're saying. Look, if the MWC called I would definitely take it over any possible CUSA/SBC merger. In the grand scheme of things, it's a no-brainer. But abandoning some of these schools from the SBC/CUSA (especially the Louisiana schools) feels like I'm trading in the weekly fireside hang with favorite beer and friends, for a corporate date at a party in DC sponsored by White Claw. You're gonna appreciate everyone and people are gonna throw enough money around. But you're not sure if you will see them again anytime soon and you get tired of all the flight miles. It's what everyone needs to do, but you know in your heart of hearts that the only reason you're doing it is because everyone else is doing it.

  37. Other factors (idle thoughts, so maybe there is more): The fanbase of other schools (would they come to Denton, and would could they offer?) brand recognition. How much are the schools on TV? level of play. How often do the schools populate the T25? EDIT FOR FOLLOW UP: The Big West as we think of it existed in the 80s, early-1990s. We experienced it in the late 1990s. I would be cautious of any comparison that tries to look that far back (even 2000!). The landscape of branding, money, media is astronomically different.

  38. I was in Germany when all of this started. Work (Government Sponsored Enterprise) and the CDC made me stay at home for 2 weeks. So I worked from home. Once my 2 weeks was up, I went back to the office. We are considered essential, so I have been back in the office for 6 weeks now.

  43. If UNT wants some actual state political pull, they would have to actually hire someone competent. UNT refusing to play politics is why they aren't in the SEC, Big 12 or AAC and weren't in the SWC. Let's not even get into state funding.
