  1. Student Alumni Association drew this up. Excellent, exactly what I was thinking. For this week, just gonna circulate this online. After this game, we're gonna modify it with new myths or numbers or whatever and post these all over campus. Just thought you'd like an update. This is the official one, you can post it and publicize it however you like as long as the basic rules apply...just represent us well!

  2. What the hell have we become? We don't need your help! Why? Are we so high and mighty that we refuse a generous offer from a high school? Why all of the animosity? I sure as hell hope that North Texas never fails to offer help to anyone in need. There used to be a word called sportsmanship but I haven't seen or heard it lately. Excuse me, I believe that Hal Wasson just exhibited some of it.

  12. Not really DMN related, but it is close enough to their office: I almost wanted to throw up inside my car when I was driving home Saturday night from watching the North Texas game with a friend and saw Reunion Tower lit up red and blue with white SMU scrolling around it. I thought about turning around and driving up to Denton to cleanse myself with some green.

  13. A game between a Dickey coached team and a Mac coached team would be the fastest game you've ever watched (in time), all while feeling like it was the slowest game you've ever watched (boring snoozefest). Someone would have to win, so I'll take Mac's team (better head coach) at Apogee over Dickey's team in a thriller, something like 9-6 in 7 OTs where each team misses several field goals and causes simultaneous death for June Jones, Mike Leach, Art Briles, and Kevin Sumlin from falling asleep and never awakening during a game that featured about 5 completed passes, none of which went for a first down...And FroggyStyle, CougarQueen, and GL2Greatness will die from an accidental mass auto-erotic asphyxiation when they decide that this is the worst moment of their lives, but want to try something for the first time together... After the game, in which Dickey's team showed up in Hutch black jerseys, he will complain that this was the worst situation to coach in, since he coaches here EVERYDAY. But, in full confidence of his OC, Ramon Flanigan, who fought a fan before halftime and then punched a few players in the locker room, will get an extension on the spot for running the ball up the middle ever single play of the game, except for two Hail Mary passes at the end of each half that got intercepted, causing Dickey to summon Diet Coke boy over for a caffeine boost. Meanwhile, Coach Mac will say after the game that we have turned the corner, that we have finally built back up from the ashes, and that the Grey Goose will be flowing at his place in celebration of the biggest win in his lifetime!! He will then say that this is what he dreamed of when he came aboard as our head coach!! KRAM and PMG will fight on just how highly ranked UNT will be to start the next season and what BCS bowl we will end up in. UNT90 will post about how this game sent the program backwards for decades and that we blew an opportunity to fire Tony Benford. I will post about how terrible it is that RV got another 5-year extension for doing nothing. And Emmitt and FFR will talk about the lack of Talons at the game and the fact that Boomer never got fired off when the FGs went thru the goalposts. Harry will report that gmg.com got the most visits of all time and that it was now going to cost to visit the site so that their servers won't crash anymore. Finally, in the DRC on the next day, Brett Vito will run a column on how Todd Dodge wouldn't let him ever watch practice and how awful it was to cover the team during his tenure--and finish it with an "Oh by the way, Coach Mac's team won a hard fought game the night before"...

  21. Not a bad little school down there in SA, still has a long way to go but I am thinking they are going to have a good contingent of fans up here for the game. I know I am bringing at least one UTSA student with me. They still have a bunch to prove but there is no telling what they might be able to pull off. Not that week of course, but eventually maybe. And remeber after 100 years of UTSA football... they will still be about 100 years behind us.

  23. Said the team should be fun to watch...fast paced...transition game...players are really taking advantage of the new practice facility...Colman may be the most improved player...We have shooters this year that other teams will have to guard...other teams will not just be able to sag down on one guy...they will have to guard our shooters. By the way...everyone aware of the new rules for this year? Looks like 'no touching" is in play...touches on shoulders and arms will be fouls...opens things up for shooters...seems the basketball folks were worried about the reduction in scoring (fans like scoring), so they changed the rules. After the show Coach Benford said the new rules gave really changed the game and how it will be played and coached. More scoring...get ready for it! Coach B thought the new rules will really help UNT. Oh yes...GAME FRIDAY at 7pm at the Super Pit...no ticket needed...no cost...come grab a seat and take a look at this year's version of the Mean Green. Cannot believe basketball season is upon us...getting ready for some Mean Green basketball! Both Mean Green football and basketball going at the same time...GREATNESS!

  26. I'm in a bit of weird position being both a graduate student and a staff member, so I'm not anywhere close to being a representative sample. None of my Ph.D. cohort are talking about it, but that's not surprising. I've offered to take a few of them to games before, but they're not interested. In all fairness, most of them who live here in town are foreign nationals and American football isn't really their thing. Lots of talk among staff about the game. I spent about 20 minutes talking to an executive-level administrator about it earlier today. The iPad Air giveaway is good thinking; promotions like that ought to convert a few maybes into butts in seats for those who are considering going but are on the fence about it versus getting their Halloween partying started early. I really like that kind of active, engaged stuff to get new people to the stadium. We should be doing something like this every game.

  27. Some math for your ass... The 2004 team finished the season at 7-5, against the second hardest schedule of the bowl years. The combined win percentage of teams they beat was 36%, while the teams they lost to was 60.5%. Their signature wins were against three teams with 5-7 records: MTSU, NMSU, and ULM. They did not beat anyone with a winning record. The 2003 team finished the season at 9-4, playing the easiest (by far) schedule of the bowl years. The combined win percentage of teams they beat was just 29.6%, while the teams they lost to was 70.6%. Their signature win came against 6-6 Troy, although publicity wise the best win was against 3-9 Baylor. The 2002 team finished the season at 8-5, and was technically the best team fielded during the bowl years. They faced the hardest schedule with the combined win percentage of teams they beat at 36.4%, while the teams they lost to was 72%. Their signature wins came against 7-5 New Mexico State and 7-7 Cincinnati. The 2001 team finished the season at 5-7. The combined win percentage of teams they beat was 33.8%, while the teams they lost to was 58%. Their signature win was against 8-3 MTSU, and not much more needs to be said after that. With all that said, here is 2013's team: The 2013 team has a 5-3 record and has not yet finished the season. The combined win percentage of teams they've beaten is 37.8%, higher than any of the bowl years. The teams they lost to are currently at 69%. Their signature win is against 8-1 (.889) Ball State. The next closest quality win was against MTSU in 2001 (.727). Out of all the bowl years, the 2002 team was the only other one besides 2013 to beat both an opponent with a winning record and an opponent with a .500 record. If UNT wins Thursday, it will mark the first time since 1999 where the Mean Green have beaten two D1-A/FBS opponents with a winning record in the same season, barring a total collapse by Rice. Also interesting is the combined winning percentage of teams we beat in 2011 was a measly 18.3%, versus in 2012 it was 36.5%. The 2011 team faced pretty unsurmountable odds with the teams that beat them racking up a 74.4% winning percentage.

  29. It's a screwjob. No, actually, it's really a push to single-payor/true socialism. If you buy your own insurance for your family, as we've done for years, it's nothing but a kick in the nuts. The middle class is always handed the bill. Met with the owner of five pizza franchises this afternoon. In order to avoid the penalties of Obamacare, the owner of the five franchises is splitting the company into three separate companies so he won't have to fire anyone or cut back hours. Stupid. The whole law is stupid. It will never fund itself. Ever. You can't have an insurance program - P&C, Health, any line - that isn't allowed to underwrite the risk and expect it to be fiscally viable. This country needs more business owners as legislatures and far less lawyers. I'm afraid it will never happen. Our congress and the succession of Democratic presidents we are about to endure will legislate America into the type of social and economic morass into which Mexico and the Central and South American countries perpetually find themsleves.

  35. Good teams beat good teams. Pointing out your strength of schedule as to why you are losing proves nothing other than you lost ... to good teams. At least we can claim we've beaten two teams that had a winning record at the time we played them (Ball State (2-0) & MTSU (3-3)). We'll see how things go after Thursday night's game as we have the possibility of defeating another team that had a winning record when we played them (6-2).

  39. Mac is the better coach. But,Dickey had the better team. A Hall, Blount, Quinn, Branch, and Cobbs combo would beat a Thompson, Chancellor, Byrd, Smith, Miller combo. OL-Brewster, Brown, Zuniga, Nobles, Thaggard, and Lineberry would have been a better O-line than we have now.... by a lot in my opinion. DL-Awasome, Kennedy, Pruitt/or McIver, Cardwell, Hutchinson is a better D-line than what we have now. LB- This one may be even.... but I still give the edge to Casey, Hurd, and Spencer were a better unit. DB-This one is like the LB. But, I still see Buckles, Jones, Knowlton, and Pearl as more reliable. opponents couldn't throw that well against them and they couldn't run well either. And, we still were known for being an extremely hard-hitting team. I gotta say, I think 2003 team could beat 2013 team without too much difficulty.

  42. 100 people gather at a local bar to watch UNT pummel its opposition in a road game. Every television in the bar, save one small screen waaay in the back corner by the foosball table, has the UNT game on. Every person in the bar is actively engaged in the UNT game. When UNT scores, the owner of the bar plays the UNT fight song over the loud speakers, then entire bar sings along. But let's focus on the one drunk guy who said a bad word. Actively seeking out even the most minute detail of negativity does nobody any favors.

  43. My Plumm 2.0 post for the week... This is all so weird. I get that a lot of the pissiness comes from the fact that UTSA has blown up so quickly, but if we had a few promos getting a few more butts in seats we could have a full stadium, so it seems to be redirected angst based on the long-term dissatisfaction with the way our promotions are handled, which is also partially redirected from the spurned desire to bring alumni and fans back into the fold faster, no matter how much they resist. Additionally...aren't there a few other college teams that play in pro stadiums? I love that we have our own, but if the proximity is reasonable, why build another? Some of Runner's attempts at a "sick burn" were pretty lame, but some of the arguments against UTSA don't add up either, at least to me. For the moment, without assuming UTSA football will either become a complete failure or conversely go gangbusters and pass the rest of the CUSA Texas schools by, let's just view things as what they are. We have a new conference mate from the same state, in a city everyone knows and many either come from or have friends/family who attended...and a great destination for away games. Good for the casual non-fans who have at least heard of UTSA, and good for a good traveling contingent. When you bump into the millions of people in Texas who are at least generally aware of the school and AREN'T on this site, it will be nice to hear them say in coming years, "Texas-San Antonio is pretty good this year" and you get to reply "Yeah, but we beat them." So I hope they have lots of wins against everybody except us. They grew their program so quickly because they are in a great town with a great market and no other competition. So the more they succeed, the more our games will mean, especially when we win. As much as you may hate it, when Texan Joe Non-Fan hears about a great UTSA team being beaten by our Mean Green, it will help a lot more than when we beat other directional/satellite schools from other states that only the die-hards know about. Sure, we all know that ECU has been pretty good for a few years now and that FIU is sucking hard, but to most of the people you would like to draw attention from, bragging about those wins will likely just draw a blank stare and possibly a "Where are they again? Is that a Division I school?". When I worked the Mean Green into random sports talk over the last couple of weeks, the other guys obviously aren't following all of the other teams this season and were really impressed that we beat SMiss and La Tech back-to-back on the road. On a national recognition level, some of our new conference mates help already. But as far as the people in Texas, in the DFW region, all of whom have only a passing knowledge of which schools field teams...San Antonio is a huge city with a UT campus and its own football team. Beating UTSA and UTEP along with Rice or Houston or Texas Tech gets the name recognition which then gets the ball rolling for new fans. If we're so big on promotions and wanting new fans and season ticket holders, we have to realize that the majority of those people will not be following the divisional conference races, the BCS standings, etc. If they are a potential fan, they are a casual observer whose ears perk up at something familiar. To Texans, San Antonio and UT satellite campuses are familiar. The occasional mention of UTEP or UTSA or Rice on Sports Center when they're having a great season helps pique that interest. True, these casual passers-by are not reading this thread. But if you want a crapload of them to buy tickets and maybe stop by this site someday, a better SOS against successful UT-whatever teams also helps. So no matter how you feel personally about how we deserve it more or whatever...if we want more fans, more butts in seats, more demand for TV coverage, etc. etc. then we need these teams to kick ass against everybody else, and then we need to beat them. This kind of reminds me of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when the dude asks Indy if he wants the grail for "His glory, or for yours." Do you guys want to keep the elite little masochistic club of fans who've weathered the storm of dark days in North Texas Athletics, school spirit, and loyalty small and exclusive? Or do you want us to grow properly, have quality wins and name recognition, return alumni to the fold, retain new alumni and donations, and grow as both a fanbase and an institution? I'm in this for North Texas. I want the highest quality wins against the highest caliber teams with the greatest name recognition among potential fans possible. Good luck to every team whose name is familiar enough to our alumni and locals to get them to consider coming to a game and possibly even going a step further. And then I hope we beat them and give those people reason to keep paying attention and keep coming back. I wouldn't trade any of you for a few more of them...but I'd definitely like to see the culture change we've all hoped would finally happen.
