I don't think a coach's public statements ever necessarily comprise his sum assessment of his team. And I believe Coach Dodge and that staff had talent in place to win a whole lot more than 2 games in 2007.

You know, the stereotype you portray above, just doesn't fit. A lot of students and alumni act in the manner you note above, not just those involved in Fraternities or Sororities, it is just that they are visible since they are either wearing their fraternity letters or tailgating under their organizations flag. I am an alumni, member of Sigma Chi and a season ticket holder. Most of the other members of my fraternity that graduated with or after me still support the program as season ticket holders, as do many members of the other Greek organizations. I'm sorry if you have had a bad experience with some that you have come in contact with, but the majority are not this way. Most were involved as students and have remained involved as alumni and are some of the nicest people you could want to know.

Really? Of all the organizations on campus Greek life supports athletics the most. And at least we tailgate, which I can't say for most alumni who show up 30 min before the game starts. It's pretty sad when the alumni parking lot (whatever color it is) sits half empty every Saturday. I know most people on this board tailgate, but overall the alumni turnout is disappointing. I know a lot of students who tailgate for hours and hours only to go home once the game starts and it pisses me off. Coach Mac is smart enough to know that Greek life and football feed off each other and this event was supposed to make Greek life feel like they are apart of this new era of mean green football, which will make more students turnout for games which will hopefully lead to more wins.

Dodge did a lot to clean some basic things up re: APR and off the field issues but he always seemed to be "hoping" for wins rather than confident about building the team. Signing small wide receivers and not putting an emphasis on D was always a huge concern for me. Hell, Mac doesn't even seem to be talking about building a "team" - he is way above that - he is building a "brand"! Love to hear him say "Go Mean Green" and dress like a head coach. There is something to be said about a coach that still wears a tie (and a green one at that!) - it commands respect from the fans and players. I never really liked the Under Armour casual look with the staff during the Dodge years. It seemed gimmicky... and kind of high school. I am liking what I am seeing and hearing so far. I suppose that my only hesitation with Mac is his overall W/L record at ISU... it is just hovering around like an elephant in the room. I hope that we do not have to go 4 or 5 years to start seeing winning teams but I will support the program no matter how long it takes. Let's just do it right this time. Go Mean Green!

Agree. I'm sick of all this "new era" talk. Lets just wait until September and then see how things pan out. How many "new eras" are we going to have?? The Dickey era, Dodge era, Mac era.......I want a freaking "era" that is called "The Winning Era".

I sometimes listen to a "conservative guy" on radio when coming home from the evening classes I teach.... A week a two ago they were criticizing our President for not getting involved in Libya situation... Last night they were complaining because he now has. There is no pleasing these folks. ---I am amazed their "fans" never question or realize it when they start saying the opposite of what they were saying earlier --- They complain about the economy and ignore when it all started (2008). Same with the national debt.. the last guy's administration increased it more than all previous 42 administrations combined. The radio guys have no credibility. My only hope is that we absolutely do not put ground troops in the country, even Reagan bombed Libya back in the 80's and it was the right thing to do. It sent a message about so many terrorists coming from and hiding there. My largest concern is that we don't have a worse government take over any of those countries as happened in Iran during the late 1980's. I thought the same same about Iraq.. Saddam was an evil person but at least terrorism wasn't being done to us (or Europeans) by them. Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11, most of those people involved were Saudi citizens (as is Ben-Laden). I suppose time will tell if we are doing the right thing, but I want us to stay away as much as possible from those Middle East situations. At least our President didn't declare this to be a Crusade as the last one said a couple of times. Crusade to them means Christian war or invasion.... which is exactly what the original ones were. ..

Tailgating is not the part of the event that we care about people attending. Would it be great to have a lot of people at the stadium hours before the game? Yes, but let's not criticize paying fans that come for the game only. Alumni usually have to drive farther and have other considerations when deciding how to spend a Saturday afternoon.

And by the way for those of you who go to many of the home games. Your among greatness when you attend because Kenny hardly ever misses watching his Mean Green play. If you ever get a chance to talk with him you should as he has some great experiences to share. Rick

What stands out to me on that list, is that I hadn't remembered that Calvin Natt went to school in Monroe, and I can't believe it has been 26 years since Keith Lee was at Memphis, and Wayman Tisdale was at Oklahoma. Damn time flies. Hell of a career Kenneth!

First the job isn't officially open yet, but ESPN Insider has an early list of possible replacements for Mike Anderson. Johnny Jones is on the list (5 guys). I haven't heard is name coming from the KC or Missouri press. Here's what the ESPN story had to say about Jones. Johnny Jones of North Texas has been able to raise the profile of the UNT program; it might be a bit of a leap from Sun Belt to the Big 12 but Jones has been able to thoroughly recruit the state of Texas.

This guy just makes you believe again...believe "Why Not UNT"? Why not, indeed. Spring practice has started on a positive note and spirits seem to be high with the players and the fans. At the Mean Green happy Hour event last Tuesday, Coach Mac compared UNT to Boise State, and commented that he thought UNT was in a better position right now to make that sort of progress than was Boise when it started its run to success. Why not? Why the heck not UNT? I believe and I believe the Mean Green has started on its march back to wins and bowls games! Yes, I know...Green Kool-Aid drinking going on here, but you just can't be around the program these days and feel the change that has already been made and the positive attitude of everyone involved. The Green Kool-Aid is tasting a lot sweeter these days, and I think there is very good reason for that sweet taste. GO MEAN GREEN! Change is here...this change is very positive and the future is BRIGHT GREEN!

Maybe I didn't follow recruiting enough during the Dodge era, but it certainly seems to me that Mccarney has immediately raised the level of the recruits we are going after. That is very exciting!

I don't think anyone questions how much work he put into this thing. Sure, the results were lacking, but no one questioned his effort. It didn't work. He'll admit that. But it's not like he wanted to fail. So please, get off his back, be thankful he's gone if you wish, and lets move on.

How can this be viewed as anything but an awesome step in the right direction? We need more participation/attendance/real gameday atmosphere. The tailgating is good(which I really really enjoy btw)...BUT, the most important thing is to have a real game atmosphere IN THE FREAKING STADJUM! Now, as for how Dan "The Man" is approaching things?... The greeks are an EXCELLENT place to start. I did the greek thing. I made some friends in that whole experience. Some of my fellow Delta sig's still tailgate every home game and ...gasp...go into the games. The greeks are a good place to start because most of my greek friends were more sports/competitive oriented... that doesn't mean it is always the case, but that was my experience. So, Dan is starting with what I perceive as being the most eager group to get on board. If this is simply the first organization on campus to be engaged, then this is an excellent plan. Before I joined the Delta Sig's and the reason I came to UNT to begin with, I started as a music major... Now this would be the most difficult group on campus to get engaged. Everyone just relax and realize that we are trying to build a real program and atmosphere in our brand spankin new stadjum. Everybody needs to realize that no matter what organization you affiliate yourself with... we are all on the same team. We are all mean greeners... We have suffered or are just apathetic, and for us to pull through this and be thought of from the outside as having a legit d-1 football program EVERYONE MUST PARTICIPATE. The greeks were just the first to be engaged. I got to experience the Nebraska/aTm game in College Station this last year, and I've got to tell you... The student section there just makes me want more for us. I know we can probably never match their attendance.... But if we can even just fill the student section and get HALF of their intensity, 30 to 35k can be a really fun, loud, and inspiring home field advantage. ALL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS SHOULD BE VISITED.... I THINK that is what Dan is going to try and do. STRENGTH IN NUMBERS MYH FRIENDS... Now, lets all try and recruit an apathetic unt alum back to be an engaged, participating alum. go mean green

No, let's do give Trilli credit for the green seats. People had griped about the orange seats for years.....but it wasn't until Vic got to Denton that anything was done. Joe and I were both on the green seat committee, but the credit rightfully belongs to Vic....on this.

Silver...see the addendum to my post above regarding the Beaches comment. I have no doubt whatsoever that the comment was real and from the heart by Coach McCarney. You could tell by the way he sincerely answered my question about it at last evenings Mean Green Club Happy Hour. I also talked about it a bit more with him in person...no doubt the guy enjoys those movies and quiet times with his wife.

The alumni logo is weak-sauce. It's a hundred other college/high school logos with a star over it. It would be one thing if it existed as the school's logo for a hundred years, but it hasn't. And I'm no fan of the current eagle logos, either, but I'll take them 100 times over the interlocked-N/T/star. Blech. Thanks to this thread, I now know that the reason fans from other schools make fun of us is NOT because we historically stink at football and that they've barely heard of us. It's because we don't do a proper eagle claw.

How would the GMG family feel about GOMEANGREEN.COM name tags ? I envision a green plastic tag with a magnetic backing with one's GMG name and the member's real name. I go to events and later hear of other GMG members being at the same event but I have no idea who some of you are. On the other hand, do most of the GMG members perfer to be invisible ? to be able to voice opinions or ideas that they'd rather not be associated with in person ? Just a thought. i don't disagree with nader. athletes generally only help the country with entertainment value, whereas music, merit scholarships lead to other occupations which actually help out the community, be it teachers, researchers, etc. i would hate to see this happen, but it makes a bit of sense. it's not just about kids getting an education, it's about kids helping out the community and making it better.
