  1. I think this is a very polite and rationed statement. For a high school student.

  2. And it might just offer a small paradigm change for a group of privileged student athletes. These dudes workout this hard to stay alive. Literally. So after a tough workout and you head to the training room for treatment, then to the caf for some food and then your room later, all in A/C and first class facilities, these guys are sweating their asses off in the shit holes of the world, eating freeze dried crap and sleeping on cots and all the while will get no glory like a fall Saturday afternoon.

  3. Most of you already know about the "University of North Texas" and diving eagle being finished on the stadium. Coming from 35, north of campus, you can see it nicely from a few miles out and the stadium from even further. And this morning, I was greeted by a large red truck and HMMWV with the USMC sabre on the side of each, with a US flag and USMC flag in the middle of the practice field. There something between 6-8 Marines out there today giving our team the run through in some different workouts.

  4. okay, first of all, i was active duty USMC 1st light armored recon division '95-'99. secondly, MAYBE 1 or 2 of these athletes will go on to be in the pros. MAYBE. the rest will go on to who knows what. there's always a need for commissioned officers in the corps, and you never know what lasting impressions might be left on these young men. secondly, MAG (Marine Air Group) 41 is stationed at carswell JRB in fort worth along with a few other non-combat reserve units. thirdly, while i was in the marine corps, i was assigned to recruiter assistance duty for about a month in the D/FW area. my per diem was exactly $0. i have no idea where you got this $200 a day figure. in conclusion, what if their "normal responsibilties" are in fact recruiting? time/money well spent? they could just be a group of area recruiters. in the USMC when your assigned to be a recruiter, that's all you're assigned to do. you have no other normal responsibilty. trust me, this isn't two moonlighting tank crews out yucking it up with some college athletes. just hearing the words 'marine corps' and 'per diem' in the same sentence sounds really funny together. maybe officers get some sort of per diem. i wouldn't know, i worked for a living while i was an active duty marine. somehow, i seriously doubt any of these eight marines were officers.

  5. The team was under the impression that the workout today was just going to be a light workout. Surprise!! A few quotes from players after this morning "Light" workout. "That was freakin BRUTAL!" You really had to see the kids face when he said this! "I have a completely new respect for those guys after going through one of their workouts and we didn't even complete it!" "I've never seen so many people tossing their cookies at one time" The Marines were all active duty but the vast majority were volunteers on their off day. Sounds like they were based out of Arlington, not sure about that information.

  6. I think you'll find most Coog fans to be friendly and reasonable, especially if you're friendly and reasonable. If you're a jerk, especially on an opponent's site, you can expect the same to be returned. There will be exceptions as there are with every fan base, but if you show respect with Coog fans, you'll get it from most in return.

  7. You should see what they're doing. It's a lot of conditioning workouts that I didn't see them run last season, and it's all run at a quicker pace, too. The great part about a lot of these drills, all of the resistance is either from the player's own weight or from the weight of another player. These aren't just laps run around the field, it's body drags, teamed pushups, shoulder carries, and all sorts of endurance and strength work. After the Carey release, this also shows how serious our new staff is about getting these guys conditioned and motivated for the next season. I recruiting tool or not, a change of pace in workouts and change of intensity is usually good.

  11. What about "Toys for Tots"? That's not necesarily a recruiting tool (unless we're starting to recruit little kids), would you call that waste? As far as recruiting, it could possibly be a recruiting tool as well. As we know, most of these guys will not be playing football professionally. So with their degrees, they could enlist,go to Officer Training, and become an officer in the Marines if they wanted to. Maybe in order to have this workout, the Marines provide a presentation post-practice?

  13. Carey must have used bad judgement in order to get kicked off the team, but I wouldn't call the young man a quitter. I will always be grateful for the wonderful plays he made for North Texas, and I wish him the best with his life. I hope he learns from this moment and becomes a better young man for it. I'm sure McCarney feels the same way.

  15. I respectfully disagree. Coach Mac knew losing Darius would hurt big time. I am assuming he made a principled decision that he felt had to be made. If you are going to have rules and standards, it needs to be made clear that all players must abide by those rules and standards. Point made.

  16. A good friend and UT ex who was well connected at with the program there told me this later on. He said that when one of the refs was asked about the call, the ref winked and said that Cash was in the end zone by this much.....as he made a hook-em sign!

  17. If you're not going to answer the questions from other people asking you to list sources besides the nebulous internet, aren't you just as guilty of grandstanding/obstructing the issue/being insane? You cant write a term paper and cite the library (and if you can, I'm kind of pissed to just be learning this now.) We're just notseeing what you are... To paraphrase the great SilverEagle, you're getting out-talked.

  19. What Barry Switzer used to say about option: "If it's blocked perfectly, the man with the ball only has the Monster Man (safety or inside lb, depending on the defense) to beat on the way to the end zone." But, you could probably say that about any play. A good run game is fun to watch, though. OU got a taste of it from West Virginia in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl: What can a fullback do for you? Fullback Owen Schmitt scores What can a fullback do for you? Fullback Owen Schmitt blocks

  24. There is the Carswell Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, so it likely the Marines came from there. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I think the units based at Carswell JRB are: Marine Air Group 41 Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234 Marine Fighter/Attack Squadron 112 14th Marine Regiment 8th Marine Corps District

  25. We're going to find out in a hurry what kind of coaching staff we have. Do we have one that will make excuses? Or, do we have one that takes lemons and makes lemonade? Personally, if the offense is ticking along, I don't see how Carey's 37 or so catches from a year ago aren't replaced. The 3-star tight end, and the 6-5ish receiver signed in February should be able to help make up. With or without Carey, though, the truth about the 2011 offense remains the same as before - will the OL coach be able to get his young charges to create enough holes to make Dunbar the constant threat that will force defenses to commit a safety to play up to stop the run, thereby opening up the pass game a little more? You've got to look back and see how McCarney did it at Iowa State. He had 2,000+ yard rushers. This is a coach who will let a tailback take the ball 30-40 times a game and win ugly. I really don't give a flying fark how it's done, as long as we start winning. A team isn't made of one player. These are a different breed of coaches than we've seen at anytime since Hayden Fry was here. And, I still say this is the Belt, and the climb from the bottom isn't steep. As Howard Schnellenberger has famously said, "The only variable now is time." Damn right, Howard! Sun Belt...get ready for your beatings! Uglyball is back in Denton to wear your asses out one rush at a time on offense, one hard hit after another on defense, and a vicious, relentless, and efficient special teams to knock your dicks fully in the dirt when the clock hits four zeroes! Adios, Carey. One player does not a team make. KA-TANGA!

  28. I think now we see why McCarney is so controversial on the Iowa State board. He did things there that no one had done before but he did it sandwiched between some pretty miserable seasons. There are some interesting parallels here.

  29. Remember when Dodge took over and Fitz was put in a role that blossomed? I think we'll see one or more of those with the switch to DMac now. Certainly hope so. It might be an interesting research project for any stat-heads on the board. Look up coaching changes across FBS the last 2 - 5 years and look for breakout players in year 1. Out of curiosity, did we have any surprises in DD year 1? I arrived in 1999.

  33. Hey...we do have that former 3-star tight end now, Andrew Powers. Looks like it'll be go time for him from Game 1! Tight ends...in courting, marriage, and football, they're important. Another note: Doesn't it seem crazy that with all the hoopla surround Todd Dodge after his hire that the positions we're now thin at are QB and WR? Crazy, man. Well, all kidding aside, it's good to see legitimate tight ends on the roster. The kid from Mansfield who switched his commitment from Tulsa to us just a few days before signing day, Chaz Sampson, will have a chance to show his stuff early According to online roster, our other choices of receiver in 2011: 84 Brown, Greg WR 6-1 232 Sr. Grand Prairie, TX (Grand Prairie HS) 81 Bynes, Christopher WR 6-1 220 RJr. Lauderdale Lakes, FL (Coffeyville CC) 4 Carey, Darius WR 5-10 188 Jr. New Orleans, La (Helen Cox HS) 80 Chancellor, Brelan WR 5-9 168 So. Copperas Cove, TX (Copperas Cove HS) 17 Johnson, Breece WR 6-1 187 Sr. Colleyville, TX (Heritage HS) 23 Marshall, Mike WR 6-0 195 Fr. 34. I love the ambition, but focusing our limited advertising resources in D/FW makes the most strategic sense. The billboards in D/FW could put butts in seats, immediately. A billboard in Houston or El Paso might not generate a single return. I agree that more exposure for the brand is necessary on a regional level, which could be better organized and executed via Google or Facebook advertising, but is ultimately achieved by success on that level. The billboards are specifically put up to try and garner attention for the football team, our new stadium and the new experience therein. Trying to get folks from other cities to buy into that, when each has their own local experience to offer, is a tough sell. Even 3 hours away in Houston. And why we would focus on Amarillo at all? There's as many people in Lewisville, Flower Mound and Highland Village, and those are just 3 suburbs of the Metroplex. You want even more recognition on a regional level, beat the teams that reside in each of the major cities you listed, except Amarillo of course. I like the billboards, think they're a great way to reconnect with the 75,000+ alumni in the D/FW area and it seems they're not just peppering, but saturating the market, which will put fans in the seat and generate new interest in our new experience. We're the 3rd largest school in the state and arguably the most affordable. I think you overestimate how many people have barley heard of us. Kudos to the AD or whoever's responsible for the billboard campaign, I think it's well done.

  35. Where did he really attack your family? You brought your family into the discussion, and then he said if your son believes the crazy nebulously cited "internet history", then he would also be wrong. I don't consider it attack on someone to say they are wrong, maybe some with a "revisionist" view of the word attack may think otherwise.

  37. Yall are confusing leaving UNT early with academic performance. But it's not. I don't believe that UNT offers a degree where he could land a guaranteed multi-million dollar contract. Economics, plain and simple. If UNT can help him improve his draft stock; then he will stay longer (still economics). Once he hits the point of diminishing returns (by staying); then he will leave. Still economics.

  38. Hopefully the new coaching staff in the new stadium will make enough noise come football season, that Brett can stop subtly beating the many times over dead Todd Dodge horse and start writing about things that are/will happen with the program going forward. Doesn't seem healthy for anyone involved to get into the resulting pissing matches over past coaching staffs. Coaching staffs come and go, but everyone here, for better or for worse, is affiliated with North Texas until the shovelfuls of dirt start flying down from six feet up. Continually allowing the past to drive a wedge into the fan base is...wait for it...baseless.

  45. I think it's as bad as you make it out only if we had lost Lance. Not saying this doesn't hurt, it absolutely does. Carey averaged 3 catches per game. That's not irreplaceable. If Stratford has one more catch per game, he equals that output last yr. And we still return 2 of our top 4 receivers from last yr, Stratford and Dunbar. Coupled with better depth at QB than we've had in a while, Osburn played last yr, along with a recruited TE, I don't think we'll be as woeful or inept as it's made out to be. This year was going to go as Lance went and in my mind nothing changes much there. We still have one of the top backs in the nation which the K State defense couldn't stop with 9 in the box. Carey was the one guy besides Lance last year that showed game changing ability. Someone else gets their shot to shine now.

  46. always personal attacks....you should use some of your energy to humble yourself to look up the information. the difference between you and posters like Silver Eagle, Screaming Eagle and EulessIsMore is that they engage in intellectual conversation and no personal attacks on members and their families. You, CBL, have a history of attacking the person instead of the post.....we call it "Intellectual Bankruptcy." I would much rather sit down and have burgers and beer with Silver, Screamin', and Euless knowing that the conversation would be civil than someone like you who would degerate into personal attacks when they discover that they are wrong. Perhaps one day you will learn that lesson.
