Smu's Save The Coach's Job Schedule

This practice should be prohibited by each school! After firing previous coach Jimmy Tubbs after only 2 seasons (47-50) SMU is clearly trying to save face with a ridiculous schedule for Matt Doherty. Tubbs was extremely popular with Dallas area coaches and was never given an opportunity to build the program. SMU expected Tubbs to land the McDonald's All-American candidates from the area without any additional support. The reason given for the firing was for paying for lunch for 2 players and providing a half of cup of laundry detergent to another. After hiring Doherty, SMU immediately upgraded its facilities, paid him 3 times more for a longer term. Recruiting is going much better for the Ponies. After 4 years of failure though, not sure why recruits would want any part of such a B.S. schedule and the uncertainty of a coach clearly on the hot seat:

I know this is not UNT related but it's a damn shame they could not have at least squeezed UNT into the prestigious SMU Invitational!

Schedule should be embarassing to any SMU fan! Awful.....

It's embarassing, but we've all known it was coming since the end of last season. It's simply an effort to put up wins and manufacture momentum. They won't draw anyone OOC,nor do they care, but if they clean up that schedule, the frontrunner students and alums may show come conference time. No one is going to care who they beat, if they actually beat people. Beyond that, manufacture enough garbage wins and SMU will attempt to buy their way into the CBI or whatever.

Also, they are putting a completely new offensive & defensive system in this year, which requires real execution, and they don't have the right personnel yet. What's funny is that it took Doh 4 full years to find a system that may work at SMU, and its not even his primary system. He had to hire Mangino, a 4 out 1 in expert, and Doh had to relinquish control of the O & D to him. A pretty wild situation, if you know anything about what a control freak Doh has been in the past. His reality is that he's recruiting full time now, specifically out west, and Mangino is running the team. That could be a far better look, but who knows.

The schedule won't look like that forever, and it's frustrated many an SMU fan, but wins & recruiting are the bottomline, not RPI or SOS right now. Hopefully that'll change soon

FWIW, I understand why Cooley started this thread and obviously have no problem w/it, but quit w/the Tubbs junk. Jimmy was a stop-gap hire b/c the search flailed, he pleaded, and DISD backed him publically. Nobody at SMU expected Jimmy to deliver McD AA's cause he'd never done it in the past, either at SMU or OU. He was a very overrated recruiter on Dements bench, and to get kids like Sasser & Davis, SMU had to give them both the green light and control. SMU has never made a living off DISD, so to think Tubbs would change that is silly. Like SMU was just gonna grab Darrell Arthur or whomever, just b/c Tubbs was coach? Nobody believed that, and there was no history to suggest it was even a possibility.

Straight up, Tubbs was scape-goated and I'm the first to say it, but he wouldn't have made it beyond year 3 w/o the 'burgers and cheer' incident anyway. He was a fine man, good person, and a solid assistant, but he was over his head behind the scenes at SMU. He was holding on really tight and his health was effected from Day 1. Doh can't seem to get it done on the court, but he has many of the Park Cities heavies in his pocket. That's why Doh got facilities upgrades that Tubbs never would have come close to getting. Beyond that, Orsini was hired as AD right around the 'Burgers & Cheer' incident. Of course he wanted to put his own stamp on the program
