New Te Coach - John Pont

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know anything on our new TE's coach?

All I can find on him is that he is a Graduate Assistant and that he was formerly at Northern Alabama under coach Bowden.

As a graduate assistant, does he actually coach the TE's? Or is he more of an understudy to Lefty/Hines in developing as a TE coach?

This is just a guess but since the coaching staff is filled with the legal number of assistants we likely added him as one of the two GAs allowed. There are no specified duties for a graduate assistant. Often they film practices and assist other position coaches but I believe that they can also be a position coach as well.

Graduate assistant is no longer the term, it is restricted earning coach. Recent thrend is for experienced coaches that don't need the income or willing to work for little or perhaps are paid through other means to to get these positions.

As of last year it was still known as graduate assistant. The SEC proposed that graduate assistants be limited to no more than seven years coaching experience which I believe passed. I couldn't find anything about a restricted earnings coach being a part of the NCAA.

Unless they have changed, and that is very possible; they are or were referred to as restricted earning coaches. The Graduate Assistant title is still in common use whether that is official or just continued use of the older terminology.

No matter what the proper name there are a lot of debates and proposals such as the one you cited trying to curtail the use of employing veteran coaches in these positions. Graduate assistants positions were developed as a type of sports internship usually for students in post graduate programs at the universities but evolved into a limited earnings position by NCAA statue that can be filled by anyone.
