North Texas a favorite in men’s hoops race

North Texas head coach Johnny Jones will be in an unfamiliar spot this season.

The floundering team he took over five seasons ago is a favorite in the race for the Sun Belt Conference West Division title. UNT finished in a tie for second in the preseason coaches' poll with New Orleans and received four first-place votes, more than any other team in the division except UNO.

The Privateers received five first-place votes. Arkansas-Little Rock, which pounded UNT in the conference tournament last season, was picked to win the division.

The UNT women were also picked to finish second and received one first-place vote.

The Mean Green had three preseason all-conference selections. Kendrick Davis and Calvin Watson were first- and second-team picks on the men’s team, respectively. Talicia Sanders was a third-team pick on the women’s team.

Make no mistake, the talent is there for this team to do great things. It is completely up to the coaching staff to make it happen now. If the team doesn't win either the regular season conference or tournament championships and make it to one of the post season tournaments, as well as dominate the pathetic OOC schedule, then changes need to be made.

JJ needs to win 20 games and make the final of the SB conference tournament, or he needs to go(provided we don't have tons of injuries or something).  Prferably we'll goto the NCAA or NIT to top the year off.

See football situation across the street to answer in your mind whether or not less than 20 wins this season will get the man the door.

No, slightly different situation. At least Dickey has won something. Four conference titles in the Sunbelt may not seem like much, but it's something(plus the one NOB win). Jones hasn't won anything. Not even a division title. We haven't even made the finals of the conference tournament once.

Wrong again....Dickey won a title by his 5th season. Hell as pathetic is it was we almost had a share of the Big West title his 1st year at 3-8. And we would've won the tiebreaker, and probably gone bowling! laugh.gif

Jones has already been here since 2001-2002(so 5 full seasons) without sniffing anything.

Sunbelt basketball has always been better than Sunbelt football. (Dickey's teams won the league with less members and start ups (To D1 football)

Sunbelt basketball has also been ranked much higher nationally than the worse that is, Sunbelt football.

Jones' team will be better in 06-07 but should clearly be the favorite to advance to the Big dance in 07-08

Great so your saying we have to wait another year again, same old song and dance we heard last year about Jones team, alittle tired of hearing we will be great next year, what about this year, then worry after April for 07-08.
