  3. I’m not falling for the sob story presented by the owner/family and the SubHub faithful. All of the properties in this area were complete eyesores, and it looks like they haven’t spent a dime on maintenance or improvements in at least 20 years. The same went for Sack and Save, and the adjacent shopping center. The North Texas Blvd/I-35 junction is the front porch for the university, and it will be greatly improved with the removal of SubHub, IHOP, etc.

  4. And I am not sure what national championships MWC teams have won recently. You said “other sports than football” so I did not know you only meant revenue sports (which for G5 is likely none). In addition to the above bolded of course. But yes I am aware MWC schools have done well in other sports and in football. But I still stand by my original statement that Rice is the better opponent for NT and most of its fans. Most causal fans don’t know much about SDSU but they do about Rice. Plus they will not stay up late on a school night to watch us no matter the opponent.

  5. Rice. It wasn’t so long ago they won a natty in baseball plus their academic reputation alone is worth it.

  6. Every now and then Rice gets their shit together. If the two teams in question were equal in value, Rice wins IMO because of proximity and their history they have from the SWC. SDSU doesn't really appeal to me much, except I have been to a game (versus UTEP) at Qualcomm. The stadium is humonguos. But, like Fouts, you feel like you're a mile away from the field. They do lay claim to Marshall Faulk, though. We can still root for locals, right? Texas football is simply better when Rice is competitive. EDIT: Follow up thought on SWC: after going to a Rally House recently, I am amazed at how that SWC culture still hangs around. That conference clearly lingers on the minds of the 35+ year old fan. I am no fan of MWC, but I also think we are on the same sinking ship in this sea of realignment, and Judy is the worst captain I've ever seen. Worse than Karl Benson? That is a topic worthy of discussion. Anyway yeah, root for Texas schools. We are all better off for it.

  7. In the event the American Athletic Conference(AAC) brings in BYU to replace UCONN, will the AAC claim P5.5 status?

DeAndre Torrey, North Texas Loren Easly’s injury early in the 2018 campaign opened the door for Torrey to receive more snaps as the year progressed. The former junior college prospect finished the season by recording at least 130 yards in four out of his final five games. Overall, Torrey collected 977 yards and 15 touchdowns over 175 attempts and recorded 25 receptions for 205 yards and two scores. Other conference notables include Spencer Brown, Benny LeMay

  11. Crazy to think that where we were is better than where we are. It's almost starting to be turned into an insult to the Belt to claim ourselves as the Belt 2.0.

  12. I don't know how many of you spend time on the C-USA board, but I do, and it's commonly pointed out that C-USA is the worst of the FBS conferences. The days of Houston and UCF are gone. Conference USA is now the Sun Belt 2.0 and the new Sun Belt is actually a higher rated conference by most analyses. I am happy to play other Texas schools as much as anyone, but when those Texas schools are UT offspring schools (UTSA and UTEP) it just gives off a very small-time vibe and Rice just isn't committed to a winning football program. I'd much rather be in a stronger conference whose name actually commands some respect from causal fans. C-USA is a doormat conference and I know that we haven't even won it yet, which also makes us a doormat, but if we're talking about bettering our athletics programs, the Mountain West is a big step in the right direction. Away attendance is a small factor, in my opinion. For those advocating C-USA over the Mountain West, is C-USA the conference we want to be associated with? It can be argued whether or not the Orlando Sentinel and other publications are accurate in their predictions and evaluations, but the point is, this is how our conference is perceived, and perception is extremely important. Is this the best we can hope for? Average Orlando Sentinel Countdown Ratings Per Conference (As of 7/3/2019) SEC 32.21 PAC-12 42.33 B1G 46.04 BIG-12 47.20 ACC 48.32 AAC 71.09 MWC 79.62 SBC 93.05 MAC 98.33 C-USA 99.64

  13. It was on GMG at the end of FB season last year...wasnt CUSA West the next to the lowest rated conference with the east right above??? And all those Apogee sellouts too! I guess if we want to remain in mediocrity....hey we're here!

  14. Easy way to solve all this talk.. Go out this year beat both SMU, and Houston. And while we are at it.. Take down Cal.

  17. BYU has its own network program[think of a smaller Longhorn network] and is not going to give it up. It is important to the Mormons to have a venue in which to spread the good news. In addition, all other sports are played in the West Coast Conference, which is made up of denomination based members which they view as acceptance of their religion.

  18. I am talking money sports. Other sports don't come close to moving the meter like basketball and football. SDSU has made some noise in basketball, but I speculate that Rice's SWC history carries more weight around here than anything SDSU brings. And Rice's academic recognition has the runaway win. EDIT: does endowment come into play when conference's are looking at school membership? Cuz, you know, Rice's is HUGE.

  22. MWC or AAC, to the best of my knowledge NT has not been invited to either one. It's off season, and hypothetical conference scenarios abound. It is great to dream, but I want NT to dominate CUSA in every sport. That is at least possible and will definitely lead to better things.

  24. My issue is that NY Sub has known this was coming for years and years and just sat there. This will be good, free publicity for them and they will eventually move and be fine if everyone that is whining about this goes and supports the new location. Honestly, I would rather see UNT give NY Sub the spot that the stand alone Starbuck's is slated for.

  25. Agree with @Cerebus, and while I dug all those places FFR mentioned (I hit the Pickup at least twice a week), every time I'm up on campus these days I'm amazed at all the cool new food options all over the place. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like there are waaaaaay more options today and an infinitely better food scene than there was when I was kicking around in the late 90s.... I feel like maybe it's not that "Denton has gone corporate and soulless and i have to go to the other side of town to eat," and more "I miss MY specific slice of nostalgia" here.... which is understandable, I just feel like it's a pretty solid scene up there with a ton of character. Like, more places than I have the time to try.

  26. Temple fan here - PennLive is not a local paper, and the writer is a PSU writer that constantly puts down Temple. Absolutely zero chance Temple leaves AAC - they’re actually successful in football and enjoy being in the conferences.

  28. Just a few quick points to summarize. 1) Nobody cares about football performance when making conferences. Just ask Tulane. Or UTSA. Or Coastal Carolina. Or SJSU. 2) Academics are a little different, because money, faculty and conference standards are a thing. Just ask Tulane. Or Vandy. Or Rice. The list of top schools which haven't been poached by MWC/AAC is very small - FIU, Rice, SoMiss, UNT and UTEP. 3) Am I missing something because I'm pretty sure SDSU is a credit union? 4) If TV markets drive the next wave of realignment again (which is looking increasingly unlikely), then whosoever holds the MWC's contract at the time has to go North and Northern if they want to expand. 5) Budgets are beginning to become more problematic for everybody. Idaho and UConn are a beginning, not an end. 6) I remember the 2000s. After playing in a glorified colander, the number 2 reason given why we didn't have good attendance was because of our conference, and after building Apogee, the number two way of improving it was to play Texas teams. 7) MWC would double our annual take. At the cost of sending bowling to Honolulu. We'd probably end up spending more than we'd make.

  29. I tell you what, most of the youngsters I’m around at youth sporting events have no flipping clue what the SWC is or was. Mention Big12 or SEC and their eyes light up. The southwest conference died over 20 years ago. It means very little to any relevant current or upcoming athletes. Not trying to poke you in the eye, just giving you my opinion.

  30. So, the rub on CUSA west is that the other Texas teams suck ass right now, but they get people to come out because fans know who they are and they bring people to Apogee even if they suck now. This alone makes CUSA waaayyyyy better than the SBC was for us. But that is no reason to just stay in this league if we even have a chance to move up to the MWC. That’s really the big difference between being content as a lower G5 program or moving up to being an upper G5 program.

  35. The problem is that if we lose to SMUt that could drive down attendance for UH.

  36. Exactly. I expect the Houston game to be our first ever sell out at Apogee. Winning in front of a sell out crowd would be a milestone for our program.

  40. Looks like he wasn't going to get much action if he stayed at ASU. From https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2019/05/23/asu-football-cornerback-dominique-harrison-enters-transfer-portal/1207600001/ Maybe he has the means to pay for school on his own and would rather get some playing time on an exciting team and any offers he got weren't to places that were of interest. Also, if he's not planning on finishing grad school, he's only looking at 1 semester of 12 hrs. plus living expenses for 6 months.

  45. I actually think Houston and SMU might not be as disagreeable to us being in the AAC as some here think. Lets get down to brass tacks. Games between the three schools would garner better attendance and TV viewership than most of their schedule. The close proximity of the three schools would help reduce travel expenses and allow those funds to be used elsewhere. Now that UNT is good in pretty much every sport we will not lower their strength of schedule that much. So are their fans not excited to have us? Yes. But I think leadership views us more positively.
