  1. Why put Brices photos with these guys? To the best of our knowledge he had nothing to do with the prostitution ring. I feel really bad that his name is getting drug through the mud.

  2. Why is Army looked at as such a great draw for fans? Looking at last year's road games for them, the average crowd was 64% of capacity of the stadiums they played in, with 4 of 6 games under 60%. While there may be some draw for diehard football fans, I don't think the casual fan is going to feel that same draw to an Army game. Note: This is not me saying Liberty is going to draw well either. I'm just trying to understand the strong feelings about Army in particular.

  7. The date for this year's HOD Bowl has been set for Dec. 26th. Time not set as yet. Lockheed Bowl in Ft. Worth set for Dec. 23rd with a 2:30pm kick. I am hoping for the Ft Worth option this year. Just because it's a different Bowl and I like the date better for pre-game activities, etc. But, either would be great. Hit 7! Or.....more!

  8. The bowl game was unlikely to have an impact in recruiting for last season. Most of the recruits it would have helped with were already committed by the time we played in the game. I look for the bowl game to help with recruiting in our current cycle. Early returns suggest that it has helped, but time will tell the whole story.

  9. Some people feel supporting the military academies as a way of supporting the military in general. Having talked to fans who do come to NT games when we have an one of the academies as an opponent, almost all of them have or know someone who served or is serving in that branch.

  10. For the life of me I don't see how swapping Army for Liberty will bring a P5 to Apogee. Even if it does I don't think trading a winnable Army game for a home loss to a P5 is a good thing. Add to that the fact that I don't like being on the same continent with Liberty, much less the same field. And I certainly don't want to visit them.

  11. Being in a masterplan and making it happen are two different things. The Liberty series, as I understand it, is the first step in a multiple step process. It appears Baker would have preferred to announce all the changes at once. They didn't say it was physically taxing. They referred to the injury problem caused by Army's cut blocking scheme along their offensive line. Be factual, don't twist meanings to fit your opinion.

  13. It's a wonder Army is able to get anyone to play them :-(. EDIT: I got i!. Our OOC scheduling strategy should be to play whoever Army played the week before. They will be so unprepared for us, they won't know what hit 'em.

  15. Good news for both us and the league. I didn't realize only three places submitted bids and from that list I'm not at all surprised it's going to the Star.

  17. So far that's not a problem as the AAC is tied with the MAC for teams in the access bowl. I notice no single team has repeated yet, either.

  18. If the SMU official attendance was 22,127, you know that there may have been 5,000 actual butts in the seats. So much for all those Liberty fans that might be attending the NT game.

  19. So far, the auto bid has gone to Western Michigan (MAC), Houston (AAC), Boise State (MWC), Northern Illinois (MAC), and Central Florida (AAC). It would really help our league a lot if we could get a team in that slot. Because right now, the college football media and fans look at the SBCUSA as just basically being the same level of teams.
    2 points
  20. Exactly. We're trading a team that is an honor to have on schedule for a team that is a disgrace to have on the schedule. Furthermore, having Army at home is the equivalent of a low level P5 at home. You really think Army won't draw more than a Kansas or Kentucky?

  21. Actually the original mean green club was a creation of Hayden Fry. After he left, it was allowed to die and was as pointed out resurrected as a fan based organization. Then again taken over by the AD. Point to ponder, does a new NT support organization need to be established run by the fans? The current Mean Green is little more than a moniker for the fund raising arm of the athletic department. Something independent of the AD, and free to both support and question the direction of NT athletics could be beneficial. As far as I know the current Mean Green club is a misnomer anyway, it is not a club in the sense that it has voted on leadership or does it conduct regular meetings.

  23. ? The coaches weren't coming off a bowl game last year, they were trying to sell a team coming off a 1-win season. The recruiting off the bowl game will be seen in the upcoming class. So far, it looks like we're recruiting ahead of where we were this point last year.

  24. HOD is scheduled to have a BIG12 team this season. If that is the case, I will prefer we go there. If we can finish with a 7 win or better regular season, I could see us taking a very large crowd to face Texas, Tech, TCU, or Baylor in the historic Cotton Bowl. A win against one of those teams, would certainly improve recruiting for us, and place us squarely in the category of rapidly improving G5 programs.

  27. Wren is a very smart guy. Wren is playing his cards right. I too was at the Dallas Coaching Caravan. While there, I was able to talk to several key athletic managers, and coaching staff members. I suggest people should stop ragging on Wren, and the Army games. Wren is securing commitments on games that will impress the Mean Green fans. I would not expect the Liberty games to be on the schedule for long. Army is talking to Liberty too. Recruiting is going very very well right now! The 2018 class will be a great class. Have faith Mean Green fans! Good things are coming our way!

  29. Yes, and the guy who promoted UNT once he transferred. You know, he supported the school he committed to at that time. He didn't announce his transfer and then call every other D1 school soliciting offers. Big difference, at least in my mind. Being a diehard fan has nothing to do with it. Commit, honor that commitment, that is all I ask. If you aren't ready then don't commit. The definition of the word says it all for me.

  30. what if he committed, and at his first day of practice a mysterious dog showed up and watched practice from outside the gate?

  31. I like how you concede that MTSU will be a better program than NT in 7 years and automatically assume NT will not be in a position to move up. Then further this theory by implying NT won't even be in the second group with Rice, etc. and will be destined to the lowest possible league. NT is spending a lot of money for nothing, and apparently has made a bunch of bad personnel decisions if this comes to fruition.

  32. I agree, but why don't we see how this plays out before we all storm the AD?!? The ignorance on this board right now is astounding.

  33. It appears we did a very good job recruiting him and thus he committed to us. It is one thing, in my humble opinion, to have schools continue to approach you about attending their school and totally another to court almost every D1 assistant coach to look at you. In my mind, his commitment means nothing. I prefer the young men, Bryce English for example, that commit to our school and then use their Twitter account to promote the school where they committed. For comparison, I liken this to asking a girl to prom, she accepts, but then approaches every other guy in the school asking them to ask her. Show some character, commit or move along. It is nice having him on board, but I am not counting on him being here in the end.

  34. It sounds like you and everyone else are just pissed we're not playing Army. I'm surprised so many people can't see the logic in this move. We're dropping two games with Army so we can bring a marquee opponent to Apogee in 2019. To balance out the schedule we had to set the home-and-home with Liberty. Yes, they are not the ideal choice, but it cost us ZERO dollars and SHOULD be games we WIN. You can't say that playing Army. Scheduling two one-off games would have cost us money or would have forced us to schedule home-and-home series with two universities, which would kill our scheduling flexibility. This fanbase has been bitching to play big name school at Apogee and now that we have an AD who is making it happen people are bitching because we had to cut two games with Army. You can't have your cake and eat it too. It was either cut the Army series or the SMU series and Wren made the right choice hands down.

  35. Over the last two seasons I have seen him play around eight games for Hebron. He is very talented and definitely looks like a D1 QB. This past season he was the Offensive MVP in district 5-6A. It would indeed be huge if he flips from KU to UNT!

  39. I referred to the quote from the article. Do I have access to the injuries Baker was referencing? Nope, but cut blocking is typically frown upon and is illegal in some leagues. Here is an interesting article from the Houston Chronicle with this even more interesting quote:

  42. Looking at his Twitter, he has reached out to about 20 coaches of D1 schools since his commitment to us. Looks to me like he is looking for a better offer, in his opinion. I am happy he is "committed" to us, but his actions don't reflect his comments above. I also hope he sticks and decides UNT is a great place, but as they say, actions speak louder than words.

  43. You could sub North Texas for Liberty in this thread and move it to an OKST message board and these are the same comments people here would complain about OKST fans making.
    1 point
  44. Totally agree here. BG is right in saying that the comments we have heard so far are words that RV would have said. If Army is deemed too difficult an OOC opponent, we need to just drop down to FCS. Sorry, but Army is usually a bottom quartile FBS team, if not worse. Liberty is FBS in name only...they may be a SBC team, but nobody who follows college football here in Texas will look at them as being higher than SFA or SHSU. And both of those teams would provide MUCH more in fan attendance and even local media attention than us playing a school from Virginia that has very controversial ties to fundamentalist views that aren't exactly aligned with 99% of academia. No matter how you put it, trading Army for Liberty is a horrible decision unless it brings us a HOME GAME with a recognized and regional P5 opponent. If this brings us Wake Forest, Boston College, Washington State, or Oregon State here, the deal is terrible--Army would bring more fans than any of these teams would. If its a Big XII or SEC school, then its probably a better deal for us, unless its an Iowa State or Vandy home game, because, again, Army brings in more fans to a game than either of them would bring here. But if its anyone else in those leagues, its a better deal for us in the end and I will praise Wren Baker for a playing chess while everyone thinks he's losing at checkers. But for those of you who blindly place their trust in this place, you are either ignorant of our history, you just believe in Mean Green unicorns and don't want to believe we would make a bad deal, or you just love being a masochist.

  46. Count me among those choosing to trust Wren when he seems to clearly indicate that both Liberty and Army are the initial steps in a process he's taking to reshape the schedule I don't understand the need to evaluate these moves as if they're in a vacuum - part of the draw is that Liberty would seem to have greater date flexibility than would Army. I'm expecting these moves were made based on a greater need to accommodate a to be announced series. I can also appreciate the consideration given to our coaches/players needs regarding the schedule. We lucked out in 2016 to have off dates immediately before each Army game.

  47. I sure like the title of the article: "Texas, A&M, Baylor and others outpaced by Conference USA schools in APR scores" Given that this is now bowl relevant, and well, that it says who keeps their players happy and academically successful, this should be an ok recruiting tool, or rather a good tool for negative recruiting against tech, SMU, Houston and Texas State.
