  1. This year might be important for North Texas but UTSA will graduate a huge class (37?) this year and so the 2015 season will be important for the Runners, at least in my eyes.

  3. I feel like this should scare the pants off the NFL. They are very close to having a new league competing against them and one that you could argue would have more passionate, loyal fans. Perhaps, this leads to the NFL being forced to start its own farm system. And then it becomes a real battle for players.

  5. I don't really think so. Occasionally, you may see a quarterback draw but with the potential talent that we have at running back and the possiblity of a strong receiving corps I think we generally need to stick with our strengths and have the quarterback run only when he sees an opening.

  6. I work for a mobile app developer in Austin and have been trying to reach out to our athletic dept. about creating a mobile app for NT athletics. Attendance is becoming a big concern not only for our university, but for power 5 schools as well. Pac 12 is about to release an app for every one of the affiliated school to help engage fans at stadiums. CUSA and North Texas should be jumping on this bandwagon as well.

  7. Passionate and loyal to a program that stands to lose in this - but ask someone that is a fan in Oklahoma or Nebraska or the other 23 states that don't have a professional football team. Now their school/state can sign unlimited players to make the best team possible. This starts a whole new professional league. (More professional than the SEC already is.) I don't think those fans stop watching or caring.

  8. Honestly, I never understood from the beginning of Apogee why the Fouts deck concept was so hard to bring over. Anybody who was a reasonably serious UNT fan could get access to the deck. If not on your own dime, it was easy enough to find someone who could get you in as a guest. Now obviously, it would be better just to outright sell it throughout the stands. Do it like the cotton bowl and charge, what was it, $7 for a beer. There was zero in game binging.

  12. Instead of looking at the actual roster, I just did a google search for his name and "redshirt." The summary made it look like he'd redshirted, but it turned out another receiver on the same page had. Read the page, not the summary! I was also just corrected by a friend at Baylor. On Baylorfans.com, they are pointing out his own dad is questioning his ability to stay out of trouble. There is at least one more incident besides the three that are in the papers, possibly more. Every rep you give this kid means less reps to develop someone else. Can you count on him to not screw up again because if he does you then have to depend on someone who did not get the practice time and coaching that was spent on the screw up. Yes, work to win now. But work SMART to win now!

  14. If UTSA becomes a perennial top 25 program, that's good for us.The better our conference mates do, the better for us. We just need to keep doing what we're doing and join them as a top 25 program. Think about it, if La Tech and USM return to form, Marshall stays good, and we and UTSA keep improving, CUSA could be a heck of a conference. If UTSA does well and ends up leaving us behind for the Big XII, that would be bad for us, but I don't see that happening.

  15. Back to the topic at hand. I believe that Washington State will be #69. Even if we are #68 that's quite a turnaround from last year. The prognosticators seem to trust that McCarney has turned this program around.

  17. My thoughts exactly. You have your fairly obvious bad seeds like an Aaron Hernandez, and you have young people who screw up and then straighten up. I don't know enough about him to have an opinion either way, but it sure would be nice to have a potential playmaker of that caliber.

  20. Many of us passionate, loyal fans of college football wouldn't be fans at all anymore. . . . It changes the intrinsic nature of what we love about college football. Why would the NFL be afraid of college football that had nothing different to offer from what they do, other than an obviously inferior product?

  32. 6'3" 185 lb athlete, plays quarterback for his school. Also holds offers from Louisiana Lafayette, Indiana, Houston, and Mcneese State. Not sure what position his offers are for, but he's not a bad looking qb prospect. I just don't know if we're going to go with a dual threat type this year. Especially with the type of guys we have at the top of the depth chart, as well as Caleb Chumley coming in, who will supposedly start off at qb. So who knows? 33. if athletes are allowed to be paid for the use of their name, image and likeness. To keep their athletic programs afloat, Banowsky said that many schools within his own conference have been forced to subsidize, in some cases through student fees. "We heard about the possibility of some institutions having to drop football," Remy said. "That's a realistic possibility, if not for the mere fact that they can't keep up in an environment, or because their values don't align with the notion that they would pay a student athlete for the name, image and likeness." http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2014/06/23/ed-obannan-antitrust-case-vs-ncaa-day-11/11266275/

  34. Average attendance record was broke this year at North Texas. Granted averaging low to mid 20's is nothing to hang your hat on. I think with more success the avg attendance will see another rise. I think the kickoff times are affecting attendance myself. The up & comings don't want to sit in the heat for 3 1/2 hours for those 2pm kickoffs.

  35. Maybe . . . but if you are talking about places where the NFL has no presence anyway, what would the NFL have to fear?

  36. If you are just talking about foot speed then (IMHO) the QB's are in this order, Williams, McNulty, Means, Greer, and since he is still on the roster Shanbour. Foot speed is not enough. You have to have good-to-great peripheral vision, the ability to c hange directions pretty quickly, and you must be DURABLE. The best "mobile" QB's I've seen at North Texas, based on the above stated criteria, are (in historical order).. Kenny Washington, quick feet and pretty fast, but he spent too much time running around in circles (Fran Tarkington style) and more often as not, losing yards. He was just barely durable enough to make the list.....just barely. Jordan Case, great footwork and only ran as a last resort. Pretty effective when he did. Joe Stephenson, an equal threat running or throwing. Probably as fast as Washington Greg Carter, quick feet and above average speed. Almost a pure veer QB. Scott Davis. like Joe Stephenson, an equal threat running or throwing. Very durable as he ran the "flying wishbone" while playing QB at NT. Mitch Maher, the surprise was not his running ability, but his passing ability. He was, after all, a "run first" Plano Wildcat QB. The second surprise was how durable he was since he played most of his career at about 180lbs. Scott Hall, the second coming of Jordan Case, but a little faster and with a little stronger arm.....very tough.

  37. I am all about winning, but this guy could be a locker room cancer that has a negative impact on the team despite his talent. I leave this in the hands of the coaching staff to look at the dynamics involved and see what they think can be done. That is, if he is even interested in coming here. If it were strictly up to me, he would come nowhere near my locker room. Either way, he would not contribute at all this season.

  40. Fixed it for you. If it was a one time, out of the ordinary circumstance he would not have been kicked off the team but rather just disciplined. I haven't been able to find out details, but Briles and his staff have decided this young man's downside out weighs his upside as what would be one of the most productive players on the team. All that said, being kicked completely off a team might be enough to wake the young man up. For his sake, I hope so. I'll leave it to the coaches if they want to take the risk.

  43. So, I give a $100 donation and a student gets the seat? Is that right? Anyway we can turn this into something cool? Like, make the kids try out for these 240 seats every year? Give them a jersey and a spot as the rowdiest UNT fans alive? Or, are no students allowed in those seats no matter what we do?

  45. But seriously, when I heard of this this morning, I had no idea that the power of law could cancel a trademark for being offensive. I had always been under the impression that only social change or organizational policy like the NCAA could force a change like that. Still not sure how I feel about this being a legal matter. Now as to the name itself, Redskins isn't like Illini or Seminoles or Fighting Irish or even Indians. It's not even like changing the name of the Cowboys to the Dallas Rednecks. There are plenty of people in DFW who walk around every day proudly proclaiming themselves rednecks. I've never been up to Oklahoma and heard anyone refer to themselves as a redskin. Redskins is akin to the Raiders changing their name to the Oakland Niggers. A term that has nothing but derogatory meaning and whose time has long since come and gone.

  46. That's huge. A commitment would be big in multiple ways. Shocking to me that he has no other offers, playing in arguably one of the top 5 football hotbeds in the country in Atlanta. His film is very impressive IMO. He has good size and good speed/agility, in part evidenced by his coaches moving him to linebacker. I think Kelly would make a very good jack linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, but he could definitely be a good end in a 4-3 for us.
