  1. I was told Tony was 1 of 20 college players that got invited.

  2. The "star" system was created and now managed by a group of people who never stepped on a college football field and most on a high school field. One of the best QB's I have ever seen was rated 3 star...barely and NO ONE in Texas except UNT offered him. He is now at Michigan and will be the heir to Denard. Star system is for boosters to measure the success of the football team. Wins are the way the coaches measure the success of a football team.

  3. If McCarney and his staff are as good as Corky Nelson was in identifying and developing "under the radar" talent, then we are going to be much better off than we've been in a long time. I really don't give a damn about the star system. It doesn't rate what is really important....which is a player's gut desire to get better every year.

  4. To me, that's sort of a yes and no. We aren't winning many recruiting battles thus far. We had about five or six three-star recruits last year and none so far this year. Yet, I think that this staff can develop the talent that we are getting far in excess of those in the last ten years. And, who knows? Maybe this 'under the radar' talent is actually better than the so-called experts predict. It carried TCU for several years. So, it's important to get better talent than your competitors but it's more important to develop what you do get.

  5. This is good stuff... I think they are taking the best players available and committing to UNT. I am starting to think that along with a good coaching staff at UNT comes molding your plan of attack to what your strengths are... I am gonna bet that with O line obviously a priority, we might actually have a healthy QB for more games...and have a running game that can compete. Against those bigger programs, depth and wearing down is what causes the smaller programs to wilt if you happen to have some sort of a miracle lead... depth in the o-line might help tremendously with the potential for an upset... obviously we need the same sort of depth up front on the d-line... we'll see... I bet with this type of depth, Chico can do some pretty decent things too... what have we bitched about for the past 8 years, we need to recruit size and speed...well, the size is there...maybe not "top end" type of commits, but this is size and hopefully coachable kids with motivation/work ethic. I trust in DMAC until it is proven we shouldn't at this point. last season bought some serious faith equity... Love the size.

  7. I wonder if maybe they see a player who projects at DT in one of these 4 o line commits all at least 6'5 260+. Given their height, probably not but maybe one of these big bodies can also play DT, that would be great.

  12. Texas VS Texas A&M ≠ Auburn VS GA Tech. Texas VS Texas A&M ~ Auburn VS Alabama. Could you imagine Auburn VS Alabama going away? Believe it or not, Texas VS Texas A&M is probably bigger than Texas VS Oklahoma... and there is not a school in the SEC that Aggie fans would rather beat more than Texas. That will never, ever change because you have never seen "traditions" before until you've seen the Aggies.

  13. Give that guy a RS and a weightroom and he could very well turn out to be a real monster for us. Looks to have a good motor on him, and he certainly looks impressive on the field as a Junior. Mac & Co. sure are stacking the OL for the future.

  16. At that time was alumni advisor for the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. As a spirit project the fraternity had volunteered to paint Fouts Field...they painted the walls on the inside plus the steps and the railing. It was the first time it had ever been painted. Anyway, we had the radio on through the stadium speaker system as we painted the stadium (it was the same afternoon as the Tennessee game). We thought Mercer was going to have a heart attack on the radio at the end of the game. When the team got home they thought we had painted the stadium to commemorate the victory vs. the Vols.

  17. Should it be the place of the NCAA to govern over something of this nature? It almost sounds like we're asking the NCAA to police something that really does not have very much to do with college athletics other than a college coach having access to a university's facilities. What if none of the abuses took place on university property and the only link between Sandusky and Penn State was a coach of of the football program during the time the sexual abuse took place -- should the NCAA be involved then? Punish those responsible for the cover up; they didn't follow the law by not reporting the abuses to the authorities. I don't see how or why the NCAA should ever be involved in something like this unless it directly involves a university's student athletes.

  20. If several of these new OL guys are redshirted, our current Sophomores to be will be Seniors by the time these 2013 guys hit the field as RS Freshmen. I like the idea. Kind of reminds me of the old days at Nebraska, when their 5th year Senior hogs in the trenches were tossing their defensive opponents all over the field year after year. Mac's originally from that part of the world and maybe that's how he's thinking here.

  22. You're absolutely right about the desire factor. Nothing measures that whether it's Rivals, Scout, ESPN, 247 or anyone else that evaluates talent. It is not quantifiable. You can have the biggest, strongest and fastest at a position and if he doesn't truly give it his best he'll be a bust (at least by premier standards). But, what if the four-star player also has a lot of heart? Advantage, talent. There will be star players that will fail and there will be underrated players that will succeed because recruiting is not, nor can it ever be, an exact science. However, a much greater percentage of four-star players succeed than two-stars mostly because of their talent and work-ethic. If they didn't have the work-ethic they wouldn't be four-star players. Corky Nelson succeeded mostly when he had talent because he was able to get the most from that talent. What if he'd been able to get some of that top talent to come to North Texas? He probably wouldn't have been here very long because the Southwest Conference would've gobbled him up. Dan McCarney and his staff inspire in a way similar or better than Corky and his staff did. I think that SHOSS nailed it when he said that some of these young men will have their status elevated after their senior season and we may have some 3* players in this group. I'm hoping that's the case because I like the size of the players that have been selected. Furthermore, these players will fine-tuned by Coach Wintrich and inspired by the coaching staff. That, I don't worry about. I suppose that I'm just disappointed that we haven't competed directly against some that I'd like to beat both on the field and in the recruiting arena. Also, I have been closely following recruiting for the last few years and most of my board is committed elsewhere. Thankfully, I didn't pay for insider information this year.

  23. Mac is doing what WKU did a couple of years ago - getting bigger. I watched them against UK and LSU last year and they weren't getting pushed around like Bama did us. Their QB alone cost them the UK game. The size issue had to be addressed. Mac is recruiting what he likes - big and physical players.

  28. I was at the Houston and Cal Poly games that year. What many people keep forgetting (or didn't realize) was that (as far as the state of Texas was concerned) the Houston win (28-0) was as big, if not bigger than the Tennessee game. Houston had been (as an Independent) tearing it up and had been admitted to the SWC. They won the SWC title the next year (76) in their first outing as a full member. The Houston game was where we lost Kenny Washington. He was hurt when Houston took a cheap shot at him. In fact, I believe it was their All-American DT Wilson Whitley who piled his fat butt on top of Washington after the whistle had blown. Between that and other injuries (I think in the Miss St. game the next week) we were playing with a 3rd string QB against Tennessee. Considering that no one had ever heard of Cal Poly Pomona, much less knew anything about their football team, it wasn't hard to understand us having a slow start in that game. One thing I remembered about that game was that Cal Poly had the largest OL in the NCAA that year. I think they averaged over 250#. I remember that they had at least one 300# tackle on their team. I remember thinking "geezz this is going to be a freak show".

  29. Everyone that moved advanced or they wouldn't have paid the fee. In a sense there were only two losers...New Mexico State and Idaho. Even if the conference was weakened I don't see anyone taking much of a cut in TV revenue. If you didn't advance; there's an old adage that says you can't lose what you didn't have. The airlines even win as each conference becomes more widespread. Is this a great country, or what?

  30. Actually Fry's plan was to play a lot of games at Texas Stadium; it was to be NT's true home field with only one or two at Fouts. If he has succeeded in the SWC bid, all the conference games would have been at Texas Stadium.

  34. Pretty good for the O. The Line has solid starts now, everyone has at least one season and Fortenberry and Feeley have more, QB solid, Receivers solid, Running Backs weak, TE is solid. The D has some good starts on the line and LBs, but weak in Secondary. We can't lose at LSU! If we get beat up, we all expected that. If we don't, it'll propel us into the rest of the season.

  46. But the thing I want to point out is that none of the abuses involved a student athlete of the Penn State Athletics program. Yes, school athletic facilities were at Sandusky's disposal and administrators at various levels turned a blind eye including Athletic administrators, but still no student athletes were involved. In the case dealing with the Baylor basketball murder it involved a student athlete, so I feel the NCAA was right to step in and levy penalties. Since some of you are out for blood, what kind of penalty should be levied against Penn State? Should it be just the football program or should the women's volleyball team also be punished?
