Spring Walkons

I counted 17 new walkons at the spring game. Ten of those were freshmen whose last experience was high school.

When I first looked at the walkons I thought only Donte Neal, who transferred from Missouri had a prayer of making the 85 man scholarship roster. After the spring game there were a few more that had their name called and look promising.

One of the biggest surprises was WR Chase Baine of Lake Dallas. Baine has had a good spring with several touchdown catches, including one in the spring game. I believe that he has to sit out a year since he played baseball at Sam Houston State. If so, he may very well be rewarded a scholarship next year.

Another transfer, Jamel Jackson, from Northwestern State (LA), may not be very high on the depth chart as a wide receiver but he is super fast, and unless one of the incoming freshmen shows tremendous ability, should make the scholarship roster as a return specialist.

Cole Frazier is a scrapper who gives a great effort from the linebacker spot. He showed up well against other third teamers but he just might have the ability to move up and play ala Chris Hurd.

Another true freshman is Brendon Lamb, who had his name called several times. He is a defensive back from Keller Fossil Ridge. His plays were not against first teamers but stood out nonetheless. He's another that I think has a chance.

Two other possibilities are the sons of former greats. Bryan Lockhart, son of former Dallas Cowboy LB, had a TD catch in the Spring game. Alex Lott, son of former OU quarterback Thomas Lott, ran some good routes and looks like a player. Lockhart transferred from Tyler JC and Lott from Texas Lutheran. They are up against some formidable competition, however, and I think face some long odds.

The other walkon (from last fall) who turned heads was Greg Brown. I didn't remember him at all but he's had a good spring. He had a touchdown catch in the spring game. But again, wide receiver is the most loaded position on the roster. Even if Washington doesn't return, there will be thirteen quality scholarship athletes at that position with only three seniors.

Thanks for the update. As yall know from my past posts I pull for the walkons.

Baine had a great spring , I hate that he has to sit out this fall but the NCAA has their reasons for transfers rules.

Hope he can get some "scout team" time and develop while helping our MEAN GREEN DEFENSE get ready for their games.

Cole Fraizer did look good on th D side.

I wish "The Local Boys" Luck !!!
