There's something to be said for coaching at your alma mater. That pull can be very, very strong. But this isn't Roy Williams leaving Kansas for North Carolina(which is equal in terms of prestige/tradition/etc). And Roy even turned down UNC the 1st time - which is why Matt Doherty ended up there for 3 years.

This is leaving KANSAS for another school in the same CONFERENCE with less tradition.

In the college basketball "name" Hierarchy there's UCLA, Indiana, Kansas, UNC, Kentucky & Duke. Everything else is a step down.

Actually I think Roy Williams even made a step up going from KU to UNC. UNC is a bit more decorated historically.

True, but in that rare air it's like splitting hairs. I believe UNC is 2nd in all time wins and Kansas is 3rd. The Heels do have 5 NCAA titles(and 1 NIT championship in 1971 after it had lost some luster, but was still somewhat relevant) to Kansas's two NCAA titles though. Carolina also has a few more Final Four appearances.
