SL Carroll coach raves about Allen QB

DAMON L. SAYLES / The Dallas Morning News

Quarterback Nathan Dick will graduate in the spring, but Southlake Carroll coach Todd Dodge likes Dick's potential replacement.

Dodge said he was impressed with backup quarterback Stephen Payne, who showed glimpses of greatness in Allen's 38-0 loss. Payne, a 6-3 junior, played most of the game after Dick went down with a shoulder injury.

"He looks more like Vince Young than anybody I've seen lately," Dodge said.

Allen's Dick was injured in that last game. Maybe he was just stating that Allen will be experiencing a lot of Payne when Dick is gone.

Payne's going to have to learn how to carry the ball close to his body if he wants to have any success, in high school or anywhere past that. He holds the ball way out from his body when he runs, and is just a fumble waiting to happen.

That said, he has great size and terrific speed and elusiveness. Don't know much about his arm, but it seemed adequate. For his skill set, I'd say that calling him a poor man's Vince Young is an accurate comparison.
