Patrick Cobbs traded to the Steelers

Recommended Posts

Did New England get a STEAL out of this?

The Patriots get Cobbs for FREE. Free agent...undrafted...et al.

They trade him to Pittsburgh FOR AN UNDISCLOSED DRAFT CHOICE. Patrick went from "no value" to at least a draft pick value.

Way to go Patrick. Now he plays behind Parker, Staley, Vernon Hynes (has some yards in 14 games last year) and Cedric Humes (no stats, possible college player).

Waiting for NFL.com to update the depth chart. Waiting for http://news.steelers.com/ to update too.

So how many NT people does that make who have been Steelers?

Someone smarter than me should add it up...

Patrick will probably the fourth to actually play for the Steelers. The other three were Joe Greene, Chuck Beatty and Ron Shanklin. Melvin Davis was drafted by the Steelers and Scott Davis signed as a free agent but neither made it to the final cut.

This is great news. Now I don't have to follow New England, which was near the bottom of my least favored teams, and enjoy watching him play for Pittsburgh. Does anybody know when their next game can be seen in this area?

I'm lovin' this!!!

The Steelers front office have much love for guys from "Non-BCS" conference schools. They drafted Rothloesberger, Omar Jacobs, and now have our lovable Patrick Cobbs. They recognize talent.

I'm very happy for him!!

Eric Pegram palyed for them, and I believe John Lott was with them for a short time maybe as a replacement during one of the strikes.

Lest we forget Erric Pegram was a starting running back for them in Super Bowl XXX!!!

Steelers Trade for Running Back

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers traded a conditional 2007 draft pick to the New England Patriots today for the rights to rookie free agent running back Patrick Cobbs.

Cobbs (5-9, 210) joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent from North Texas on May 15. He led the Patriots and ranked sixth in the NFL in the preseason with 188 yards rushing on 38 carries (4.9 avg.) and three touchdowns. He caught seven passes for 115 yards (16.4 avg.), including a 57-yard touchdown reception.

Cobbs finished his college career as North Texas' all-time leading rusher with 4,050 yards. He holds the North Texas and Sun Belt Conference career records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns (36), rushing attempts (818) and all-purpose yards (5,255).

I think the stats were prior to last night (after week 3)... He has four now if I remember correctly.

4 total, 3 rushing and 1 receiving so they have it right.

From what I have been reading it looks like the Steelers want to get rid of Staley but wanted some insurance. If Staley doesn't make the cut it looks like Parker and Cobbs 1 and 2.

Another good article here.

Staley's status in doubt as Steelers trade for Cobbs

By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer

September 1, 2006

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Duce Staley's run with the Steelers could be coming to an end following the team's trade for Patrick Cobbs, an undrafted rookie free agent running back who led the New England Patriots in rushing during the preseason.

The Steelers have been seeking another running back as former starter Staley struggled during training camp after missing all but a handful of games last season following knee surgery.

The 5-foot-8, 210-pound Cobbs was a surprise for the Patriots this summer, rushing for 188 yards on 38 carries while averaging 4.9 yards per carry. He had a 92-yard game against the Redskins in a 41-0 Patriots victory, though he was playing against backups.

Adding Cobbs could mean that neither Staley nor seventh-round draft choice Cedric Humes of Virginia Tech will make the Steelers' 53-man roster, which must be determined by 6 p.m. Saturday.

Cobbs, who was acquired for a conditional 2007 draft pick, is a power runner much like Staley, and it seems unlikely the Steelers would keep both backs -- plus third-down specialist Verron Haynes -- behind starter Willie Parker. Parker signed a $13.6 million, four-year contract extension Thursday.

Cobbs wasn't invited to the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February despite leading NCAA Division I-A with a 152.7 yards per game average for North Texas in 2003. He ran for 1,680 yards and 19 touchdowns that season, then missed 2004 after tearing a left knee ligament.

He returned to gain 1,154 yards on 231 carries for six touchdowns last season. After not being drafted, he was planning to sign with Montreal of the Canadian Football League, only to catch on with the Patriots after they invited him to their rookie minicamp.

The lack of height that likely kept Cobbs from being drafted also may have dissuaded a top-tier college from signing him out of high school, even after he led Oklahoma Class 4-A rushers with 2,354 yards and 32 touchdowns at Tecumseh High School.

Staley, the Steelers' starting running back in 2004 until injuring a hamstring after seven games, was being counted on to take over as a short-yardage specialist for the retired Jerome Bettis. Staley was also expected to be used in late-game situations when the Steelers were trying to run out the clock with a lead.

But Staley has looked slow in hitting the line of scrimmage throughout camp, and has not shown the straight-ahead bursts or shiftiness that allowed him to average 101 yards through seven games before getting hurt in 2004.

Because Staley ran poorly in their first three exhibition games, averaging 2 yards per carry, he was given 19 carries Thursday in a 15-13 loss to Carolina. He responded with only 46 yards and had no gain longer than 6 yards. He finished exhibition play with 92 yards on 42 carries, a 2.2 average.

"He needed to run an extended period of time to see if he could sustain it," coach Bill Cowher said.

Earlier in the week, Cowher would not say that Staley had secured a roster spot.
