UTEP gets home & home with the Horns

Recommended Posts

UTEP and University of Texas athletic department officials have reached agreement on a two-year football contract for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

The Longhorns are scheduled to face the Miners in El Paso on Sept. 6, 2008. UTEP will play the return game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin on Sept. 26, 2009.

We probably could not get the Longhorns to come to Denton since they have an annual game in Dallas, but it would sure give us a chance to get some other teams that would be very attractive. Since there is not a new stadium in our near future I guess it is a moot point.

Holy Mackerel. This is huge for UTEP. This is sorta like the ultimate in athletic legitimacy to have the "mighty" UT and defending national champs agree to this.

Looks like the regents are set to approve a $10+ million practice facility for their two basketball teams, too. Supposed to have three gyms and all the other amenities. Pretty impressive. Will be located next to their arena. Of course, somebody is donating all or a lot of the cash.

There are advantages to being geographically isolated and the only show in a pretty good sized town.

The fact that they compete with Tech for recruits in West Texas helped this cause quite a bit. Also, it doesn't hurt that UTEP fans are very loyal; they averaged like 50K a game last year. Even during their down years (which have been many) - they always pull out great numbers - in the neighborhood of averaging 35K a game during 1 or 2 win seasons. Being the only show in town (with the closest real competition about 5-6 hours away) definitely has its advantages.

---Unless things change UTEP doesn't get a lot of players from Midland/Odessa/Abilene/ San Angelo area, North Texas has been getting more players from this area than UTEP. Tech really hasn't had had to compete much with them at all for recruits. Yawl don't seem to realize Midland is just as far from El Paso as it is Fort Worth/Dallas, Abilene is much closer to the Metroplex than El Paso.....that is why we are called Midland, half-way to ElPaso.... West Texas is one big place.

Besides except for the past couple of years UTEP was been one of the NCAA worst teams....they couldn't recruit worth a hoot anyway....Recruit West Texas..lots of good players out here that like to win.

There's something to that. Look at schools like Louisville, Boise State, Fresno State, etc...they're all located in urban areas but not the huge metroplexes loaded with professional teams. They get the benefits of a large population but don't have to compete with a bunch of pro teams or other local schools. Anyway, this is a wake up call. We need to get our new stadium built and FAST because we are starting to really fall behind.

UTEP may have been one of the worst, but so was Boise State at one time too, and both of these schools have passed us up. UTEP has a very nice stadium.
