I just learned from the athletic department that the team will be having a scrimmage on the 23rd (homecoming day). Come on out and watch the team as they get prepared for the upcoming season. For those of you who know nothing about North Texas basketball, here's a rundown of the new recruits.

Frosh

Quincy Williams, F 6-8 215

Younger brother of Sheldon Williams (Duke), who was recruited out of Carl Albert HS in Midwest City, OK. The 2003-04 season saw Williams lead Carl Albert HS to a No. 11 ranking in the state’s final Class 5A poll with an 18-8 record . . . He averaged 17.6 points and 9.5 rebounds on a squad that advanced to the Area Playoffs . . . .Williams also posted 76 blocks, 39 steals and 39 assists as a senior . . . The team captain was named First Team All-Conference and to the Class 5A All-State Team by the Daily Oklahoman.

Michael Sturns G 6-4 175

Recruited out of N. Crowley HS in Crowley, TX. He helped lead North Crowley to a 34-3 record and No. 9 ranking in the final Class 4A poll while being named First Team All-Region, First Team All-District and Academic All-State. He was also a McDonald’s All-America nominee, All-State nominee, a San Antonio Lone Star Invitational All-Tournament selection and a Scott Bagg All-Tournament selection. He averaged 18.3 points per game, which ranked among the top 10 players in the area, on 55 percent shooting. Sturns shot 78 percent from the free throw line, 35 percent from beyond the arc and averaged 3.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game. Despite missing 15 games due to a broken wrist his junior season, Sturns was still selected First Team All-District and was an All-Region nominee.

Juco transfers

Isaac Hines G 6-0 175

Led Collin County Community College to a No. 2 ranking in the final NJCAA Division I poll with a 29-3 record . . . The North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Year averaged 11.7 points, eight rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.4 steals per game as a sophomore. Hines was also named to the All-Region V team, was a Second Team All-America selection and was named the TABC Texas Junior College Player of the Year. In two years with the Express, the team piled up a 52-9 record overall and won two NTJCAC championships. The four-time All-City performer racked up 481 career steals, which ranks as the second most all-time in the nation behind the New Jersey Net’s Jason Kidd. Had offers from Gonzaga and Arizona State before settling on North Texas.

Jeffrey Simpson C 6-8 210

Recruited from Eastern Oklahoma State, Simpson averaged 10.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season, helping lead the Mountaineers to a 22-9 record and to the Region II Semifinals. Simpson shot 58 percent from the field and 62 percent at the free throw line his sophomore season. Simpson was also recruited by TCU, Houston, New Mexico State and IUPUI.

Kendrick Davis G 6-4 181

Ineligible for this season due to NCAA transfer rules, but will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Mean Green.

Out of Clements High School in Sugar Land , Tex. , Davis originally signed with Arkansas and spent his freshman and sophomore seasons playing for the Razorbacks . . . After an exceptional freshman season, Davis came back to average 5.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game in 12.7 minutes per contest as a sophomore . . . He shot .341 from the field, .262 from the three-point line and ranked second on the team in free-throw percentage at .895 (34-38) . . . Davis scored a season-high 19 points twice, against Jacksonville and South Carolina , and posted a season-high four assists in two games as well . . . He put up his best single-game numbers in the outing against Jacksonville , recording four assists, four rebounds and one block to go along with his 19 points . . . He reached double figures in the scoring column six times, including a 10-point effort in 12 minutes against nationally-ranked Mississippi State . more
