Atkinson Fires 66 To Lead The Texas Amateur After The First Round

THE WOODLANDS, Tex. - North Texas golfer Zach Atkinson fired an opening round of 66 to take a two-shot lead in the Texas Amateur at The Club at Carlton Woods. Atkinson shot a bogey free round six-under par and set a competitive course record on his way to the first round lead.

Atkinson started the round strong with a three-under 33 on the front nine. He continued with his strong play as he moved to five-under par with birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. Atkinson sank his final birdie on the 15th hole to move to six-under par as he went onto close out the round at six-under par.

Atkinson, who finished his career at North Texas at the NCAA Central Regional, is looking to win the Texas Amateur after placing second last year at the Dallas Athletic Club in the event. Atkinson will also compete in the Texas State Open later this season where last year he was the low amateur in the field.

There was also an article in this mornings DMN, which is a paper going downhill fast.
