  1. Regardless of all of this.... Patrick Cobbs is still a really cool, really good dude. And the kids at Ryan are lucky to have him as a coach and role model.

  2. What is funny is that the “experts” will now say that UCF clearly doesn’t belong because of an 8 point loss to LSU. Strangely, they will leave out that Baylor lost a TON of games for years in Big XII play, Kansas loses the majority of their league games, Vanderbilt doesn’t sniff conference titles, Arizona is no perennial winner, and the P5 is littered with teams that would have lost by 8+ to LSU...yet they are all still afforded a “legitimate” seat at the table.

  3. Again...this is like giving Alabama a pass for not being up for Utah when they had a chance to play for the National Title. Or Auburn vs UCF last year. Or Boise State versus an OU years ago. When people would say that all of the G5 schools would howl in anger and rightly so. We can't then turn around and then say Georgia has that excuse because next time a school "like us" beats a big boy in one of these, they'll use that same damn line on us.

  4. And they played without their starting QB Milton. I think the outcome would have been different with him in the game.

  5. With the NFL playoffs starting this week and the BCS wrapping up whatever it does, I thought I would write out a thought I had over the weekend of what the NFL Playoffs would look like if they followed the model used by the NCAA and the BCS. =========================================== First of all,. the playoffs would only be represented by the NFC EAST, the NFC North, the NFC West, and the AFC West. These are the automatic qualifier conferences. The other conferences just don't get enough TV time to be considered competitive so they are out. The Patriots, Steelers, and Saints might be allowed in but only if they are really, really good (undefeated for like two years in a row). So the first round of the playoffs will look like this. The first semifinal will be the Bears vs the Rams . The second semifinal will be the Cowboys vs. the Chiefs. Sorry, that is how they got ranked. The Super Bowl will the winners of the Bears/Rams game and the Cowboys/Chiefs game. There will also be playoff games featuring the Saints against the Seahawks, the Vikings against the Eagles, and the Chargers against the Redskins. These games don't really mean anything but they are playoff games in our system. Just be happy you got to play in an extra game. The Patriots, Ravens, Texans, Colts, and Steelers had good seasons as well and while their records were better than the Redskins, the Saints claimed the spot from the non-qualifying conferences so there were no other opportunities. Yes, the Redskins only had 7 wins, but they were legitimate wins. Also, next year the NFL will reduce the money allocated to the conferences of the non-automatic qualifier conferences to amount normally given to one team in an automatic qualifier conference. You still have follow the same rules and provide the same benefits, but do it will less money. And if you are really good, we might let you play in a playoff game. And don't complain to the NFL - this is how TV wanted it.

  8. No, you cannot use this excuse. It's the same one schools like Alabama used to make after losing to a Utah in the Sugar Bowl. Texas is just whipping Georgia right now. I don't much like it either, but the Bulldogs have no excuse at all.

  9. Yeah...It's a testament to their overall team. We played our freshman QB 2 1/2 quarters and got mopped by USU. UCF started theirs and dropped 32 points vs LSU. For the LSU fans and "P5" cronies stating that the G5 argument is dead. To that I say UCF competed vs an SEC power and had the ball late in the 4th quarter down 1 possession with a freshman QB playing pretty poorly. To note, LSU rushed 2.9 ypc on something like 50 attempts. They tried to lean on UCF defense and they did in the 4th quarter, but their passing game created the separation. It also helps LSU that UCF went 3 and out eight times due to their QB just not seeing his reads. A healthy Milton on his game carves them up for 50 points while at least cutting out half of those 3 and outs, book that.

  23. This is a tricky game to play. Players rotate in and out on defense constantly. Just because starters didn't play as much doesn't mean the guys playing were freshmen on their 4th career start. Missing your heisman finalist quarterback impacts your team differently. With Milton in they would have kept drives going and scored more putting more pressure on LSU to put up points. UCF's defense would have also had more breathers. Who knows how the game would have gone with all starters in but it's not a stretch to say the two teams aren't separated by much.

  24. Though markets are important, I don't think it's held at such a high regard as it was just 5 years ago. We have a thing in the state of Texas that runs deeper than anywhere I have ever seen...t-shirt fan-itis. It's a state wide epidemic that starts with the Cowboys and UT and trickles down. No one in this state wants to be a diehard fan until it's convenient to be a diehard fan, at least from what I have seen and experienced.

  25. Read the post again. It was nothing about Holgorsen ability compared to Applewhite. And it had zero to do with jealousy. It is the irony of the fact that 8-4 is a fire able offense in H-Town. Then you go and spend 4 million a year on a guy that has just won more than 8 games once in the last 7 years. And I dont want to hear any excuse about its hard to win in the big 12. Good coaches can recruit to their competition.

  26. I really wish the MAC would go away. Yeah I know Northern Illinois is good sometimes and Western Michigan made it to a New Years Bowl a couple years back but no team in that conference is exciting. Just the mere mention of Toledo or Akron put me to sleep.

  29. Agreed. And a lot of those "experts" also think Georgia should have been in the playoff this year. LSU beats UGA by 20, LSU beats UCF by 8. These results clearly indicate that Georgia should have made the playoffs and that UCF "doesn't belong" in the playoff. Yep, makes perfect sense.

  31. So, let me see if I have this straight. A coach with generally middling success, and a few positive spikes in record, decides he wants to leave his job and the employer decides they’d like him gone as well...except there is a lot of money still owed. So a “P6” school with more money than good sense comes along and money whips a guy who really had no competitive market for his services to solve both the coach and the former employer’s headache. Sure, sounds like a home run all around 😆😆😆😆

  35. If UCF and USF had a power team and one self-important wannabe within their metropolitan area/TV market like we do with TCU and SMU they'd look exactly like UNT. While Florida is basically split between UF, FSU and Miami, all that really matters is your TV market in this new landscape. We share ours with two ding dongs that eat up all the bandwidth.

  37. Sustained 10+ wins just to even get a sniff at the table? How many seasons would have to be sustained? 4-5 Years? A freshman could come in, never lose a game in his four years, and still not get a chance to compete in a meaningful bowl in the current system. What are the odds a G5 coach stays after 4 undefeated seasons? Many people have said it here before, but the system is ridiculous.
    1 point
  38. So I'm curious what the real expectation is. For $1 million+ per year more than any other G5, you have to have UCF level success or bust. He can't lose a game? I get next year's transition...but in year 3 he can't do anything less than undefeated right? For $4 mil a year wouldn't anything less be a disappointment? The bar is Tom Herman/Scott Frost? *Edit* Looking at the 2021 schedule which would be year 3, UH OOC schedule is set up perfectly. Home vs Boise and TTech and on the road at Vanderbilt. If UH runs the table that year (assuming Boise doesn't go 6-6 and TTech and Vandy are good) that would be the year that UH could crash the party. But you have to go 12-0 that year.

  39. If all you have to do is pay a HC $4 mil a year to get in the big 12, seems that would be pretty easy....

  40. If West Virginia had only one loss to OU would they have been in the playoff?
    1 point
  41. UH is trading on margin here. $4m/year is ridiculous and unsustainable for a G5 program unless you are sure it will result in performance that will catapult you to the next level. Dana Holgorsen is a decent coach. But in my opinion, he didn't do anything spectacular at WV other than convince kids that living in the worst state in the country was worth a scholarship. So they fired their coach after an 8 win season to hire a more expensive guy who seems to get a lot of 8 win seasons. K. I think all they've done is inflated the G5 salary market, and this worries me. North Texas might have the institutional willpower to pull off upper G5 salaries, but that's only a guess on my part. How much is SL going to want if he sticks around a few more years? With that said, none of the P5's conferences really impressed with the clown show Coog High has put on. Good work guys.

  42. So they give it to Jackson from UTSA for his performance against Southeast Oklahoma State with 32 points and 10 rebounds. UTSA barely won the game. They mention his performance over the last 5 games of which 3 opponents are D2 or less (ex Mid America Christian).. Woolridge had a double/double (24 pts and 12 Rbs) with 6 assists and no turnovers against Rice. It is ridiculous that we have not had a single player win POW this year. I can appreciate that we are a well balanced team but still we have had some players with outstanding individual performances in games. http://www.conferenceusa.com/news/2018/12/31/mens-basketball-mbb-dec-31-players-of-the-week.aspx

  44. I say let them overlook us. We know what this team has done and can do. PotW honors are nice at a player level, but wins are a team effort and this team currently has 5 players averaging double digits and Miller is at 9.8. It be interesting to see if any CUSA teams come anywhere close to NT in that manner.

  45. He didn't want have to come to Denton again. I don't think he will make it. Had one good season at UTSA. Won Freshman DPoY. That's it. Was barely honorable mention in All CUSA this year. If I was an NFL team, I would much rather have EJ Ejiya on my team than this guy.

  48. I don't think he is ready to be a head coach in the next few years. Since he is coaching high school players know I bet he will be a great recruiter for us and his NFL creds will work in our favor. I could see him being our HC down the road. He seems to be a great guy but we will see if he even applies for the job.

  49. I hold Patrick Cobbs in very high regard. I have yet to post this story, so now seems like a good time. This season near the end of the Incarnate Word game, and with a 2 and half hours drive in front of us, my wife and I headed out. While putting our seats in the trunk of the car, I realized the canvas back of my seat had fallen off somewhere along the way. These North Texas stadium chairs are no longer available, so I was intent on finding the backing. After tracing my step and not finding the item, I found myself at the entrance to Apogee. The ladies at the gate were very understanding of my situation, but couldn't let me back in the stadium with my ticket that had already been scanned. Out of nowhere, Patrick and his wife stepped up and handed me one of their club level tickets. What wonderful people that truly love and support our athletics. They are great representatives of our university and Patrick certainly has the credentials to coach our running backs. I would be beyond enthusiastic if Littrell were to hire Cobbs.
