  2. It’s the middle of October, which means we’re at the halfway mark for a few things. For one, the semester is half over and mid-terms are lurking over students like hawks. On a more positive note, North Texas football is at the halfway point of its 2016 campaign. Just as I predicted at the beginning of the season (I didn’t), the Mean Green are sitting pretty at 3-3 with a 2-1 record in Conference USA. So unlike last year when North Texas had the dreaded and inexplicable week one bye, the Mean Green now get a much-needed week off in the heart of their three-month trudge, which gives us time to answer the following question. What the heck is happening in Denton, and are we actually seeing #NewDenton? Yes, yes we are. The numbers are pretty convincing. In 2015, the Mean Green scored 182 points all year. Through six games in 2016, North Texas has scored 155 points. Go back and read those last two sentences. Really soak it in, because that is absolutely incredible. The offense is night and day better. The Mean Green are averaging 25.8 points per game this season, 10.6 points higher than their 15.2 average from last year. True freshman Mason Fine was called upon in week one to lead the offense and has been sublime. Fine has only coughed the ball up twice in six weeks, throwing an interception at Florida and fumbling last week against Marshall. You can’t ask much more from your freshman quarterback, who is probably worried about his English 1310 mid-term this week. And while the offense has improved by leaps and bounds, the real story of this team is the defense. Under first-year defensive coordinator Mike Ekeler, North Texas’ defense is holding opponents to 28.7 points per game. Last year, opponents averaged 41.2 points per contest. When you cut your opponents scoring almost in half, you’re going to win some football games. Even though the wins have come against schools with a combined record of 1-13, each victory counts exactly the same as North Texas pushes for its first bowl game since 2013. Junior defensive back Kishawn McClain has stepped up into a leadership role and has gone above and beyond. He has been crucial to the defense’s success and leads the team in interceptions with three. In fact, the defense has been what has kept them in a majority of games. Against Middle Tennessee State University, the Mean Green thwarted off the Blue Raiders for nearly an entire half before surrendering a slim seven-point lead. Against Marshall University, the defense forced The Thundering Herd to settle for field goals, which were missed on both occasions. The offense then went out and strung together a few scoring drives that put them in the driver’s seat, and the defense sealed the deal with a pick-six. Hallelujah. Light the tower, because that is how you win games. Featured Image: Junior running back Jeffery Wilson (26) celebrates after scoring against MTSU. Colin Mitchell View Full Article

  3. I live near West Point....just retired as a teacher, basketball coach, athletic dir and HS principal for the past 40 years here in the Hudson Valley....worked here at the Point in the summer coaching baseball and basketball....graduated from NTSU in 1973....PE and History .....met my girlfriend my jr year from Paris,Texas in front of Kerr Hall.....married her a few years later.....married 41 years with 3 daughters, one son and two grandchildren...thank god I met here that night in front of the dorm...anyway been reading about what some people are saying about visiting......in about 3 weeks the leaves will just start to turn...the campus is beautiful...getting here is a pain like a few here already said...no direct bus or train....the train from Grand central lets you off in Garrison..you can see the Point...only problem is your on the wrong side of the Hudson...no row boats or ferries...you can actually sit on the banks of the Hudson and hear the crowd at the football game across the river....you can take a cab to the Bear Mt bridge and get to the Point..or you can get off in newburgh at the next stop and take a cab...have no idea what the cost is....if you are interested let me know and I can find out....someone said there is a ferry out of NYC that docks right at the Point...that is probably a good idea...make sure you wear some warm clothes...in 3 weeks if its cloudy its gets cold..so far the weather here has been great...50's,60,70's...at night in the mid 40's.. If your staying over night there are a lot of hotels in the area....someone here said stay away from Newburgh....Newburgh is fine with good food and a river front second to none with restaurants and a great view of the Hudson,....I think who ever said that is talking about downtown Newbugh...that area is pretty bad but New Windsor and Newbugh have a lot to offer and are safe....Washington headquarters,New Windsor Cantonment and a lot more...the Point has a lot of things to see also..the parade in the morning, the chapel, the cemetery with Custer, etc. Michie stadium is one of the prettiest football stadiums in the country....it should be a bucket list place... If you are staying in the city....make sure you go to Times Sq,5th Ave,St Patricks,Rockefeller Center,NBC building..those are all free and within a close walking distance..from Port Authority or Grand Central...eat at Carmines on 44th right near times Sq....that is where all the locals and NYC cops and firemen go....unfortunately word got out and now many tourist and out of towners go....its family style Italian and its cheap and great... Depending on how long your staying there is the 9/11 memorial that in amazing....Empire St building,etc...on Sunday if you are there go to TKTS in Times sq and buy a ticket to a Broadway play for sundays matinee....the tickets are at half price.. anyway hope this info helps some of you out there..ask any questions here and I will try to answer them.....my buddy is the PA announcer at the stadium...I will be there so maybe we can hook up....also if someone needs a ride back to the city I can drive them to the Beacon train station...I have to go home that way....and lets hope NT's defense can stop Army's wishbone....Go Mean Green...

  5. From my S&C Coach connections. If you have a IPF, your schedules/workouts never change due to weather. Inclement weather reduces the effectiveness of the training session if it has to be done outside in the rain, sleet, snow, mud, heat or cold. At BYU, they used their facility almost exclusively during the offseason before Spring Football. I know that's in Utah. But even at UL- Monroe, they had a very wet spring that impacted their ability to train effectively outdoors. It even impacted their Spring practices and the start of two a days. And when I talk about rain, I am not talking the wet part, but the lightning part. Lightning is the big bugaboo now with all sorts of time restrictions that have to be met. At BYU they trained all the outdoor sports in the IPF and even the band uses it to practice on inclement weather days. Midway High School here in Waco has a full 100 yard IPF. It is VERY nice facility. Better than some D1 universities. They have drop down batting cages for baseball and softball and they can even do infield practice inside with diamond outline and bases already on the carpet. And yes.. It is a huge recruiting selling point.

  6. Over the past five years, six schools competing in the ACC have built indoor practice facilities, while another four are scheduled to open by the end of 2015. The University of Florida, lone holdout in the SEC, recently announced that it was seeking design bids for a potential facility. "Some would argue it's about the arms race, but really, they do play a pretty important role in providing an all-weather practice space," says Joel Leider, vice president of SportsPLAN Studio in Kansas City, Mo. "Student-athletes from every sport train every day year-round. Providing a place for them to work during the winter, during storms, during oppressive heat — that's important." For football, the list of reasons to have an indoor facility is even more compelling. "Football teams have 120 guys on them," Leider says. "That's a lot of people to have concentrated on a single practice field. The ability to run inside and out when the weather changes or to do drills is pretty important." "It's the versatility of anything from not having people standing at the fence watching what you're doing to being able to practice certain conditioning activities in a controlled environment," adds Yann Cowart, vice president with Montgomery, Ala.-based Infinity Architecture. http://www.athleticbusiness.com/gym-fieldhouse/designing-the-modern-college-football-practice-facility.html

  8. The purpose of an IPF is not to escape the heat. It's to have an excellent facility that services a number of purposes. I would bet that feasibility on this project will include whether or not to make it football specific or multi-purpose (and the associated costs / scope that go with each scenario). We need one badly, and it is great to finally see it in the plans.

  9. We had our 1st frost last night here in the Hudson Valley.... leaves are looking pretty good....about 1/3 of the trees have turned its color...its possible in two weeks we could be at 100%.....if you never saw the fall around here you are in for a big surprise....it is beyond stunning....Michie is surrounded by trees, hills and a lake...before the game you can see the reflection of the trees off the lake....there isn't a football stadium in the country that is more beautiful in the fall......you want to make sure your inside the stadium when the corp arrive...its awesome to watch them march in..they don't march in but run in..with their battalion flags....if you are outside when the corp come in you have to wait..so get your seat early.....with the band playing,American flag waving as the captain of the team runs on to the field to get goose bumps and have to cheer for Army....but for the 1st time in many years once the kickoff starts its " Go Mean Green"... Also the Army skydivers from 10,000 feet above us all land on the 50 yd line and deliver the game ball....these guys hit the 50 every game...the joke around the Point is Army's record the past few years has been 2-10 last yr,4-8,3-9,2-10 and 3-9....if the Black Night skydivers can hit the 50 yd line 10,000 feet why can't Army complete a freak'in pass in the past 6 years... Will update you guys going to the game....don't forget...dress warm...heavy sweatshirt and a beanie cap for the ears....don't need gloves yet until November...... The parade starts at 9.00am....get there at 8.30 so you can sit in the stands...parade is outstanding...its a 12.00 game so that is good..don't have to wait outside that long...from the parade to kill some time go over to the Thayer Hotel at the entrance...its awesome to walk around.....

  14. my initial reaction is that it is kind of pointless, as we have a nice practice facility dedicated to the team, but I know it's about more than that. It's about taking a step to becoming a big time college program, about showing off to recruits what you have to offer, it's about getting the guys access to a practice facility year round, if they want to workout/run routes/sprints... all this on top of the multifunctionality of it. It's going to cost a ton and it's going to raise quite a bit of uproar from the student body, so be prepared for that.

  17. SMU and NT at Dallas makes no sense at all. Even if they could get the stadium for free, I doubt that they would draw the crowds they have at Apogee or Ford. The only neutral site games NT should consider would be to take on a power team that would not play in Denton. Like A&M, ages ago at Texas Stadium. This would not even make sense until NT builds the program enough to be competitive in the minds of fans. Think Oklahoma playing UH in Houston stadium. In other words, until NT can fill Apogee; they don't have any reason to play home or neutral site games anywhere else.

  18. It's not rocket science people. What incentive has the school and program given alums and people in general to attend games and do it consistently? This program has been a joke and embarrassment for a very very very long time. If you win they will come. The thougth that Apogee would be the savior was foolish because the product inside it has still been a big turd with the exception of one flukey season. So when you're awful combined with the fact that there are A TON of other entertainment options you can put your dollars to we know why people don't show up to our games. Just keep on winning and building the program the right way and the attendance will take care of itself.

  20. I agree with SL and them bringing him on if they think he can be something, I just have a feeling this kid won't amount to anything because he seems to have always tried going to a play that has great players and ride off of them instead of him being the main focus, if that makes sense. But I could see him being someone who comes in and could play 1 year light it up then he goes off to another school as well..But if he is going to be here in Jan. why didn't he sign back in March, it doesn't make sense to come here now after not playing for 1 year when he could have been in the system and competed. But I hope I'm completely wrong about this kid, but if i had to pick I would rather roll with Fine or Pearson any day over Augie... Also, I would rather bring in 1 freshman QB per class and not 2, but I would be completely okay with us sign Pearson and Isadora because of the different classes and experience.

  21. Come on, dude. Even though they lack the proper use of paragraphs, I love your posts, but I have to ask... ...have you seen the push Arlington has put on to keep the Rangers there? It's a civic effort. Laura Miller was the Mayor. Jerry Jones was willing to move to Dallas for the right deal. She didn't understand that because she was a journalist, not a business man...or woman. Whatever. She had no business sense. As distasteful as it seems, if you want business in your city, you have to play nice with developers and business folk. She wouldn't do it. She was constantly in journalist/suspicious mode. And, if you can't see that having the Dallas Cowboys in your city named Dallas might help it just a bit economically...? Come on. The difference between Miller and Rawling is night and day. Arlington sees what happened with the Cowboys. They see Dallas has opened a play area to practice in here in Frisco. They see lots and lots of open land around the edges of Denton, Collin, and Tarrant county. They realize that if Arlington doesn't step up to the plate, the Rangers will go where they can get their best deal. I guarantee you that every mayor and city council in the DFW area with a mile or two or open fields - or, old buildings and houses to "condemn" - is in the ear of Ranger ownership trying to sell its city on them.

  23. i guess what bother me the most about the game was how little the players cared they were getting destroyed. They were looking up at the fans and were not engaged in the game. I would love to know what happened or didnt happen leading up to the game. No way we should have got our asses kicked that bad.

  27. One problem McCarney's staff had was it seems they didn't put the effort into recruiting that was required. If this staff fails it won't be because they didn't put the work in. I feel confident this staff will put in the time and effort to do the job but we'll see if the can "close the deal" on enough quality recruits. The work ethic this staff is putting into recruiting appears to be night and day different from McCarney's staff.

  32. I find it weird that some alums would go to the HoD game and won't ever come to Denton. If that is the case then maybe they're the issue. Denton isn't not more than 30-45 mins away for most of the metroplex so building a pipeline in Dallas doesn't make any sense to me because Denton is part of DFW as a whole.. If people want to come to Denton then they will...if they don't then they simply won't. I just think the school and athletics program haven't ever really given our alums to care enough to come to Denton and be connected. We have to fill up Apogee every game first and we only achieve that by winning and winning big including consistently flirting top 25 ranking. We have Apogee and built it for a reason.

  35. Yeah, and 94 yards over the other 5 games combined. For a 3rd year player that was destined to grow into a major offensive role, that is not fine. And to note, the large majority of those 100 yards vs Middle came when the game was no longer in doubt. I am not harping on the guy, I am just wondering if teams are putting their top cover player on him and with that is it freeing up Thompson to have consistent productivity? Just trying to bring a little clarity to something that is not making much sense.

I'll ask him tomorrow for more information...but let me know where the NT tailgate sets up.....the visiting teams fan sits in zone 2,3 or 4 I think..its in the end zone...my buddy is the PA announcer and is sending me a ticket....you would think he would give me a 50 line yd seat....but because I talk so much "smack" about North Texas he's putting me in zone 2,3 or 4....I'd rather be with my Mean Green people then the 50 yd line....hmm.. maybe not...lol.. we better beat the Black Nights..
