  2. I saw Jerry Seinfeld at WinStar last night (sat). Of course the show was amazing, but I was surprised to see a big ad for UNT over and over on the video screen before the show started. WinStar claims to be a proud supporter of North Texas. I've heard them mentioned on the basketball broadcast and to see NT and Jerry Seinfeld more or less on the same stage made for a perfect evening. It was a Festivus miracle GO MEAN GREEN

  5. So while I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the Superbowl to start, I was reading through the threads about increasing interest through regional opponents in a regional conference. I think another way of doing this are rivalries and the lack thereof at UNT. We have SMU for however long that will last, and UTSA is slowly emerging as a conference rival but I think another option could be Texas State. TS and UTSA are reviving their "I-35" rivalry in 2017 and I was thinking why not hop on board. With the amount of alumni the schools are pumping out I think it could work. The 3 teams could play each other each year and hell, let's go all out and throw in a trophy naming the King (or prince. UT, Baylor, and TCU would attest) of 35. I think that would spark more interest than our FCS games and the drives would make nice weekend trips for the alumni. I've done it once for UTSA and also for the UT game, which I was pleasantly surprised at the mean green turnout, and enjoyed it both times.

  7. The three teams we've played the most in our history are Texas State, New Mexico State, and SMU. I'd welcome an annual game with Texas State and an every other year with NMSU. I'm happy with the SMU series. If you can't admit that it gets your blood pumping more than the prospect of a match up with Old Dominion, you're.... I can't think of the proper derogatory word to insert there.

  8. It is not enough yet. He will have to follow it up with a team that finally shows consistent quality. We are currently 7-14 vs FBS teams this season. we have 8 games left. I'd say he needs 6 of those plus a decent run in the conference tournament. And that is just to start considering keeping him. The bar is pretty high by now, because his previous seasons all had one nice win that turned out to mean very little because for every nice win there would end up being at least one bad loss. And this game doesn't really change the overall outlook on th e season: This season our record vs RPI top 100 is: 0-3 vs RPI 101-200 is: 2-6 vs RPI 201-300 is: 2-5 (!) One game does not fundamentally change that bad record. And that is just this season. Benford needs a major run to have the present momentum overpower the long term picture.

  9. I can tell you why: RV = Teflon Todd & Dan McCarney. That's a decades worth of futility. Now, NT has a bigger budget, a new stadium, new athletic buildings, and a student base that is ready for a consistent winner. It can take off with several seasons of good football....

  10. @ChristopherRyanWilkes@GMG24 Here's a post from earlier in this thread. Basically says we had to count Kenny Buyers, Blake Macek, Kaydon Kirby, and Skip Caldwell towards our 2014 class, because they were put on scholarship after spending just one season with us as walkons. The rule, as I've understood it, is that if a player spends less than two full seasons as a member of an FBS team as a walkon before being placed on scholarship then he has to count as an initial counter (re: part of the 25-max man class). Those four I just mentioned were on the team in 2012 as walkons, but were placed on scholarship prior to the 2013 season, thus requiring us to count them towards the next recruiting class (class of 2014). So knowing this, the next year I anticipated we would have to count the players who spent 2013 as walkons but were placed on scholarship before the 2014 season towards the 2015 class. Those players were Andy Flusche, Erick Evans, Michael Banogu, Eric Keena, and Sheldon Wade. Five former walkons needing to count as initial counters. However, Mccarney ended up signing a full 25-man recruiting class in 2015, which did not include any of those five former walkons. In short, if you're still following, maybe Mccarney was able to push those five former walkons back a class. Littrell signed 19 this class. If you add those five I mentioned then that would put us at 24 spots for the class, which would explain us only having one more open spot. In short, Mccarney may have screwed us past his firing due to his awful roster management.

  12. I always enjoyed playing Southwest Texas State (now Texas State - San Marcos) in our old Southland Conference years. The trip to San Marcos is not that bad. You can be there and back on the same day if you want to do that. Their stadium was okay and I believe it has been upgraded since then. If SMU shuts down our series with them I would have no problem with Texas State as a replacement

  13. By their sheer size and proximity, it makes a lot of sense to play Texas State every year. Their enrollment in 2014 was 36,739. They would bring a sizable crowd to Denton. Can you look at our schedule and honestly say that you wouldn't swap at least one of our OC games for Texas State?

  16. Based on the below that I pulled from our Facts and Records book, we had played SMU 34 times prior to 2015 which is the second most times we've played any team. The team we've played the most? Our fellow former teacher's college to the south, SWTSU-SM is the team we've played most with 37 total contests. We should eclipse that in 2018 if our series continues but we do have a history with the 'cats even though we haven't played in over 20 years. I'd much rather have played them than Portland State, Nicholls, TxSouthern, or Bethune-Cookman. 17. He was a juco transfer and was rated a 5-star from Blinn. JUCOs are rated, including Newton and all of the JUCOs we got. https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/maple/95471 Again, it's just hard to rate a guy like Alec Morris who hasn't thrown a pass since high school. You can slap a player's old high school rating, but that might not be accurate for a guy like Anthony Wallace once he started playing college ball. What else do you use to rate from there? Practice film? That's what it usually comes down to, so it's just not very practical for FBS transfers.

  21. Not a representative shot of the full crowd who eventually made it to their seats...we, had that 4600+. But, quibble as we may over the actual attendance, it was darn good. And, whoever was responsible for the promos that got all those groups and others to attend...as we have been averaging under 200, should be given a pat on the back. The crowd noise had to help the players, and they did seem to enjoy the attendance as witnessed by the bench "goings on" at multiple times throughout the game. FUN it certainly was...and nice to see two home wins in one week!

  23. North Texas fan mentality pre 2012- Remain quiet while people talk about college football. Speak up about hoops (at least we have basketball) North Texas fan mentality in 2013- Talk about college football with your fellow SEC and Big 12 team fan buddies. Don't get to cocky... But your are given the right to speak highly of the Mean Green Defense when it comes down to it. Suck it TCU and Texas North Texas fan post 2014- Just remain quiet about sports, roll your eyes when someone bad mouths UNT... But never speak up or argue about it. Walk into an establishment IN DENTON and hesitate a little to ask them to switch over from a P5 game to a UNT football game. 2016: Please lord, make Littrell the guy who gets it for us. We have been clowned 3 times now since the early 00's... Just let Littrell bring us that 2013-in-your-face feeling again!

  25. Wow! What a great turnout for the event tonight and the "feel" was very positive. One attendee estimated 1000 in attendance. While that may be high, the place was really full. There were appetizer stations set up around the room and two cash bar areas. I think that worked well to give more room in the middle of the room and kept folks from just hanging around a big buffet table in the middle of the room. The TV's were showing recruit highlights, and the coaches were available to meet and greet. Coach Littrell spoke and introduced his staff...at one point his young daughter wondered up on the stage...maybe about 2-3 years old ... Followed shortly by her older brother about 5 years old. I loved that and it was great to have his family with us as well tonight. Dr. Smatresk, Dr. Wolf, Dr. McCoy, Elizabeth With, Rob McInterf and Provost Graves were in attendance as well as Coach Benford and several of his players along with new addition Keith Frazier. I thought it was great to see the support from the basketball team and the university administration. I am sure I left out some folks, so others who attended might fill in the blanks. Coach Littrell did not review the signees other than to comment on the class as a whole. So, like advertised, this was not the type of signing day event we have seen in the past. I did notice from both the press conference and tonight's event that Coach Littrell does not seem 100% comfortable, in my opinion, behind a microphone as yet. I will bet this changes pretty quickly as he does more and more of these type of events. Overall, a fun event. There were lots of fellow GMG.Com posters in attendance as well. Mean Green Club and Athletic Department personnel were there selling season tickets and working Mean Green Club renewals and new memberships. Fun chatting with everyone. Hopefully, others in attendance can fill in additional info on the event.

  26. There's been various comments made that after signing 19 players that we only have one more scholarship available to give. How can it be one instead of 6? There have been some vague comments that Mac is to blame but I, and I'm sure others, would like to know if any of this is true. Do we really only have one scholarship to give? If so, how did it this happen?

  28. Its really hard to argue any of that post. I think we all felt that way when we moved up to Division 1-A in 1995. I know that I thought the SBC run was a the trampoline to move us upward. Instead, the trampoline broke. We hired two other guys to bring their own trampolines, but Dodge's was broken from the start and McCarney had one that might have worked, but he refused to jump on it. It is amazing how bad we have gotten, especially being in Texas as a university that has fielded a team for 100+ years. We will be favored, most likely, in 2016 in one game, as the post showed, against Bethune-Cookman. Maybe we do win 3-4 games, as that suggested, but I think that would be an outrageously optimistic thought. Just don't lose to Bethune-Cookman and win another game somewhere else--that would be a good sign for us, basically equaling what SMU did under Morris in his first season, after June Jones last team went 1-11.

  29. Yes. My thoughts as well. Problem: Which bowl game, and which network, picks up a game between two teams no one knows about nationally? Although, you could probably say that about 75% of the bowl games these days. With UNM hosting the "New Mexico Bowl" I'll never understand why we, with out new and superior stadium, don't have a "Denton Bowl" or "Jazz Bowl" or something. (3, 2, 1...waiting for 90's RV missive to insert here.)

They are our rival from a geographic standpoint, an academic standpoint, demographic standpoint, and just about every standpoint I could personally fathom. Many here don't want to accept that. Fewer in Dallas want to even acknowledge it, but it's real and there is nowhere to hide from it.

  36. You can't manufacture rivalries and frankly I believe it is an old concept that just doesn't work anymore. Not that there are not rivalries that mean something; OU vs UT for example, an decades old neutral site game between the historical dominate teams in two bordering states. The important games are dictated by your conference, location, and recent significant games. Does anyone really think that designating some team as a rivalry game and creating some trophy makes that game more important than a meaningful conference game or a game against a higher ranked opponent?

  37. Chart: Which new FBS head coaches signed the most recruits? Posted by: Chris Vannini on Sunday February 07, 2016 Signing Day is the culmination of years of work and relationships, but for new head coaches, they only get a month or two to get that done — and sometimes even less. In some cases, a class is already close to full, but other times, there's a lot to do. Here’s a look at the 28 new FBS head coaches and how much of their recruiting class committed after the new coach was hired. 38. Exactly, and back when events started at 7 the complaint was they ended too late for kids who need to be in bed. As I said, those who wanted to come badly enough to make adjustments in their schedules to come did. Those who didn't want too come enough are not going to make the effort no matter what the time. UNT90 is correct in that if the football team had been winning for the last 10 years, people wouldn't be AS bothered. What UNT90 conveniently ignores is you can't win any football games in February but you can try to build excitement about a new coaching staff and recruits.

  40. I don't wish for UNT to fail, I just decided to stop having false hope and go by the talent on this team, which says we maybe win 3 games next year. There is a HUGE drop off on talent that Littrell was coaching at those schools and the talent UNT has been able to recruit. His only hope is to change the talent level in recruiting. He didn't with his first class. There really is no "forward thinking" until Rick Villarreal decides to retire. Everyone not associated with UNT knows what a joke this AD and his department are. There will be no appreciable change until RV retires in 2025. UNT is losing athletics up to that point.

I hated losing from t ball. I loved play sports growing up, but I am not sure if I ever enjoyed it, if we won that was great and all but the next game was coming up and we had better get ready for it. If we lost it was agony. The last decade following this team has been torture, with brief respite in the HoD Bowl year. If you can enjoy a day where a 1AA team comes in and kicks our teeth in then I envy you, but I wanted to throw up.

  45. As my old counseling professor, Dr. George Beamer, frequently reminded us "the proof of the pudding is in the eating." Until next season, we can only judge on the looks, ratings. 247 Sports has us 8th out of 14. We are ahead of all of the other CUSA Texas teams. This doesn't include our two transfers which would have elevated our ratings. By the way, our average player rating was higher than Tulane's: 78.83 to78.29.

I had the opportunity to educate him on the origins of our famous moniker "Mean Green". As a follow up I'm sending him a copy of the Randy Galloway article about the origins of "mean green". He said he would use the story to motive his defense.
