  1. If anyone wants to get a glimpse of a team scrimmage most of the guys play at the rec on Monday's and Wednesdays starting at 4 for an hour at least. Yesterday was the first day I really got to sit and watch a good amount of basketball and I like what I saw. I watched 3 games to 11 and I'm going to highlight the performances. Teams were Patton, Coleman, Niko, Jones, and J Will vs Random Friend, T-Mitch, Rodger, Walton, and Holman. Chris Jones CJ displayed some great ball handling and passing. He was assisting a lot but he was taking the ball to the hole a lot and had the moves to get around anyone in his way. There were a few times when the small crowd that was watching would oooo and awe at some of the moves Chris was pulling off. He only took one jump shot and missed (an off balance mid range fade in Rodger's face). Jordan Williams J Will was shooting lights out. He made 6 of 8 or 9 three pointers and almost all were with a hand in his face. Jordan also had a really nice put back slam after someone missed a mid range jumper. Rodger Franklin Rodger is a work horse. I've seen him in the rec almost everyday shooting by him self or working on dribbling just trying to get better. In these scrimmages he's the leader. He's the one getting the other guys to stop talking and play some ball. He's also vocal on the court calling out screens helping on defense and always battling for the rebound. I loved the leadership Rog was showing on the court. T-Mitch vs Keith Coleman This match-up was a real treat. For anyone who hasn't seen Keith Coleman in person the dude is an absolute MONSTER. He has a build that reminds me of Dwight Howard. Tony brought up the ball most of the time for his team and was great about distributing the ball to everyone. T-Mitch displayed a little bit of everything from pulling up outside the 3pt line, to scrapping down low for offensive boards, and even drove the lane and threw down one of the hardest dunks I've ever seen in person. Playing defense on Keith proved to be a little tough for Tony though. Keith backed T-Mitch down multiple times but never got a great shot over Tony's long arms. Keith would also block Tony out for offensive rebounds and got a few easy put backs. Rog would yell "TONY KEEP THAT DUDE OUTTA THERE!" If not for Keith's size Tony would have had no trouble guarding him, he was just a little over powered. Both Tony and Keith pinned lay ups off the back board as well (Keith's probably would have been called a goal tend). Tony wasn't the only one with a thunderous dunk either Keith threw down a vicious 2 hand slam after losing Tony in traffic. Everyone Else Justin Patton - didn't impress me. He shot's didn't fall and he didn't seem to be as aggressive as the other guys I mentioned. Brandon Walton - still has a good 3 ball but didn't see him do much else. Niko - cleaned up some of the trash around the bucket and got to the hole a few times. Jacob - tried to throw down some huge dunks over Keith but were both blocked. He was pretty low key but when he shot he made them. Clarke - saw him up there Monday and has a great 3 point shot and made 6-7 in a row consistently (No defender) PJ - didn't show up on time and was sitting on the side when I left but he's been up there previously and has great quickness and the ability to get to the bucket like Chris. Alzee - I haven't seen Al at the rec at all. I don't know if his class schedule conflicts but I go to the rec various times and I never see Alzee there or with the guys. Seems to me Rog noticed this and has assumed the leadership role. Really wish I knew what was going on there. TJ - haven't seen TJ at the rec either but he might still be dealing with his eligibility issues. The thing that impressed me the most while watching this is, it wasn't just some pick up game, these guys were intense. There was trash talking between Keith and Tony and between teams. These guys were really pushing each other to get better and not just letting it be an NBA all-star game out there. I'm really excited for this season and can't wait to see how far we go. GO MEAN GREEN!

  2. I've been a big time supporter of Mean Green Athletics since 2005. I graduated in 2010, and I moved to Corpus in 2011. I missed season 1 in Apogee, but I just booked a Southwest flight for the Troy game this weekend!!!!!!!!!! I am completely stoked. I was supposed to attend the Houston game last season with my father but we couldn't make it up. But I'm there this weekend! I am traveling alone. I wanted to see if any Alumni might invite me to their tail gate area to hang out and down some beers/BBQ for the pre-game? I also need to purchase a ticket. I know I've seen the "fill the wing" thread here. Is the wing a good spot to sit? or should I get a regular seat? Heck, I might just go stand with students so I can get rowdy. See y'all in Denton!

  3. Hey guys, no smack here, just some thoughts I'd like to share. I created my account ages ago but I post as TroyFootball05 everywhere else. I have my doubts whether or not Troy can win this game. You guys play well at Apogee. Some things about Troy: we don't play offense the same way we've played over the last 4 years. Ever since 2009 we've passed 85% of the time. We actually have a very productive run game this year lead by #20 Shawn Southward. We had 262 rushing yards and 191 passing yards vs UAB and 223 rushing yards last week against Mississippi State. Louisiana was able to keep our run game in check as we had only 60 yards, but 528 passing yards against the Cajuns. We should have three running backs rotating Saturday with #31 D.J. Taylor, our jumbo back, finally being able to play this season. He's been sorely needed on short yardage plays. Our other back is our speed back, #15 Justin Albert, who played running back in high school, and played wide receiver last year. Shawn Southward is a mixture of a jumbo back and a speed back; he's very well conditioned and can handle an absurd amount of carries. I have a feeling Troy will score a lot. We've had totals of 453, 588, and 573 yards in our games so far. But we've also had 7 turnovers in the last two games where both our opponents have had none each. If Troy keeps the ball, they will score. Whether or not we can stop North Texas is another deal all together. The Troy Defense is better than last year, but how much we're not certain of. They actually tackle this year, instead of the old "bump n' run" technique. Big plays have come from defensive backs being out of alignment, mostly the safeties. The corners are much improved from last year with three all-americans from different ranking systems. Ask if you want to know what they are. Watch out for #16 Chandler Worthy. He reminds me of Jerrel Jernigan and is coming along fine. He played as a true freshman last year and has looked a lot better so far. #8 Chip Reeves is our best deep threat. He played in 08, 09, and 10, and was ineligible due to grades in 2011. He's caught a lot of deep balls over his career and had 125 yards vs UAB. He's had a case of the drops over the last two games, so who knows if he'll be on or not. If he is, we'll score one or two easy touchdowns where he gets behind the defensive backs. Again, this game could go either way. For Troy it all depends on turnovers and how the defense handles the mean green offense. We'll move the ball, we just need to keep it. I'd like to hear some of the evaluations of your team. Oh, and yall have some weird emoticons.

  4. I can't wait for the day when we no longer create a thread every time we're mentioned on a local sports radio show...

  5. Anyone see the Buffalo, Kent State game last night? I, unfortunately, did. There were probably 4,000 fans there, the field with the track around it along with the faded concrete looking astro-turf reminded me of fouts. It was awful. Worse than awful. Folks we cannot allow that kind of turnout for our Tuesday night game. It was pathetic and honestly looked worse in terms of apathy than most high school games across Texas. Do what you have to do, clear your schedule, MAKE THAT TUESDAY NIGHT ESPN2 GAME.

  6. I see no reason why this couldn't end up on KNTU after a season or so. I always stay for the GB to play Never Walk Alone. After that and a walk back to my car, the post game show is usually wrapping up their interview or show. It would be amazing to have some sort of call in show with lots of people talking Mean Green Football on the radio! Couldn't be happier for this news. I shall be listening to it religiously.

  9. Writer of said article here... I will admit that the media guide for this season was my jumping off point, having minimal experience with the conference prior to this season outside of whatever national blips and blurbs existed about Mitchell. That said, with a full on reading, cover to cover, of that media guide, I created a list of players that I think is fair and accurate outside of your contention of Mitchell as a clear-cut #1. You are absolutely correct that, at this point in time, Mitchell has a much higher ceiling than Rubit. But I'm not writing a top ten list based on how good these players could be, I'm writing it based on how they have produced thusfar. Mitchell is superior to Rubit in terms of potential NBA talent, but Rubit - partly due to two years of production (he was Frosh of the Year right before Mitchell, remember) is only a shade behind Mitchell in terms of ability right now. I'm assuming it's the distribution and not the sequence you are at odds with, and I will admit I initially had it as a clear 1-2, but later changed my mind. Feel free to hop on over there and comment, and also keep an eye out later this week for an interview with USA coach Ron Arrow about the upcoming season.

  10. I don't consider this "smack" talk at all. These guys need to believe they can win the game. They need to justify their strengths. Otherwise they walk in the stadium and they have already lost.

  13. UNT has offered Darius Lemora, safety from Port Arthur Memorial, making him the 5th player from Memorial in the class of 2013 to be offered. DT Matthew Romar is the best of the five and has an impressive offer sheet so I'm not sure if he's in the cards at this point. Also, I believe we have offered Gary Moore from Clarksville, although I'm not sure how recent the offer is. He doesn't show an offer on any of the 4 websites but I read the other day we offered him as a TE. He is from the same school Jarrian Roberts came from and is 6'6 and a 5.7 grade on Rivals, #73 WR #61 overall Texas prospect. I vaguely remember reading something about how academics were a question for the kid and that's why the AQ schools backed off a few months ago. Gary Moore, Clarksville, WR, showing offers from Ark. 14. LSU mostly ran the ball and really didn't seem to try to open their play book. TSU. Enough said on TSU. Kstates qb was mostly terrible as an accurate qb. Do we really know how good our secondary is yet? I'm very afraid that they could be - hmm not so good after the troy game.

  15. I have been told they are looking into not only canceling classes but also closing down the dining halls and any student that attends the game can use their dinning card for a free dog or nacho and drink at the game.

  17. Great post! Keep em coming! I have always been a big fan of Rog and his leadership qualities. Although he may not be Tony Mitchell on the court, I feel that this team would not be as tight knit without him.

  18. Or...You could buy season tickets. And maybe make a contribution to the Mean Green Club. That way, your parking delima would be solved, you would know exactly where you were going to sit at each game, you would be counted when CUSA wants to know how many season tickets North Texas sold last year, and more money would be available to support student athletes at the University of North Texas. 20. Why are so many folks jacking with their phones instead of paying attention and getting ready for the action?
    2 points
  21. I think the problem that you are going to run into on this website is that everyone on here pretty much has tickets, and when people can't make a game and need to get rid of their tickets on here they give them away or sell them for a very low price.

  22. Depends on who you ask. I don't think he's as bad as the fans make him out to be. But he hasn't been good over the last four years either. I liked him better in 05-08 when we had really good defenses. If we win Saturday it will be because of 600+ yards of offense, which isn't out of the question based on how we've played the first three games. If you really do mean "who" is rowell, he's our DC. We were 24-0 in home openers. Louisiana was 0-21 in road openers. They beat us. Records can be broken.

  23. You're 0-2 as far as game attendance is concerned, so would you be interested in throwing the remaining season tickets in with the deal?

  26. BE THERE! FILL UP APOGEE...let's show the nation what the Mean green Nation and its fan base is all about...come on, you know you can be there...get a baby-sitter lined up now if you need to do so, get someone to watch the dog if you must, but get to Apogee for this game. It will be great fun and you don't want to miss being part of this Tuesday night adventure! BE THERE...be there early and tailgate!

  27. Finally! A REAL post game show. I never understood why we didn't have one. What we have now is subpar. Spewing out stats and scores and a couple interviews for 30 mins or so wasn't doing it for me.

  28. My first game was the TSU game. My advice is to get there about four hours before game time. That will give you plenty of time to take in the atmosphere of the tailgating scene ... hang out with Harry and the gang ... do a complete trip around the outside of the stadium taking it all in ... and then enter when the gates first open so you can take your time taking in the scene and still be in your seat for the pre-game show.

  30. Troy is improved, but I really don't think we're in the mood to lose another game anytime soon, so I think you'll see the same ball control you saw at KState. I also think our defense is pumped to go, so I don't see us losing this game unless special teams or our turnover game completely blows. Looking forward to it.

  32. This I like. If any of you went to the Army game at West Point you may have noticed a dude way at the top corner of the stands dressed in a banana suit and waving a flag of some sort. They do this at every home game. Some Freshman in a platoon is "picked" by his group to go act like a wild man waving the platoons flag etc. They give him a costume etc. It is hazing the way hazing was suppose to be. Id really hoped and thought the wing might bring something similar to Apogee. It looks like you are starting the trend. Albeit not hazing but nevertheless. The wing could and should become our very own "ESPN GAMEDAY CROWD" minus any Washington State flags of course. All organizations on campus as well as random buffoons should show up. I applaud you kind sir.

  33. ...we're already looking great on making turnovers happen, and our offense is super ball-controlling'. I doubt we'll allow as many opportunities for the offense that you all are accustomed to from those factors alone. But everyone's right, its Special Teams on this one.

  38. And if the facemask is called and the TD pass isn't overturned... Ain't no if or buts in football. It is what it is. We CANNOT allow Robinson to stand in the pocket like we did Klien. We have to get pressure from the 4 down linemen. I think we will. I think we have at least 2 picks. BUT. No, we don't really know what we have as a team yet, other than we can damn sure run the football. Saturday will be very telling.

  39. 35-10 MEAN GREEN! this game is going one way i'm afraid, and that's to the wood shed with Troy. I like your respectful post, but our team looked good against KState and LSU. Troy is neither of those 2. We shall see.

  40. Might be a little too late. Big E looks like it is going to be in the same boat as the rest of us when it comes to the new playoff bowl system http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/dennis-dodd/20252772/orange-bowl-finalizes-matchup-in-the-playoff-era-beginning-after-the-2014-season "With the Orange move, the Big East is not currently assured an automatic spot in the playoff bowls. It will be up to those access bowls to select a team or teams from the Big East, MAC, Conference USA, Sun Belt and Conference USA in years when those bowls are not national semifinals."
