EDITOR’S NOTE:This is the first in a three-part series on North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal’s plan to guide the school’s football program to success that involves hiring a coach with prior experience in the same position on the Football Bowl Subdivision level and putting the team in a top-notch venue. UNT will open a new $79 million stadium this fall. Today’s story is an overview of Villarreal’s vision.

Rick Villarreal stood in front of a crowded hotel ballroom this summer, the pride in his booming voice readily apparent.

North Texas’ athletic director was speaking about the upcoming football season at an event for fans and made no secret of the reasons why he is optimistic about the future of the program.

One reason was the arrival of the man standing to his right. The other was the stadium being constructed a few miles up the road.

For the first time in its history, UNT will play in a top-notch football facility, and Villarreal was about to introduce Dan McCarney, the first head coach to come to the school with prior experience as a head coach at the Football Bowl Subdivision level in 30 years.

Villarreal believes the program is about to take off because of that set of circumstances, one that meets the formula for success he envisioned when he arrived at the school in 2001.

It’s a simple one: Put a team in a great venue and hire a proven head coach.

Good to see this write-up and the sidebar piece in today's DRC...just on the same day that some idiot named "Smith" has a letter to the editor published calling for RV's firing! Denia resident perhaps? Either way, the guy has no clue.

GO MEAN GREEN!

Wait, a guy came up with a fake name for correspondence related only to criticizing RV? Now I've seen everything.
